Careers question, choosing where to live

Haha may seem a little weird coming on here asking about careers, but there are loads of people on here so all advice would be useful.
I've finished uni last week, just waiting for graduation now. But I now need to find a job. I'm just not sure where to look really.
How did you all decide where you wanted to live after leaving home? Where friends were or just wanted a fresh start on your own?
I'm not really keen on the idea of living at home again, 4 years of only being there for 3 weeks tops at a time has meant I want to move on, not back in (to my Mum's disappointment).
I have a few ideas on what I want to do, but it's just choosing a location really...
Wow this was an essay, sorry! |

Probably not much help, but I moved back home partly because I couldn't afford not to and partly for a relationship. 9 years on I'm happily ensconced in a good career in the same city, student loans paid off, with a lovely house and very comfortable financial situation, but there's a little part of me that has always thought I should have taken the opportunity to go and work abroad or in London or something while I was young and mortgage free. |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
Do you know what you want to do in the world of work?
Sign up with a temp agency and at least get earning.
I applaud you not wanting to move back in with your parents. Pick somewhere and give it a go.
Only you can choose where you want to be. Having some friendly faces around can make it less lonely.
I didn't have much choice when I left home as my parents kicked me out and it was so long ago the world has become a different place. |

You always have a place to stay with me here in London, Anna |

Yeah I know what I want to go into. Have a choice of 3 or 4 areas I'm interested in.
"has your Uni had a milk round and where are the key employers in your field based, work it from there....
good luck...
will you get a 2:1 or above ?"
Checked milkround but it's a bit shit if I'm honest, as it was all for graduate schemes which I applied to a while ago but didn't get onto one. Should get a 2.1, if not something has gone terribly wrong!
"What subject did you graduate in?"
Environmental Science |

In all seriousness there's a lot of big business in Reading and you're not too far from London...I'd stay put and try and find something...always move if it's pants. |

good luck for your 2:1, I hope you get it.
and sorry you didn't get in a Graduate Scheme, don't be disheartened. I have been part of the Graduate Scheme selection for 3 FTSE and some of the people we passed over, did the best |

I'm not fussed about the grad schemes tbh, I only applied as I felt obliged too, There was only 1 that I really felt excited about doing. Plus you have to be quite lucky to get one. |

That'd be my advice. Stay where you are and seek work nationwide, make it clear to perspective employers you have no ties and will happily relocate |

Newcastle upon Tyne |
Probably not much help but joined the army and was provided with room and then later once married, houses as we moved around the world eventually sent to Newcastle and we thought nice city with plenty to offer let's stay here, 12 years later best decision we made. |

I know someone who graduated and just looked for jobs in the places he wanted to live, either London or Edinburgh. Ended up living in London for 4 years and now looking at jobs abroad.
Wish I had had the balls to move away when I quit uni, but I had friends around here and I am too scared of the unknown! Now I have commitments around here and a house so probably stuck for a while. |
