Campaign to make it illegal for babies/ toddlers to get their ears pierced and set a minimum legal age requirement.
Taken from the campaign site (search '38degrees'): Ear piercing of small children... "serves no purpose other than to satisfy the parent's vanity. Other forms of physically harming children are illegal- this should be no different."
What do you think?

I can see both sides but had my daughters ears pierced when she was a toddler . That was 20 years ago and things may have changed since then . Most of the girls her age had them done . |

I agree! I saw someone else - a mother too - make a post about it on FB this morning, saying that it's no worse than when children get jabs. There's a world of difference between vaccines and making your baby into a fashion accessory. |

I think the people who are behind this campaign could spend their time and energy on far more worthwhile issues.
Such as female genital mutilation ( female circumcision ) which is prevalent in many parts of the World and is not uncommon amongst some ethnic communities living in the UK.
In my view it should be an offence punishable with imprisonment to allow or perform such a practice.  |

It makes me feel sick whenever I walk past Claire's Accessories and other jewellery shops to see a screaming baby/toddler being pinned down by their Mother while a staff member attempts to pierce their ears.
It's uneccessary mutilation, should be treated as such and, yes, parents should face punishment.
You wouldn't pierce their eyebrows or belly button so why should ears be any different? |

My mum made me wait till I was 14. I know, its daft now that I look back but it didnt hurt me to wait. I dont understand why shop staff would attempt to pierce a baby or toddlers ears if their mother has to hold them down. I know its money in the till for them, but dont they have some morals? Yes its abuse |

i think its grim, hate seeing little kids with their ears peirced, minimum age needs introducing, 5 or above, preferably more like 7-8. when the child is old enough to choose for themselves.  |

It is simple, isn't it? A three year old is not responsible enough to give consent to a piercing. Do not subject them to it. Wait until they are at least 16. Please. |

if 'GOD' wanted men to not have a foreskin then why are they there?? surely if you believe god created man in his likeness, then he must have 1??

I've had mine pierced since I was a baby. My mother is 75 and had hers done by a Dr many years ago after being advised it is good for the eyesight to pierce lobes. Pressure points or something, I must ask her again.
Personally I think it's cute on a baby but there must be more to it than that. In some countries (South American) a newborn baby girl has hers done before she leaves hospital. |

do you think that those with the mindset that this subject is not necessary dont also share the view that FGM is also not necessary and a barbaric act..?
for the record i think it should be banned till the child/person can give consent.. |

My ear lobes were pierced when I was baby and I had studs in. As soon as I could I would pull them out. I was finally able to achieve not wearing earrings from the age of 5 as my primary school didn't permit them.
I don't think babies and toddlers need the 'enhancement' or addition of earrings. They are gorgeous enough without them. I also worry when I see some wearing hoops that could get caught and rip their lobes during play.

The number of times I've caught a stud or earring in my hair and nearly ripped my lobe off even as an adult is the reason I think piercing small children is a bad idea! (Apart from the fact I don't like the way it looks) |

My 14 is asking for her belly button to be pierced,I've told her not til she's 16. I find a belly button piercing to be quite a sexualized thing. |

Anything that someone isn't able to choose for themselves should be made illegal. Including religion or any piercings and surgery that isn't for a medical reason. Forcing a religion on a child is abuse isn't it? |

I don't think babies should be allowed to have their ears pierced. I've always thought it was cruel. My daughter is 5 and is asking to get her ears pierced, took her to Claire's and they wanted £45! They would only use a gold stud and the ones she wanted had Swarovski crystals in them! Told her she can wait a few more years! |

I have two issues with it! First I think it should be the child's decision and secondly never, ever, ever with a piercing gun. Guns are for cattle's ears, not human!
My 7 yr old son had his ear pierced in the summer, by a qualified piercer, with a needle because he's very mature and was able to look after it properly himself. His ten year old brother however was squeamish!
A guaged needle is a far safer option for any piercing as it creates the hole for the jewellery to be placed gently inside, whereas a piercing gun blasts a lump of flesh out by shoving the earring in at huge force. That's when swelling and trauma occur.
Plus a needle is single use and sterile, whilst a gun cannot be ever properly sanitised so you're also getting someone else's blood shoved in your ear along with a blunt earring. Yum! |

I had my lobes done with a gun aged ten, had constant bother with them until I just let them heal up then my piercer redid them with a .2 gauge, no problems at all since, actually I've never had trouble with any other needle piercing and I've 19 atm lol

I find at my kids primary school it's a good indicator of the child's behavior. It may be circumstantial, but the brothers who are always in trouble both have their ears pierced. Getting that "bad boy" look at the age of 9.....I'm sure the future is bright for them both.... |

I wouldn't go to Claire's for a piercing. A piercing studio is best for that. They are more responsible and better trained. Furthermore, I'll doubt that they would pierce anyone below the age of 12/14. |

We completely agree.
We both have piercings and tattoos we chose to have as teenagers / adults.
Neither of our children (18 & 20) have either as that is their choice; at the moment. |

I notice a lot of the opposing comments written the petition are pretty much along of the lines of "They're MY child, I'll do what I want" - Not at all fuelling the idea that you're treating your child as a fashion accessory.
They're not a fucking handbag...  |
