How does Skype work?

Ok imagine we are completely useless at all things techy. How does it work, we have it but is it anonymous? Can others see who we have been chatting to, can anyone else see what we are doing?

Cheers

It's anonymous if you enter fake info when registering.

If someone looks at your account, on your computer, they will see who you've been chatting to.

Only you, the person you are talking to, the American government and the British government will know what happens in your phone/video calls.

It's basically a chat app that is through the Internet.

You can send messages or webcam free on a 1 to 1 or in a group. Not 100% sure but as far as I'm aware you cant search other people's contacts.

Just delete history/ conversation afterwards.

Hey there,

You can set up your Skype account to be as anonymous/public as you feel. I'll list things you can do to make it more 'private'. The reverse is true for 'public'

1. Choose a Skype username or email that would not identify you (frequently used email address or with personal names in)

2. Similarly, if you choose to have a profile picture, it's maybe not a good idea to have your faces in it.

3. You can choose whether or not you want your account to be searchable in the Skype directory (Settings Privacy, or something)

4. You can choose not to display your age, location (I think), number of contacts and perhaps another variable. Also within Profile settings.

5. Your added contacts cannot see who you have been talking to, don't worry. The only person able to read your messages/see you on can is the person you are directly in contact with.

Please, others chip in if I've missed anything obvious

It's a chat app and fairly secure. Although people on your friendslist can find your IP using /cmd if they wanted to.

I have additional tools that show all the friends of my friends and some of their profile data as well, for no real reason other than i like pissing about with things and pushing apps to their limits to see what can be done on them exactly.

its private enough if your only chatting with friends

however its not private enough with microsoft as skype allows full access to all of your computer even past your firewall
