the leak is not uncommon... for someone to admit the leak before it is made public is rare....
but i am glad lenny got the honour.... i didn't realise he already has a CBE..... so this is the upgrade... |

Would you rather the honour went to Ben Elton because he's white and hated Margaret Thatcher?

When do I get my medal?"
You have to put 10p in the charity pot first then apply to the queen with a photo |

I've no time for the royal family.
They're thieves.
But when a guy like Lenny Henry is awarded a knighthood.
It is always going to anger, annoy, irritate and piss of a certain type of character.
And for that reason, I am very pleased to see him become Sir Lenny. |

WOW!
So all those white people get them when they do similar work but that's fine. Their work is obviously more worthy.
I saw Lenny Henry on stage last year - it was one of the best things I have ever seen him in. He has talent.
The award may be for his work on racism.

I'm pretty cynical, I'm not really into honours, positive discrimination is bad (in my eyes) I'm not a fan of Lenny. Regardless of how he started out even I can see that he has done some good and maybe deserves some recognition, sure it hasn't done him any harm but he has put a lot of effort for a long time into raising money for very good causes and that is surely something we should all celebrate. |

Good for him. I'm not a fan of his comedy but he's actually really really good in straight acting roles, and you can't deny the charitable work. Just because there are other people out there who do good things doesn't negate his achievements. |

Usually they go through the route of CBE and OBE before getting a knighthood, but it's about bloomin' time he got a knighthood for all the great work he does for 'charidy mate'

"There have been plenty of less deserving knighthoods with the benefit of hindsight!
Well done Sir Lenny."
Some people got them for winning races, with nothing else to their CV of achievements. Maybe that was because of their colour too. |

Do you just object when it's a black person, or is it all "celebrity" honours you're against? Because you could make exactly the same argument about all sportspeople who've ever received honours: yeah they won some medals, it's their job. You're a doctor who's helped some sick people? Congratulations, it's your job. Perhaps only volunteers or people who've received minimum wage for their efforts should ever be recognised. |

That's not how Comic Relief started and you have no idea how much work Lenny Henry, Richard Curtis and Peter Bennett-Jones, Jane Tewson and Ben Zmuda put into getting it going and keeping it going. Without Curtis and Henry it would not have happened at all. I was a lowly temp back then but I saw that hard work.
It's insulting someone's work to suggest they did nothing for twenty years when there is clear evidence of a body of work. Henry also decided to get himself an education and a degree in that time, as he missed that stage due to work. He did the hard work, not just an honorary degree.
Your comments are nothing to do with his talent (or as you believe, lack of) or his achievements but about the fact that he's a black man getting this honour. That's what comes across from your comments.

I remember racism too when it was much more blatant. Now that we've all moved on and it's much more casual, guess what? I'm still experiencing it.
Anti-racist? You bet I'm anti-racist.

Because you were implying that the people who had disagreed with you were stupid, ignorant and displaying a mob mentality. From there to an insult wasn't too much of a leap. Or should we have inferred compliments from your post?
Case proven where and when and how? Glad you're not my lawyer. |

"i assume his award is probably for his charity services to comic relief as to anything else"
It is indeed for his charity work. I read it quoted in a news article on the subject
"
White people get them cos they is white.
Quotas innit.
Shame he's not a woman, they could've ticked two boxes at once. "
Don't be silly, they don't give knighthoods to women
Incidentally, I once met him and shook his hand (though I don't actually get starstruck)
He was trying out new material for a forthcoming TV show and did a series of, shall we say, informal gigs above a pub around the corner from where I used to work.
All of us in the front row got a shake of the hand from the great man.
And he really is a great bloke |

Yes mate, he's a top bloke.
I've been in his company on numerous occasions.
He's still down the list for "King of The Black Country" though.

What was that football play he did about underprivileged kids ?
That was very good.
I adored him in TISWAS and even when he's been rubbish I still sit and smile at the telly. I don't really find him funny anymore but I try and watch everything he's in. |
