Just watched a new horror film/documentary called The Nightmare, about sleep paralysis.
Sleep paralysis happens when your body shuts down from exhaustion but your mind is still on. In the film there are 8 interviewees that suffer from it and tell you about the horrific experiences they go through every night - not being able to physically move any part of your body, sensing evil presences in the room, seeing dark shadows or alien-like creatures creeping in, hearing really loud scary voices....and apparently there's a pain factor too. Women feeling like they're being raped by unknown beings and men getting their privates ripped to shreds by giant metal claws!
Good film doco but fuck me I felt sorry for the people going through it! Most of them have had to deal with it their whole lives as well. Really scary shit |

I know right! And doctors don't really have a cure or an explanation for it. People on there have a few theories though, some say that we live in different plains to the underworld but during sleep a few of us can either cross over or they can come over to our plain to terrorise us. Others believe it could have something to do with aliens doing research on us and generally fucking with our heads.
Oh and the visuals of the film are pretty realistic too while the victims recount their scary encounters. |

I've had this on and off for years, more a nuisance now than scary but one sensation i get is like being a few feet under water and rising to the surface feeling the pressure bleed off as i wake up. Then i have to wait until fully awake before trying to sleep again otherwise it starts immediately.
Very odd sensations and feelings of thing and beings around you |

I have experienced this on a couple of occasions. Nothing more terrifying then being awake and being unable to move and unable to scream for help. I always feel like there's someone standing in the corner when it happens to me. Its truly horrific. |

It happens. And if you believe in all that, then you know it's a whole different ball game.
Luckily it has not happened to me. But, I know many who this has happened to.
I believe in all this and I don't think it is just exhaustion on it's own that causes it.
...if you believe in black magic and so forth then you kind of know what you're dealing with.

I've had something similar and ascertained that it was because my ex had come back as I felt incredibly trapped. Have to say being locked in an under floor safe on my back (with the key in my hand) was the most frightening thing I have experienced and when it was over, I had to get out of bed to make sure it wasn't true |

This happened to me once, I was in bed and I felt someone put their hand over my mouth and push my head down into the mattress really hard, I tried to move to free myself but nothing happened, I finally woke up shouting. I thought the house was haunted for ages until I found out what it was |

"My best friend has this but it can go two ways.
When it's paralysis it's bad and horrible but when he's lucid dreaming he can control his dreams making for some fantastic ones. "
I sometimes have lucid dreams. I can self hypnotise into lucid state. I can also wake up to go to the loo or get a drink and then go back to sleep and re-start the dream where I left off.

I f**king hate sleep paralysis!
For those who also suffer, Just focus on moving a tiny part of your body (like your toes) and you can trigger yourself out of it. The more you struggle to get up, the worst it gets as you start to panic.
I've had lucid dreams before. Amazing! |

I get sleep paralysis, although from what I experience its hardly a medical condition when there's a demon stood right in front of you laughing at you so loud your chest vibrates lol, but yeah I watched the nightmare too the guy in Manchester was bang on and I experienced very similar things to him Apart from the fighting bit |

I get this. I finally wake myself all the way up shouting at the person in the corner!
It's so vivid that I often have to check the house to make sure noone is there before I can get back to bed.
Apparently part of one of the stages of sleep is your brain puts you in a form of paralysis so you can rest. Usually you are in deep sleep by this point but some of us get it at the wrong stage of sleep.
I also get the opposite where my brain doesn't paralyse me so I walk in my sleep too. As you can imagine I can be a joy to sleep with |
