West Ham V Millwall
More police were deployed for the last game they played than for any other event in the UK that year. Including the visit of an American president. |

"What about other sports, Steve Ovett and Seb Coe had a pretty good rivalry, and Chris Eubank vs Nigel Benn. "
Ovett and Coe was a fantastic rivalry.
To me the best rivalry ever was Visinitini vs Roche in the Giro D'Italia in the 80's |

The Rangers and Celtic rivalry is by far the most intense given the religious and historic side of things. I'm a Sunderland fan and our rivalry with Newcastle is intense but falls short of the Old Firm. It's not on these shores but the most intense football rivalry I've ever seen is in Argentina, Boca vs River Plate. That's crazy. All to do with wealth and affluence. |

"Yeh but are any as hate filled as old firm "
If they are it's a sad state of affairs. I don't think that level of irrational hatred is anything for a city to be proud of |

"Yorkshire v Lancashire. 600 years in the making, if you've ever been to a leeds v man utd game you will know what I mean."
That's not likely to happen for quite some time though. |

I'd agree with that. I love Glasgow and have many good friends there but the only time I've been there on a derby day it was a horrible and slightly intimidating atmosphere. No city should be proud of that |

Graff V Seles
Sampras V Agassi
Federer V Nadal.
Rival born out of respect not violence and hatred like some of the football ones.
Tottenham V Arsenal is an example of silly rivalry and I speak as an Arsenal fan. |

"Try walking around Portsmouth in a scumhampton shirt!"
It is bad here, never known anything like it - the songs that get sung even when they aren't playing each other! |

Even as a Liverpool fan knowing the rivalry with utd,
West ham v Millwall has to take top spot as far as violence goes... |

"Sheen Vs Roberts"
Outside of good ol' blighty, you'll rarely find a bigger rivalry than that between the General Motors fans & the Ford fans in the Aussie V8 Super car series! Sheer hate going on there. |

"Everyone knows it's utdvLiverpool
Christ they've not even swapped a player in like 50 years" best part of this is the city fans desperately trying to create a rivalry with Liverpool now they are a "massive " club. Laughable |

Ill buy that...the Boca and River one i mean. True hated in its purest sense. Their last meeting recently at La Bombanera in Boca was even abondoned when home supporters pepper sprayed some River players. |

Bjorg vs McEnroe - 2 totally different characters, one cool calm and collected, the other a total maniac. One methodical, precise, ruthless, the other reliant on instinct and natural genius. A brilliant rivalry |

Senna/Prost
Hakkinen or Hill/Schumacher
With regards to the Old Firm game, there's probably a shitload more fighting at an Edinburgh derby than there is in Glasgow, the Police presence is a fraction of the size so they've got more of a chance to batter each other. Although back in the non segragated 100,000 plus capacity days of Hampden, this was not the case. |

Hinault & LeMond, when they were on the same team........
In Australia, there's pitched battles at (their equivilant of) touring car races, between Holden and Ford supporters |

West Wales and Cardiff |
I'm a Swansea fan who's lived in Cardiff for years, so I have an interesting perspective on rivalries, although I don't buy into any of the nonsense (don't mind banter).
Nothing compares to Rangers v Celtic in the UK though. Nowhere near.

Army v Navy rugby at Twickenham or the parachute regiment v royal marines boxing. You won't find a better display of intense rivalry and pride, all in the true spirit of sportsmanship. |

Yep 2011 semi final. Both countries declared a national bank holiday. TV ratings were 135 million.

Football rivalries are mostly based on local bragging rights and sometimes get out of hand. Most are passionate and intense.
However, Celtic v Rangers has religious undertones and West Ham v Millwall stems from the general strike amongst the dockers in 1926. This gives these two the edge on all others in the UK as it's about more than football.

People living in England don't realize how bad the rivalries between old firm fans can get. It's partly because the media south of the border don't report Scottish stories as well as they should. Because of my job I have had to work with a number of people who have murdered others because of this match and no it's nothing to be proud of. The charity nil by mouth was set up by the girlfriend and family of a young Celtic fan with his whole life in front of him who's crime was to walk past a pub in east end of Glasgow wearing a Celtic scarf after leaving Celtic park. He had just finished his exams and passed all of them only to have his life snubbed out by a sword weilding maniac. His head was almost severed tragically the brutes father had done something similar in his youth. This is all to commonplace in Scotland but this charity works to educate people on sectarianism on both sides and to bring them closer that is something to be proud of |

Wigan v St Helens Rugby League. Plenty of joshing goes on if the kids bring home St Helen's supporter friends (I have progressed. I no longer ban them to the shed). |
