Need a cab in a couple of weeks. Been shopping around and just found a company called Addison lee who have been recommended to me by a friend..
Are they ok? My fare has been calculated as £9.25 each way and when I downloaded the app I got a code for £10 off my first booking x |

"Sounds Ok for London - a lot of taxis try to rip non natives off, £35-50 being a normal fare for a short distance in the city!! "
I normally get the tube then walk the rest but I'll have my 4 year old with me and he's only got little legs so thought a cab would be easier! |

Being pedantic, whilst most of us refer to private hire and taxis as taxis, the difference is that private hire cars should be booked in advance, whereas a taxi can be hailed on the street without booking!!
A fare of less than £10 in London is still good value whether it's a taxi or PH!! |

Am I missing something here? Where I live all taxis are private hire and pre bookable and yet in London that seems to be avoided like the plague.. Anyone care to explain why? I'm genuinely curious... |

There are lots of private hire firms in London. Some are better than others.
Black cabs, taxis, come with a certain level of reassurance because of their regulation.
I think it's just that.

If someone stopped on the road and offered you a lift.....would you take it ????
Uber is basically that.....
Little or no regulation....
We get to a certain standard of safety and we want to go back to taking a chance to save a few bob......
Crazy !!!!! |

I've used Addison Lee a few years back and no complaints at all
Reasonably priced (for London)
So go for it
Heard a lot of negative about uber - although can't comment on if its warranted |

"Wow.....why would you question a £10 taxi ride "
I was wondering that. From my home to King's College Hospital: five miles, cab £12. From my home to work: eight miles, £18. £22 if going from work home and I'm south of the river using local taxi firms.
Think I'll use Addison Lee in future! |

"And the driver was CRB checked ????
All private hire drivers in London are CRB checked"
Not if they are asylum seekers or from a select few countries that refuse to cooperate

Not a clue either....all the places we have lived have Taxis that you have to call up rather than flag on the street. They are all regulated by the local Authority, spot checked by council officials when on the road, all drivers have to have CRB and the MOT on their cars is normally more stringent as it covers any tiny blemish. In one city they can even get taken off the road if they are spot checked and found their taxi untidy ( I am guessing they may do that in other cities too )In the same city they have to take a test like the knowledge that black cabs do in London.

The trouble I found with black taxis is they are up their own arse and charge you for being stuck in traffic. Uber apps alike you have a price written in front of you that doesn't exceed. Black taxis are not as safe as they make out two rape convictions in the past three years disprove this theory. I had to use a black cab during the tube strike earlier this year and (a) he needed a sat nav to get to Fenchurch. station (b) I had listen to this twat wittering on about how hard it is for him nowadays uber etc. When the journey cost me £53.00. I am quite upfront about these twats no congestion charge, tax dodging self righteous cocks. |

I'm taxi driver in Southampton , I tell people to make sure driver has a badge from local council on him and make sure the picture is the same as driver ! Any reputable taxi driver will be more than happy to show you his badge , It's a good price I'd take it but make sure he's got a badge , they're a good company |

" you really don't have a clue about Uber, the guesstimate price given at the beginning of the journey is almost always at least 20% lower than the actual price they also charge extra for heavy traffic and busy periods. The billing system is so frequently hacked that even the bank financing Uber has banned its staff from using them. Addison Lee is a large private hire company with a high profile in London but their prices are at the higher end for a car journey by mini cab. Their pricing structure is based on the black taxi metered fares. I believe their minimum fare is £9 with a premium for extra passengers and credit cards.
A black taxi in London is only £2:40 to get in and seats five or six passengers for no extra cost. As someone who regularly travels around central London I normally use the tube but if that isn't practical I always use a black cab and as they are allowed in the bus lanes they are always quicker than minicabs

Granted I have not used Uber yet. The company I use I cannot recall the name of right now. But I was quoted the price and which I accepted with no further issues. In my experience I have found black taxis charges higher than what I am expecting for what the journey was. Where I work any journey over 5 miles they order a private car because of high charges of a black taxi. |
