Huge discussion locally on social media after it has come out that a local junior school will not be celebrating farthersday anymore in an attempt not to cause upset to children who's farthers are no longer around . This comes after the same school made a massive fuss over Mother's Day with assembly's and coffee morning etc for the mums . Thoughts ? |

It's a bit much if the same school played up mother's day.
They're both largely greeting cards pushed tests but faux concern at a school should be dumped and if anything they should leave family stuff to home. Albeit with support for kids who are without family members, where needed. |

I have a mum and a dad so I celebrate both. Although I do know a lot of children who have both or just live with a mum (but still have contact with fathers) I do know of 3 children that go to my nieces school who only have dads and no mums.....one little girl has two dads
They don't cancel Mother's Day in their school but did invite mums or dads to attend the celebration assembly so maybe they could do the same at Father's Day? |

As a single parent who's ex wife isn't interested in the kids at all I'd be extremely upset if they celebrated mothers day and then ignored fathers day.
For the record we celebrate neither in this house. |

Maybe the school could make both of them parent days or celebrate them but invite both sexes? It does work in my nieces school.....I think that families come so many different ways now that to exclude one sex is a bit mean. The two dads both go to the Mother's Day and Father's Day assembly and they are warmly welcomed as they should be
Also one girl has only her dad because her mum has died and her dad goes to both...... |

"When ubwas at primary school we had time to make a mothers day card. I don't recall making a fathers day card. "
Fathers' Day and grandparents' day are relatively new in terms of celebrating so emphatically.
Parents' day sounds a positive move forward for inclusion of diverse families. Card makers will hate it . |

My kids school make a big fuss about Mother's Day invite the mums to an assembly tea and cakes etc but I've never been invited to a Father's Day assembly and that's 1 of 2 reasons!
1 they don't have an assembly for dads!
2 my ex never passes the message on to me so don't know anything about it! |

Same here, I thank my parents by helping out where I can.
My daughters never see their mother and send mothers day cards to their nana who has been the only constant female in their lives. |

When you consider how many fathers have custody these days it just seems wrong to me.
That's from someone who hasn't got a clue who her father is so has never celebrated it. |

You can't celebrate one and not the other it's wrong. people's home life's are so different to when I was growing up, but families are made up differently now, there should just be a parents day. Discrimination is wrong in any shape or form |

I lost my Dad 20 years ago but still this day is immensely difficult for me. But my kids love celebrating it with their Dad so I concentrate on that for the day. Normally have a boo at some point in the day though

never celebrated fathers day as mine is absent, seperated from my daughters father, but we have made him a card as he is important to her, her nursery havn't made anything for it, but did loads for mothers day, for the same reason as OP stated, to not upset the children who dont have a dad, Iv told them I think thats a lame idea, they do craft in small groups, so could of done something else with the kids they didn't want to upset!

At my workplace the children make cards for both days, inside we just write "love from ... (childs name)"
It works well for everyine and most of all the children love making cards and things to take home ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

It's a load of consumerist driven bollocks!
I don't need tesco to tell me when to buy my mam or dad some flowers.
Anybody that goes along with it is an idiot |

Long before I stopped talking to my parents I was as cynical and uninterested in these as I am valentines day.
People should show loved ones they care spontaneously and not because a date on a calendar dictates it |

You can contact the school and ask for relevant info to be sent to you as well as their mother. |

"Modern warped society seems desperate to pretend that fathers do not exist."
BS when the norm was that children had both parents (living together) only mother's day was celebrated. |

Rather controversial, especially considering all the campaigning that has been done by fathers rights groups over the years.
So here's a question for the school.
What if a child lives with it's Dad and not it's mum?
Don't they think that child might want to celebrate fathers day?
If this was a school that my children went to then I would be writing to the head teacher complaining of anti-family discrimination |

Mothers and fathers day are a bit shit, but we always make sure that the very least a card is given....
I don't think schools should stop these days being celebrated....i think they should just adapt to the childs circumstances....
I grew up in foster care... Making cards in school wasn't a problem, just changed it to suit my needs.
Why everyone has to pussyfoot around is beyond me.

Mothers day and fathers day should both be celebrated equally
Children should be able to show how much they love and appreciate their dads as well as mums ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

Precisely why none of them are celebrated in my house. |

I think they should have both. Our children's school does. But it's not just for Fathers/mothers. Any significant male/female involved in the child's life can come. My first daughters dad died and she may have been a bit upset but not hugely, when these things happened at school. |

same situation however on mothers day the stuff went to grandma instead as i thought it was a nice gesture for this to be done this way
the fathers day went to myself however i have had some mothers day stuff before now
though think yourself lucky nothin worse than doing mothers day stuff at school and the mother doesnt even showing up |

Definitely not. Where the hell would i put all the cards, some from kids i'd never heard of?
Seriously though, the steps some schools actually take to actively discriminate against father's wants looking at. Especially when said schools almost certainly have "Equality" written all over their Mission Statements and Policies, Rules and Regs. |
