In a letter from a solicitor yes
In a post on a forum, absolutely not.
In some cases I like to see a missed word or bad spelling it can show the author wrote it with a certain level of passion, that can be a good thing
Hard to read is always a no and I seldom try to decipher them, legible and understandable is all that's needed

Ahh of course, we all judge, myself included, but I don't judge on spelling alone. Mine certainly leaves a lot to be desired. So I have no right to judge. |

Re read it and look for the broader interpretation yourself. Stop jumping to conclusions and maybe try asking yourself if you are not the one who is being judgmental. |

I would suggest grammer and spelling are more a sign of educational opportunity and a lack of dyslexia than of personality or character. Shakespeare's grammer and spelling was never consistent. We won't mention James Joyce's 'Ulyses'.
If you are reading a techical document grammer and speling is essential. In informal language not so important. |

This is really the point. The number of times I read something and have to TRY and guess what people were trying to say is depressing.
Perfection isn't required, just a reasonable understanding of primary school grammar. |

"..the difference between knowing your shit and knowing you're shit.

Grammar is becoming pointless....
English is great for communication, because of its simplified grammar and also because native speakers can suspend the need for grammar in the aid of understanding.
Remove everything except full stops, commas, hyphens, quotes...
That includes capital letters.... Pointless & stupid words like we're... Pointless.
Comms is more important that rules and standards...
A famous saying amongst the well travelled is:
"The most spoken language in the world is.... Bad English"
Some of you will know it's more important to be able to speak bad English than good English!
Assuming you need to get stuff done!

"There is a huge difference between:
Helping your Uncle Jack off a horse
and
Helping your Uncle jack off a horse.
Punctuation can come in very handy at times"
And there was me thinking the difference in the above was a capital letter denoting a proper noun rather than a lower text letter denoting an adjective in this case. I always believed that such distinctions were classed as grammar and punctuation were the marks you used to divide up written words to help define their contextual meaning.
Sorry if i'm bein a grammar nazi?

The above is actually an interesting case, if you just take it on face value.
But, in the spoken word there is no distinction, yet context is everything.
Ok in books we may need a formal p&g system.
But in immediate correspondence? No. |

Oooo! I hate it when I open a mail and see red lines under words! I makes me think that if someone is so idle that they cant be bothered to put the effort in and use spellchecker then they will be the same in bed.
I also admit that I don't like seeing the Americanization of The Queens English, but that is better than mails covered in red underlines marking spelling mistakes! |

I hear what you are saying and agree when you are writing to someone who knows you, but in a forum where there are trolls who look for ways to twist and misinterpret what is said then surly using a spellchecker and reasonable G&P is sensible as it reduces the chances of this happening to you. |

I think there's a level of acceptable errors I'm sure many of us make spelling mistakes or even use the wrong word even when phonetically correct (example your and you're but not acceptable ur) the odd error is one thing but is a paragraph is filled with them it can be off putting. |

Give me unreconstructed, raw personality everyday of the week...
Completely agree.
Besides auto correct does weird and wonderful things at times. I've sent texts that make no sense, but it's because my phone has a mind of its own. "

"I think there's a level of acceptable errors I'm sure many of us make spelling mistakes or even use the wrong word even when phonetically correct (example your and you're but not acceptable ur) the odd error is one thing but is a paragraph is filled with them it can be off putting."
I think sometimes peoples' brains runs ahead of what they type. I know I often look back on my posts and realise that I've written 'no' when I meant 'know' or 'there' when I meant 'their'. So I can get that we all make mistakes but with built in spell checkers on most browsers these days I see no reason for whole paragraphs full of badly spelt content. |

That's kind of what I mean a couple is a mistake a load is possibly a sign of something else, saying that though if Angelina Jolie sent me random numbers and letters punctuated with @ £ and % I'd probably reply lol |

"..the difference between knowing your shit and knowing you're shit.
Does it matter to you if some people 'no' shit all about the above?"
Perfect example! And the answer is YES!!
"You obviously know your/you're shit."
One is a compliment and one an insult. |
