They say that moving house is one of the most stressful things you'll do in your life. I'm about to pack and move for the 21st time in my life.

Packing up an entire house is stressful, but everything gets packed. I'm packing bits and bobs from different rooms and some of it is staying here. I can't just shove things in boxes and sort it out at the new place.. I have to sort it before I move!

Has anyone else had to do this? Any tips for making it easier?

P.S. The house is a mess, and I've been gone for 5 weeks so loads of stuff has been misplaced!

I've always been a 'just shove it all in boxes/bags' and deal with it when I get there kinda guy.

For me, it makes it fun rather than the stress of 'which box' or 'oh fuck, I don't know how to categorise this or that'

Deep breath and start in one room and be methodical. Move on to the next. You know the drill if you've moved 20 times before

Always clearly mark the box with your sex toys in and leave it near the top.

I won't be categorising it's just a case of digging through the stuff in each room to find out what's mine! Argh

Oh the sex toys will definitely be labeled so I know exactly where they when I get to the new place! I'll need them right away! Haha

I just bundled it all into my car when i moved out of my mums, i'm fairly minimalist so it was easy enough. Only stressful thing about moving was everyone else telling me what to do as i'm the youngest.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Sort out what you want to take and what you want to dump. The stuff you are dumping you can leave exactly where it is for your mother and sister to sort out.

With the rest, put things into marked up boxes and then they go straight into the room they belong in. This will reduce the stress at the other end.

The last time I moved was 22 years ago and you have been moving nearly every one of those years.

kent ( by the seaside )

Be as organised as you can, get lots of boxes with strong packing tape and a marker pen, mark the boxes, makes it a whole lot easier to unpack and put away the other end.

I love your thinking! Here I am thinking about where to put the stuff I don't want, and you're right, they can deal with it

Most of my stuff is bedroom stuff anyway as I never really had my own space to put things but yeah I don't wanna put the plates (that I'm stealing from my mum, teehee) in with the DVDs!

I'm hoping I don't have to move again for a while!

You can do it. Just set a goal of clearing one room the a cuppa or lunch... It does not take that long to pack. I did my 3 bed flat in one day. I promise that is not one word of a lie. The only pre packing I did was the loft. I had loads of help carrying everything to the van, but I packed everything on the go.

Wow that's quick! I was meant to start packing this morning but I was too tired from my journey yesterday. I've got until Monday to pack it all up so I should be fine. But I also have a lot of washing to do in that time so that's probably gonna be the hardest bit. No washing line xD

I think you will find that somewhere in Woking you can get more boxes and packing tape.

Remember, only wash what you are taking.

In the winter I use a clothes rail to dry the washing and in this weather in front of a window clothes will be dry really quick

I spent my last £20 getting home although I'm sure I have enough boxes and I'm sure the neighbour has some packing tape left over from their move

2 moves for me but ive moved more than this

1 move had to pack everything and sort out at new house couldnt forget anything due to other reasons

though sorted it all in new house

2nd move had to pick and choose through what I had to a certain level of boxes as downsizing

my advice decide on how many boxes that you are moving and bags in one fast move after that everything else dumped in one room thats not being taken, the other room is what you are taking with you

the other thing you will have to contend with is what transport are you using to move it as you can only fit a certain amount into that vehicle or what your transporting everything upon

I moved twice last year, the first time I had to downsize from a two bedroom house to a one bedroom flat. So there was a lot of sorting and getting rid of stuff and also deciding what could go into storage for when I found a bigger place.

I'd recommend having several boxes on the go at a time and also be ruthless about what you keep.

I move next week. My 3 bed house is slowly being packed away bit by bit and my 3 sons keep pulling stuff back out!

Sometimes I think just throwing it all in a van and doing it quickly might have been easier!!

Living room packed.. It consists of clothes from the ironing pile, and some newspapers oh and some pillow cases that nobody will miss!

Washing on

1 box from bedroom done, and that's most of it

Would you recommend packing boxes until they're full? Or leaving space so they're not as heavy? I don't want the bottoms to fall out (I can lift them) but I also don't want to take up too much space in the van..

Clothes in a box? Or bag?

Oh and when doing a box, do you fold the flaps so that they go over/under? Or with the small flaps down first and then the big flaps over the top?

3 houses before I was 5, then parents got divorced, then both parents bounced around to different houses, so although I didn't live full time in all of the houses, I did a lot of moving! At one point I refused to unpack the boxes

Oops! Don't organise too much because you'll be doing it over and over again if they keep taking things out
