My singing is bad enough. We've got gigs on so I think the MD might get strict.

I can't think of one sport that women can compete on an equal level or equivalent as a man can In sport... not for one moment say we can't do them... but when it comes to professional I'm not sure I can think of one.. golf...tennis..football..Rugby etc even snooker and darts can't be as good

True xx but I can't watch something that is worse than what I could watch. I find the goalkeeper embarrassingly bad in women's football... bit of course.. any game can be exciting no we matter what the level.. but I wouldn't watch... maybe would if England got to the final x

I hope you're watching then.

I'm not a sporty person. I watched more sport in 2012 than I had in the previous 47 years of my life. I do watch some set piece things, like finals. I come to it just on what I see at the time and I'll be cheering if England make it to the final.

Mr Blatter wanted the women to wear tight shorts to make it more watchable

Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)

I think the women's game has come along quite well, considering how long they've been professional.

By watching and showing there's a market, it's more likely that there will be more money I rated in the game which should produce better players and a better "product" (blugh)

I'm not a big football fan, prefer rugby union to play and watch, though I still play 5 a side football to keep fit.

The women's game has come on a lot, but it will never be up to the standard of the men's game, as women simply aren't as physically strong or as fast.

The women's first touch and ball control (oo er matron), is very good, but their speed on the ball, crossfield play, shooting and goalkeeping is like watching 12 year old boys.

It's the same with any sport that requires physical power, tennis, golf, squash, athletics etc.

The only sport I can think of where they compete on an equal level is horse riding, but then, it's the horse that does the work.

not at all.... they would likely win against colombia and mexico but it puts a lot of pressure on them....

two fantastic games in the "group of death" last night.... Sweden and Nigeria drew 3-3..... USA beat Australia 3-1....

England vs France is on BBC2 today... 6pm kick off (coverage starts at 5.30)

France will start off as slight favourites... and are a lot of peoples favourites to win the whole thing....

if england can get a draw i think that would be a good start to the tournament for them

Unfortunately women's football is gradually becoming cynical and dirty.

There has been a noticeable increase in violence, simulation and general gamesmanship.

The standard and quality of football is improving all the time though and the top international teams like Germany, Japan, Usa, Brasil etc, play some very decent football.

Just wondering at what level an international women's team would be able to compete against men. Anyone care to hazard a guess or is it a meaningless comparison?

As an example England ladies played against a Middlesex U15 team at cricket and lost, but it was competitive.

Not really. It reinforces the status of women as 'other' and outsiders to the sport. Mens is the 'proper' game while women have their own special category.

And if it's just being pedantic, why can't it be the World Cup and the men's World Cup?

Hopefully it will be reviewed retrospectively. But France would have won with 10, and probably 9!

Treated as a novelty?

Some of the most talented, successful, respected and best paid athletes in all sports (and of all time) are women.

Women's football has come a long way in recent years.

Professional leagues across the globe as well as a major European club tournament.

So the women don't have to be amateurs, working by day then training at night.

They are now full time professional, dedicated footballers.

The women's World Cup gets bigger coverage and more viewers and respect worldwide, every four years.

The popularity of the game in terms of young girls playing it and audience figures both at matches and televised, are on a healthy rise.

Sponsorship, prize money and wages have never been higher.

Facilities never better.

"Just wondering at what level an international women's team would be able to compete against men. Anyone care to hazard a guess or is it a meaningless comparison?

As an example England ladies played against a Middlesex U15 team at cricket and lost, but it was competitive."

And there you have it. I suspect the result would be the same if the women's national football team played against a top club side of 14 year old boys too.

I watched the match, and let's be frank, it was worse than watching teenage boys. Passing was awful, shooting was lame, crossing was just boot and hope. It bears little resemblance to the men's game, and though much improved, it probably never will because women simply aren't as fast and powerful as men.

As regards the game itself, France outplayed and outclassed England in all areas of the game and didn't look to be having to work too hard to do it.

I can't think of one sport that women can compete on an equal level or equivalent as a man can In sport... not for one moment say we can't do them... but when it comes to professional I'm not sure I can think of one.. golf...tennis..football..Rugby etc even snooker and darts can't be as good"

Two sports where women compete directly with men, and often beat them, equestrian and motorcycle racing.

