"So my son did his last GCSE today and has officially left school, but I'm an emotional wreck. Can't stop sobbing.
Any other parents experienced this, or am I just a freak? "
You're not a freak. I wasn't upset when they left but I did feel a pang when they started school. |

My son did his last GCSE last Friday.
I'm now panicking about what he's going to do next.
To say the last year regarding him & school was stressful is putting it mildly. I love him more than words can say but god, I could have kicked him up the arse some days. |

"Why are you upset PP?"
I think I want to go back in time and go from him being born through to a teenager again. It's all gone too quickly and I feel like I can't remember him being a child.
The fact that he is less dependent on me too. |

I enjoy and celebrate every stage of our kids lives and I especially celebrated the end of their teenage years lol. Don't be upset, enjoy his growing up and don't look back, look forward. |

Hopefully he can get a part time summer job before starting college. Just feels weird, like I've lost him somehow. |

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum |
This song killed me when I realised my daughter would be leaving home:
Slipping Through My Fingers
Schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning
Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile
I watch her go with a surge of that well known sadness
And I have to sit down for a while
The feeling that I'm losing her forever
And without really entering her world
I'm glad whenever I can share her laughter
That funny little girl
Slipping through my fingers all the time
I try to capture every minute
The feeling in it
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Do I really see what's in her mind
Each time I think I'm close to knowing
She keeps on growing
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Sleep in our eyes, her and me at the breakfast table
Barely awake I let precious time go by
Then when she's gone, there's that odd melancholy feeling
And a sense of guilt I can't deny
What happened to the wonderful adventures
The places I had planned for us to go
Well, some of that we did, but most we didn't
And why, I just don't know
Slipping through my fingers all the time
I try to capture every minute
The feeling in it
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Do I really see what's in her mind
Each time I think I'm close to knowing
She keeps on growing
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Sometimes I wish that I could freeze the picture
And save it from the funny tricks of time
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning
Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile |

"Get a Grip.. How are you going to feel when he passes his driving test !!
I don't want to get a grip.
I'd actually feel relief, as he wants his motorcycle license first."
Must Admit now I would be Worried.. |

if I had other children, I don't think I'd feel half as emotional, because I'd have enjoyed bringing up more than one child, but I'm lucky in the sense I've experienced it and got more to look forward to. |

I remember feeling the same. However my son has just completed his first year at uni and omg. Overwhelming! Feel immensely proud of him, yet I break my heart each time he goes back after coming home.
Got him home soon for the summer, September is going to be mega tough. |

Mine finishes his GCSEs on Thursday. He plans to stay on for 6th Form grades allowing but who knows. I got very filled up when we went out to by his suit and accessories for his Prom. Pride was an understatement and also a sadness that his childhood is over. It's perfectly normal to feel emotional about it. |

sorry I missed your post.
I've just been brought up seeing my dad have some awful accidents and it frightens me, but I guess anything could happen in a car too. |

I struggled to hold back the tears at my son's leaving assembly. They showed a video of their residential trip at the end of Year 6 with Elbow's 'One Day Like This' as the soundtrack. I nearly blubbed Just managed to maintain my composure enough not to embarrass him |

My eldest is 14 at the very end of August so just about to go into year 10. He agonised over his gcse options & I cried when he finally made his final choices as he put so much thought into them & they could define his future. He wants to join the army in 2 years but I want him to stay home even though he's a ratbag!!
I hope he has a fantastic prom!! x |

No this is totally the wrong way to react. This is the start of the journey for them. You should be excited for them not sad.
I'm a single dad of girls and even when they've left for uni I've been happy and excited for them. |

My sister gets the same every year my youngest niece (I have 3) goes up a school year. She's now 6 but my sister treats her like she's still a baby and she's says she is, but I know she never treated the other 2 the same way at the same age. |

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited for his future, college, work etc, but I'm sad to lose my baby/child, but I'm gaining an adult. |
