Brought my daughter a packet of sweets from a well known supermarket yesterday...happened to look at the date...and theyre 7 months past best before....whats the betting they only offer me my money back...pfft!!! |

If they look OK and no signs of being 'off', I'd eat them. I'm not a slave to the made up dates supermarkets put on food go make people waste it. |

I went to kinver with my little grandson a few weeks ago ... we didnt take a made up bottle ... thought wed just get some already made up for convenience .. we found the brand he usually has ... brilliant we thought ... but as we were waiting in the queue to be served ... happened to glance at the expiry date ....
May 2015 .... checked the shelf ... all were out of date ...

Totally agree, but 7 months is definetly a fair bit of time, still a bit of common sense goes a long way.
On food/drink production lines if a product is made at 23.59pm on the 30th June and the next one comes along at 00.00 on the 1st July. The one on the 1st July gets an extra month on its best before date even though they will be from the same batch |

This is my point. Jelly beans don't really go 'off' as they're essentially pure sugar. The dates are just put there to fool people into throwing them away and buying more.
Also as it was just the best before date then really the only thing the shop could have done differently is offer them at a reduced rate. They've allowed to sell things past their best before date buy not past their use by date. |

We suggest you learn the difference between, "best before" ; "sell by" ; “use by” : “display until” etc.
There is no reason why they should even take them back let alone give you anything such as your money back or compensation.

In many cases beef and lamb doesn't reach its best until a couple of weeks beyond its sell by date - more so especially if it's vacuum packed - just think of it as being well hung... so to speak.  |

Best before and use by is more or less the same thing...ive seen food reduced on the day its meant to be eaten by..I havent seen a supermarket selling out of date food..are they allowed to?!.I dont expect to buy a packet of sweets 7 months out of date...especially when theyre for a child..so yes I expect some form of compensation for their error. Smart arse. |

a BEST BEFORE date is just that, they are best before that date but not inedible after that date.
a SELL BY or USE BY date is the date by which shops should sell stuff and items should be removed from stock during routine stock rotation checks etc |

Best before dates
This may take the form of the words 'best before' followed by the date, e.g. 'best before' 1 January 2010. The date marks on longer-life food may use the phrase 'best before end' followed by a date, e.g. 'best before' end March 2010. This is the date up to and including which the food can be expected to remain at peak quality if properly stored. Food may be edible after this date; however its quality may suffer, e.g. potato crisps might become soft.
It is not an offence under the Food Labelling Regulations to sell food passed it's 'best before' date; however an offence may have been committed under Section 14 of the Food Safety Act 1990 as the food may not be of the 'quality demanded by the purchaser'. The retailer is responsible for ensuring that food sold has not deteriorated beyond the point acceptable to the consumer. It is a criminal offence to sell food not of the 'quality demanded'.
Use by dates
This consists of the words 'use by' followed by the date, e.g. 'use by' 5 April 2003. The 'use by' date is used for foods which are highly perishable and can, after a short period, cause an immediate health risk; examples are meat pies and some ready-prepared meals. These foods could become a health risk if used after the 'use by' date. It clearly instructs consumers as to the date a product should be used by. Some foods, such as bread, are highly perishable but do not carry the immediate risk and are therefore labelled with a 'best before date'.
It is a criminal offence to sell, or have on your premises exposed for sale, under the Food Labelling Regulations, any product that has gone beyond its 'use by' date. Any product passed its 'use by' date must be removed from sale |

Best before and use by are not the same, best before means the product it is at its best before that date however it's not illegal to sell the product, a use by date has to be sold before that date before being removed from display |

Think it's best you swot up on the law regarding dates as you may look a little silly if you think you are going to get some compensation, as a snr manager in retail I'd probably give you a refund and another packet of sweets as a good will gesture |

If you haven't got anything positive to say and all that 
I used to work in a busy cash & carry and it's inevitable that certain items will slip through the net as far as stock rotation is concerned. I think your money back is all you can expect, although I bought a bottle of beer from my local 24/7 that was a couple of months past its best before, and the owner gave me 2 bottles of brand new stock  |

Yeah, probably was a bit harsh! Apologies to anyone that was offended. I didn't get the tongue in cheek tho - and ultimately we all pay for the claim culture that seems to be prevalent these days. It's sweets, they were out of date, perhaps some minimum wage shelf stacker didn't do their job properly and that's a shame, but surely there needs to be perspective. |

well supermarkets are greedy they could have left on shelf hoping 99% don't read the packets, I know a butcher who worked at a major chain and was told to repack meat on the sell by date and add 3 days |
