"whatsapp is free, long as you are happy to give your number. (I'm guessing facetime uses your number anyway)
Tho you can't 'live chat' by vid, you can record voice and/or vid clips.. "
Thanks. I don't mind giving out my number and have that app already.
Would prefer a cam app so still looking if anyone knows one. Might ask on another site as well actually. |

"We were already using skype but it uses up minutes. I think it does anyway."
If you skype another username it's free. If you call phone numbers it's not free. |

Like call them using the camera symbol? I didn't know that. Will give it a try later, thanks for explaining. |

To call phone numbers with Skype you have to pay Skype money. To call usernames it is free. |

Yeah, just start a viewcall with them. If you don't know how to start videocalls on skype, you might want to google it. |

See, i don't see the point in that because you have the skype app and can call them for nothing.
Group videos are even free now, which is good. |

Been using skype for ages, just who i'm calling keeps running out of credit because they're on a phone.
Ugh not sure how this app works still, it's annoying. And nobody replies on the skype frums. |

I use Skype for business purposes - it's better for me than giving out my mobile number and cheaper to call people overseas from my skype account than my mobile or landline.
I couldn't open a conversation with my clients with 'what's your skype username so I can make it free?'. |

Then they should hook their phone up to their home wifi rather than use their 3G data.
They will have the same problem with *any* app if they are not on a home wifi network. |

But it will still use your data allowance if you have one. If you only have a set amount of data per month it will take your credit or stop working when you run out of data allowance. If you have unlimited data it won't matter. |

Yes, it uses your data allowance like any other app does. That is separate to paying skype. If you don't have a large data allowance on your mobile contract (I have 25GB), you should only use it on a wifi network. |

Yeah thanks for all the replies. I was hoping for one that doesn't use data, but pretty sure they don't exist. Aw well.
I have free calls on my phone so gonna suggest i call him instead. Plus skype cuts off when he's on the bus anyway. |

Of course they use data, how can they not? Writing this reply has used data (whether WiFi or mobile data).
Good luck with finding a dataless data transmission service! |

Yes they do exist. You either use data or wifi. You can't just connect to the Internet without somehow paying for it. If he's on the bus he's using data - ANY internet use will do this on his phone. There's no such thing as a chat app that doesn't use wifi or data. |

That was a bit condescending. Not everyone understands how data works. |

This is probably the info i was wanting. I did suspect this but was hoping something was completely free.
Might go look for something else instead, like a way to use apps over phone internet without paying for it at all. That probably exists. |

One man's condescending is another man's just telling it how it is after a couple of dozen lists explaining the same thing. |

"You can video talk on facebook messenger . I discovered the other day. That doesnt cost anything either."
Thanks. I just googled and facebook says:
"Some features of the app aren't covered or discounted. If you're connected to Facebook with one of these carriers at a free or discounted rate, you'll see a warning when you try to use these features letting you know what you're about to do may be subject to standard data charges. If you use Messenger to send text messages, standard texting rates apply."
I'll now go find out which carries are free. |

That just means that any usage comes out of your data allowance, not as an extra charge. In the same way as a lot of carriers charge extra for sending MMS, rather than SMS (Vodafone changed their policy recently and MMS messages are now part of your data allowance, rather than charged separately) |
