If your with BT they can help, can't remember how it works now they put your number on a list or something it's free as well, you might get the odd cold call slip through I did it years ago and can't remember getting any cold calls since, hope it helps.

.

You need to register with the Telephone Preferential Scheme, this can be done on line or by telephone, just google it.

It's called the Telephone Preferance Service. Look it up it's free and genrally works. Ive used it for the last 5 years any calls that get through I ask for the company name and state that as I have opted out then they are breaking regs which gets them off the line quick as and stops them calling again.

don't put your phone numbers on e forms, or any forms for that matter, unless it is imperative.

check that your number is not available on facebook or other networking sites due to not adjusting your preferences - go to account/ preferences/ privacy or the like.

we did the tp thing.. and still get the odd call... we just have fun with them now.

if they ask to speak to my other half.. i tell them i will go and get him.. then pretend he is tied to the bed with a gag... he will say things like... please dont hurt me mistress... and i'll say.. you promised to behave and pleasure me,, you needed a good spanking...

or one of us will try to sell them something... like off shore banking,, and we can offer them a damn good deal on used condoms or some such thing...they normally hang up...

makes our day when we get a cold call. lol

Hi Jo xx

Google "Truecall"! It is a bit of kit that will let good calls through and block those annoying silent, marketing, sales and just plain nusance calls... It has a phone book and an answering machine. Will even play a message for unauthorised callers that effectively says Fook off! (can record your own if you actually want to say that! lol) Was on Dragons Den and ALL the Dragons wanted a piece.

Works fantastic and although is around £100, well worth it..

We were getting regular cold calls from a local window firm.

After repeated requests from me not call anymore because all ours are newish I accused the bloke on the phone of shagging my wife, and that he was only calling to check if I was in.

He hasn't called us since

Never found out though if he had shagged Kate

if you are really being hassled, explain to family and office that they should declar who they are as soon as it goes to messaging and you will pick up or ring straight back. I did this for a few months and the ad calls stopped coming.

I usually just pick up the phone, see who it is that's calling then ask them to wait a moment.

Every 30 seconds or so I unmute the phone, tell them how sorry I am for keeping them waiting and that their call is important to us, then mute the phone again and carry on with what I'm doing.

Funny thing - next time you go to talk to them, they have usually gone ...

Jo- ring BT up and tell them you are being harassed.

I did this and they changed my phone number and got me on Telephone Preference Service.

It has been great. because it was harassment they allowed me to change telephone number free of charge. The only calls I get are maybe twice a week a recorded voice which I think is something to do with loan write offs.

I put the phone down on that one.

As already mentioned, get on TPS. It'll take 28 days for them to process it during which time you can still get cold callers contacting you. However once the month is up you can politely inform whoever is calling you that you're registered with TPS and that they have just breached the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003.

I find that mentioning the above before asking to have my details removed from their database is effective. Just asking to be removed wasn't getting me anywhere.

Unfortunately it won't stop ALL cold calls. The TPS isn't able to influence companies based abroad, nor is it effective against companies claiming to be performing 'market research'.

I'm sure most have already heard this before, but if not listen to this guy's way of dealing with cold callers...

We have “Anonymous” numbers blocked, i.e. the caller must release their number to get through, costs £1.50 pm with Virgin, since having it over 3 years, I cannot remember the last time we received a cold call.

Just start talking dirty to em!

What are you wearing usually makes em go a bit quiet and when you mention that you think they sound hot, that usually works lol

Yep! Worked for us too at first. Now some of the overseas call centres have an "adopted" UK phone number that comes up on your phone. When you phone it back it is unobtainable.

As more companies have moved abroad to take advantage of the freedom to make calls like this, it is going to be more of a problem. They will look for ways around the call barring and blocking, so that is why we bought the Truecall unit..

Oh, Jo... Those calls that get you out of the bath are me and her.. We have a telescope set up to see you getting out of the bath all dripping wet and yummy! lol