The Swiss were robbed, what a shocking penalty decision in favour of the Japanese.

The French got away with at least three very nasty deliberate "challenges" ment to cause injury.

As to who's gonna win? I#d love to do 'more detailed research but i'll plump for :

The one with the most brazilians in it.

"Who's going to win?

Anyone going to watch?

I might if they just called it The World Cup.

I know this would come up....

fifa have different names for all their world cups to differentiate...

so world cup, womens world cup.... mens under 20 world cup/womens under 20's world cup... and mens under 17 world cup....

UEFA do the same things for all their european tournaments.....

Yeah I know.

I'd either like it to just be 'The World Cup' or for them to call it 'The Men's World Cup' and 'The Women's World Cup'.

isn't that being just a bit pedantic....

Not really. It reinforces the status of women as 'other' and outsiders to the sport. Mens is the 'proper' game while women have their own special category.

And if it's just being pedantic, why can't it be the World Cup and the men's World Cup?"

Maybe, if you care so much about Women's equality, you could point out to them, the women that is, that men played professional soccer for over a 100 years before they broke through the £10 a week earnings barrier.

so we all ready for tonights game.... 9pm bbc3.....

so to give you an idea of the scenario's.... i have a cheat sheet prepped... ahem...

if england win tonight and finish top of the group.... they will stay in montreal and play the 2nd place team in group e in the last 16... who play their games at half midnight.... that game would be at 9pm on Sunday

if england win and finish 2nd in the group... they will move on to ottawa, and play Norway.... that game would be Monday night at 9pm

and then it gets really complicated

if england draw... and finish 3rd.. they there are two different scenario's... they would either play the USA in Edmonton (kickoff tuesday morning 1am our time)

or... they would play Japan in Vancouver (kickoff wednesday morning 3am our time)

USA are ranked 2 in the world.... Japan are the Currant world cup holders....

there is one other scenario out there...

If columbia beat england.... and mexico beat france.... england end up bottom of the group.. and go home!

there... any question... ask someone else!!!!

What did you think of the play acting last night?

Any thoughts on the imaginary yellow cards being waved about?

The games are only taking up the back page of a paper, not the front one, thats hardly getting behind them.

Dont compare the two sports, there are far too many differences, not all male footballers deserve that critism of yours, a lot however deserve to be kicked out of the game.

Have the final say as otherwise this will go back and fore and de-rail what the thread is about.

probably because apparently the team and the press are basically travelling around together, and are interacting... where as with the mens teams it is now very much kept at shoulders length...

thats why you get the interesting stories from the players themselves...

for example.. casey stoney, who got a well deserved MBE last week, Talks about being the first "out" England Captain (for those who don't know she came out last year)

Karen Carney talks about being homeless at one point, and wanting to give up football because she had severe depression

the "mini messi" Fran Kirby actually gave up football at 14 after the death of her mum, and came back into the game only 3 years ago...

there are stories all over the squad, and the ladies are more open to those stories being told....

roll on monday night... i think they have a brilliant chance of winning against norway... only thing is that the manager tinkers way too much with the squad.... just put out the best 11 and win!

Have to say, those guys who put those photos out there are effectively sexually harassing and assaulting someone!

Then the women are given advice along the grounds of "take the higher ground".

Where as they should say "I'm fit, athletic and hot and like to look

Obviously more eloquent than that.

And this stems from our fascination with nudity, that comes from our own repression.

To be honest, there's always a bias when commentating on games involving home nations. It was only towards the end of the game where they said that Columbia were getting the rough side of calls.

I think England still did enough to progress though. Did you see Amadine Henry's goal in the France game?! 30 yards out!

The attitude is usually pretty terrible, my high school were Boy's and Girl's Scottish Champions when i was in 6th year, the girls played at Linlithgow Rose's ( amatuer level) stadium for their final, the boys played at Hampden Park for theirs ( even at Tannadice for the semi). They were also in the eveing news after they won the cup, full page spread as they were the first edinburgh team since the war, the girls got barely a column inch.

I'd be very surprised if girls think that way about football. Is it the BBC's role to be an agent of social change?

Shouldn't civil society be the agent of change? Shouldn't a media organisation just reflect that change?

