Posted a similar thread last year.

A year on and it's really difficult maintaining muscle mass, or even that nice solid look that used to be easy when younger.

Have to train smarter and harder than ever before.

A small relapse in diet or a few day's off and can instantly see the difference.

Unlike in 20's just had to look at a dumbell and my biceps grew.

Determined to stay fit and healthy and in decent shape for as long as I can.

But how do other guy's and women find working out in mid to late 40's and beyond?

We both train together so male and female points of view welcome.

Thanks.

Not easy but think its worth trying to stay fit. Never been 'buff' but still trying. Xc

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

I just weight train to keep at a certain level of fitness. I have no interest in buffing up or anything. Although I do agree that its harder to lose and maintain weight these days - I barely overeat for a few days and the pounds pile on. Luckily they come right back off again.

Having said that, I weigh less now than I have for over 20 years, so it can be done.

I think it would depend on how strict your diet is and what your actually eating.

Also how intense the workout is you are doing and how often.

what type of foods are you eating? and how many days a week you train?

You trained before so its not completely alien?

I know how you feel. I find that running and cycling helps keep the pounds off. To be honest you both look in pretty good shape.

Diet is very good, am diabetic so have to eat correctly.

Have always been super fit, I guess am comparing myself with me ten years ago. Never going to get to that level again.

My point is, it's much harder to maintain once one passes 40.

Yes i would say you would need to maintain as i do. I look half the size if I go off track with my eating or training to be honest.

You could try increasing protien in take which will help all round i think definately if your wanting to hold a particular shape.(porridge oats) me personally though.

Plenty of cardio too as you get older this will help you hugely not just the way you look but health wise too. Rowing machine or bike if your hitting the gym

Brighton - even Hove!

I find that eating a slab of cake and reading 'mens health' works wonders for my 32 waist line.

Thank the lord you haven't had children. I can categorically say once you have had a child, your body and where you store fat will change forever. Regardless of age.

Joints ache more the next morning,

Do shorter sessions now, as muscles seem to exhaust quicker.

Apart from that seem to cope ok

I still love training...but keeping in shape is as much (probably more) about what you do out of the gym as in it. Nutrition (diet) is key....eating reasonably clean and little and often works for me

My gym trainer won Mr Universe competition in Germany a couple of years ago. He's now set up business in America. He won the over 40's category. So it can be done. His sessions cost me an arm & a leg though. I'm sexy & I know it

hes nice and fit now lost loads of weight and eating sodding more even with cream cakes

I've gone from 14st 2 to 16st 6 in the 12 weeks since I started permanent nights as I've been too tired to go to gym while my body clock adjusted. Have got back on it now so hopefully I can lose it again as I go 5 times a week again. Found its a lot harder to maintain it now I'm in my 40's compared to my 20's. Just have to push myself harder.

To be honest I am a somewhat "lapsed" gym member at the moment but when I'm back in the swing of it (excuse the pun) I find that little and often will maintain a good level of fitness. Balance that with a decent eating regime and it's more than possible to lose weight as well. I do virtually no cardio...pretty much all weight work. Easy to put weight back on though if you start to lapse....I'm 56 by the way.

When your body gets to a certain age it starts to produce less testosterone which in turn affects muscle growth and repair . Nowadays there are natural test boosters which you can buy . Also mixing up your training program and doing heavy squats and deadlifts can cause your body to produce more testosterone .

It's also a potential minefield for scams too. The right diet contains the ingredients needed for all hormone production. Lifestyle will influence its production but our endocrine systems work constantly to achieve balance, so checks and balances kick in, to get near stability.

Growth hormone levels also diminish with age, so other factors affect people as they age too.

Actually I was being facetious...
