I read somewhere that they are taken from the wild and held captive to make money from tourists. I don't know how true that is but it has put me off ever doing it. |

They were still doing it in October last year in sharm. |

We did this in Jamacia and the ponds they were in were tidal, and constructed in such a way that wild dolphins could if they wanted visit, and they did we were told by the staff, and also if they wanted the trained ones could leave and sometimes did but usuallyt returned as the conditions were better in the ponds. Obvioulsy this could be a load of tosh but it certainly looked to my eye that what they were saying regarding the access was right.
Oh and having a pair of dolphins push you out the water is an awesome feeling! |

I had the pleasure of swimming with wild dolphins in Tampa back in '94. It wasn't intentional, I was in the water and all of a sudden there they were, which was cool.
Then I swam with captive dolphins at Discovery Cove Orlando about 6yrs ago, it was nice but nowhere near as special. |

I kayaked with wild dolphins when I was living in Wales, they used to come up alongside us.  No tropical weather or cages required. |

Swam with dolphins in Jamaica, which was great to interact with them.
Didn't come anywhere need swimming with wild sharks in the Maldives, not quite as much interaction though...... I'm pleased to say. |

I wouldn't have thought dolphins would be up for kayaking. They must find it so difficult holding the oars with their flippers  |

It's incredibly cruel and I would be wary of paying any organisation that offers swimming with dolphins.
They way they are caught is horrible and their parents mourn for them for ages.
Imagine one day you have the whole ocean to explore and the next you are in a swimming pool with people hanging off you. |

They are feed everyday without chasing around the worlds oceans and sea, in clean water, vets on hand and prtected from any enimies they might have.
I would say they live in most places a wonderful lazy life.

There's no justification for keeping such intelligent large creatures captive, none.
Anyone who has swam with them in captivity is just contributing to unnecessary and unjustifiable cruelty for their own gain and profit. |

I swam with them in captivity,I made no profit. My gain was being able to stroke and interact with a magnificent creature. Had I of known they were mistreated by the people who ran the 'show' I would definitely not have partaken in this activity, alas I didn't know til the following year. You can't blame a person for wanting to be up close to these magnificent creatures, sadly it is not something you can safely do in the wild. I am not condoning cruelty |

here's one for you though if dolphins do not understand freedom who does a killer whales dorsal fin never stand up in captivity? |

I don't blame you or anyone else for wanting to interact with them or any other creatures, I just think they should be free. Its hard to justify keeping any animals captive and our own wants do not out way theirs. Seeing animals is educational and enjoyable its just not always in their best interest even if conditions seem good. Have been to zoo's, safari park's and enjoyed it but I cant support many now, its just wrong. |

Some of these posts are wholly inaccurate.
I lived in Mexico for many years in a place called Puerto Aventuras. My condo overlooked Discovery Dolphin- one of the main places they run these swim with dolphin things.
The Dolphins there naturally mate and reproduce, are very happy and have not been "caught and held prisoner". Very naive to paste every establishment with the same tarnished brush. The vet there is at the forefront of marine veterinary science and regularly travels to the states and hosts all sorts of groundbreaking marine medicine practice involving Dolphins, held both in captivity and wild.
Did I ever swim with them? No. But that's because I am a diver, not because I am anti establishment.
People gain a wonderful insight into the species, as well as get to play with them. Dolphins adore humans and love to play and show off. You only have to see them in the wild to see how much they adore interaction and "playing" with humans.
The only thing I would say, is that if you are on your period, don't go, as they are aware and can try to seclude you as their way to protect you.
Enjoy it if you decide to go! And although this is a positive place I am talking about, not all are, so do your research online from multiple sources.  |