Is the BBC a political player now? I really have detected no demand for them to screen women's football - although I accept that the BBC is working hard to create that demand

When my nephews go to watch Aresenal Women's play it's usually full. Maybe those people and others like them have made the demand. Just because it hasn't been widely covered before doesn't mean there was no demand.

would you have been watching something on bbc3 tonight that had been bumped.... i think not

most of the games have been on bbc2 and bbc3... i don't see any problem with that! especially with the times of the kickoffs......they haven't exactly been in "prime time"

and football is one of the fastest growing sports played by girls....

Most Scottish people hate cricket but its still forced upon us. It would be like us forcing shinty on you, if you dont like it, switch off. Getting more women involved in sport is a good thing.

"Fastest growing is one of the most annoying descriptors I see.

I'd I start a religion right now and get my mate to join it it will instantly be the fastest growing religion in the world having increased its membership but 100% in just a few minutes.

It a meaningless way to describe something.

The BBC is probably correct - that if they promote something enough then an audience will be created.

I just don't know why they feel the need though

"I wonder why the BBC is pushing this so hard.

There is minimal demand for it if we're honest"

because it's an IP they've probably gotten quite cheap and they think if they can make a good demand for it it will make them a shit ton of money in the long term.

kinda like how there wasn't much demand for reality TV shows before big brother was pushed so hard by c4 and it's now a massive money spinner.

They've been pushing cycling a lot since we got good at it, and suddenly an audience appears, if England/Scotland/Wales/N.I. is good at something they'll push it as an audience will want to watch. Tennis is absurdly popular now that Andy Murray is half decent, you'd never see anyone up here talking about it as much before that, barring my mum, she liked Borg a lot.

Sometimes U.K

20+ years ago I played in a premiership ladies team and used to have a decent turnout of supporters.

I guess it's like many sports, not being aware how popular it is if you're not interested in it.

Yes, but many sports COULD be popular if they were marketed heavily. How did the BBC alight upon women's football?

"Yes, but many sports COULD be popular if they were marketed heavily. How did the BBC alight upon women's football?"

Growing market sector, cheap in, upcoming large tournament, under represented target market with little competition?

Why do you think they are doing since ego clearly already have an agenda decided.

Maybe as a public broadcasting company with a remit to reach out to every demographic in this licence fee paying country?

I don't get why they show the men's football footballer matches all year round, moving other established programming and series out of the way. I accept that they are meeting some of their audience need and switch off or switch over.

Yes, but how does the BBC decide which 'under-represented' sports should be promoted?

There are many little-watched sports.

How do they decide?

It's the only thing they have left, they've lost all the other sports they once owned, f1,mens footy,fa cup etc etc

"Yes, but many sports COULD be popular if they were marketed heavily. How did the BBC alight upon women's football?"

Becuase its a major event in womens football, and there is a large possible audience for it, more people will watch mens world cup game than a premiership game, same goes for women, they know theres a market.

Cricket is marketed heavily by the BBC up here, yet no one gives a shit, what if i took BBC licencing money and marketed Shinty to you lot? No audience, as only Scots understand it, football, everyone understands it.

you could claim F1 is "over-represented"

what about the golf?

what about athletics?

what about rowing?

for example... bbc 2 are about to show some more womens football..... what spectactular new bbc programming would they be showing at 1am that has been bumped for this....

i'm going to go out on a limb.. and going to suggest none.... only thing being bumped is BBC News 24... what can still be seen on the BBC News 24 channel....

Canada according to his post.

I didn't realise that was against England. I don't do sport. I did the Olympics, I know watch Ireland Six Nations matches and the tennis finals."

Do you have a fav tennis player? I realise that's off topic

The fa have been pumping money into women's football over the few years as we were behind all aspects compared with many of the established professional women's teams out there.. The more interest created eventually equates to a bigger purse for the club's. . Then follows better backroom staff better training better wages all things to attract women to the sport who would otherwise choose different career paths.

Watched the ladies tonight and must admit I was quite surprised how much it's progressed over the last few years. I was very impressed and that second goal was good enough to grace any stage, a cracking 20yrd shot. A honest sporting display of football with none of the diving and cheating that we see every week in the premier league. I'll be watching more of it
