Much better to be given time off in lieu of religious holidays that don't fall in the expensive seasons.

It hasn't been a bank holiday since 1971. Whit Monday used to be a bank holiday in the United Kingdom. However, the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971, moved this bank holiday to the last Monday in May.

Oddly some of the banks are even open. You'd be gutted if you went into banking only for the extra holidays, then found you had to work!

You can't try to tell me that it's just a 'coincidence' that every now and then they fall on the same day.

God truly does move in a mysterious way

"I mean, they *say* 'Late Spring', but we know it's Whit Monday really, right?

Mr ddc"

Bank holidays came about because they were traditionally the days that all banks closed, so were put into law across the country.

1st Jan, May day, spring bank, August, and boxing day have nothing to do with religion, good Friday and Easter Monday do, as does Christmas day, although that was originally a pagan celebration.

Next you'll be trying to convince us that just by changing the spelling, holy-days were never religious....

Maybe, to even things up, every religion should get to pick their own official bank holiday.

Obviously the first Monday in May works for Star Wars fans already...

Be fine with me. Let me choose my own holiday rather than fotce it on me for religious ceremonies that I have zero interest in celebrating

I know of a company that always gave an extra days holiday to every employee on their birthday, (or the Friday before if it landed on a weekend), with the usual proviso they brought cakes in on the day beforehand.

Being self-employed, it used to be a day when you could catch up on your work, knowing the phone won't ring.

Now it just means 'a day you don't feel quite so guilty being in the forums'

Atheists should get more bank holidays as their tax money is funding religious establishments.

Gay people should get a tax refund, as religious buildings arent open to same sex marriage - or non taxable benefits churches etv get should be reduced by 10%.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

A friend works for a company where all the Jewish people get those holidays too. I don't know what they do for other religions but when the holy-days align she can have a run of four day weeks.

Mr DDC, get your May pole out and have a dance.

Do you know how hard it is to find enough virgins in Chesterfield to dance around a maypole?

I'm tempted to mock something up using ribbons and Lego mini-figures...

Er, no actually.

As an atheist I don't celebrate it personally.

That said, I do try to give my kids a 'normal' christmas experience as I don't think it would be fair for them to miss out - although they are very understanding on my views on it, which is pretty impressive as they are only 9 & 7.

But you have to titter at the oxymoron of a non-religious 'holy'-day

If you had asked this question 200 years ago the answer would be different. Now we don't need religion to answer first school level questions on how everything works.religion is redundant to people with a logical mind.

So yeah atheists can have bank holidays off work.

Praise the lord
