It must be massive.

Is that why threads get closed at 175 posts?

I think the most the OP can do is curate the thread they have started. How it goes once it has started is open to all sorts of variables but the OP can make an attempt to steer things back to the topic if they feel it has drifted.

Surely no one owns a thread ... Just as a discussion happens ... It lives in the moment... Everyone has a point of _iew ... The difference is that threads leave trails which anyone can read so the group can see opinions and glean whatever conclusions they choose

Think that depends on their opening post, and how the rest of the forum users read it, and yes I guess the op can try and steer it back on topic of they do it in the right way.

That's what I mean about curating. Once you post a topic all you can do is agree, disagree, clarify or discuss. Everyone will read your post through their lens and their lens on that day will be coloured by what has happened, their mood, the time of day...

I rarely start threads. My brain tends towards tangents and ephemera and I probably annoy enough people by merely posting on existing threads already to clog up the forums with my weird thoughts. Threads belong to all who post, even those I strongly disagree with.

I do believe no-one owns it, although I do think a lot depends on who opens it and how they react to the replies.

Also, if they are a 'marmite' poster drives the outcome.

'marmite poster': someone who will be clearly liked or disliked on the basis of their forum activity, the fact that they don't sit on the fence will drive people liking their honesty or disliking them because they prefer everyone agreeing and/or depending on genitalia or how hot they are.

DENNIS: You're fooling yourself. We're living in a dictatorship.

A self-perpetuating autocracy in which the working classes--

WOMAN: Oh there you go, bringing class into it again.
