Going Off Grid

A Galaxy Far, Far Away & Spain

I've been watching lots of TV shows such as Kevin McCloud's Escape To The Wild and Ben Fogle's Life In The Wild where Brits give up the rat race and carve out a new life for themselves. They're off grid, sometimes miles away from other people, & having to face the challenge of providing almost everything for themselves. That includes their daily water supply, a suitable dwelling, power from wind turbines or solar panels, their own food & yes even entertainment.

The ones that appeal to me most are on a tropical island which sounds idyllic but come with their own challenges. However some live next to active volcanoes, some in frozen climates, others in areas prone to hurricanes & even tsunamis.

If living off grid appeals to you, which environment would be your preference & where would you go?

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I love the fact that they are so off grid that a television production team is able to sort out everything involved in making a programme with them.

I can't even do camping so off grid is not for me. Perhaps a silent retreat in a luxury manor house?

Trust you Lickety. I guess your off grid place will be a Highland Estate with a castle & a giant four poster bed. Lol

That sounds perfect. Can it be that place with the wolves?

To my knowledge they haven't reintroduced wolves back into Scotland yet (though there are plans to do a feasabity study to do so).

Meanwhile I'll stick with my tropical island (possibly surrounded by sharks to deter unwanted guests. Lol).

Point Nemo, Cumbria

I go off-grid quite a lot. My favourite setting is woodland.

I use my own home-made photovoltaic system to generate my own electricity. Two small panels and a couple of deep-cycle leisure batteries are plenty to power my lights, computer, phone, and music.

Living in Cumbria, collecting rainwater is easy so I never run dry for washing, drinking and cooking.

There's usually plenty of wood around for making a small fire, though my one concession to relying on outside sourced energy is a propane bottle.

Wild food can be a bit hit or miss, depending on location and season. I don't do much hunting or trapping any more, but I used to be pretty handy at catching pheasants, rabbits and the like - dare say I wouldn't have any difficulty resuming it if I needed to.

Shelters are a piece of cake, though I tend to set things up so as to be as comfortable as I can be which tends to involve things like yurts these days. Even without them, I can usually make whatever I need with whatever I find.
