ladies who dye their hair bright red. advice please.

A couple of weeks ago my daughter helped me dye some of my hair bright red ,which I.love but we could only get semi permanent and.now the colour has changed in places and I really want a permanent dye but I can't find a red bright enough can anyone help .....hairdressers is not an option .

They have permanent colours too in the slightly bigger boxes to the semis...add a do all the brights in the range if this helps...if u want it to stay brighter longer put the neat colour on for five minutes before u mix it with the developer...works for me I only colour mine once every 5 months |

Did you use a brush to put it on? That would help it not become patchy.
I think most of the bright colours are semi-permanent. Superdrug do some good ones, really red but not as bright, they are permanent. Or you could use a colour conditioner that's red? Left a link to their red hair products.

Pre-pigmenting it may also help with the colour staying. This is using the semi then putting the permanent on top of it (before washing out the semi!) also ensure you use shampoo and conditioner for coloured hair. Red is the worst culprit for fading in any case though i'm afraid. Signed happy to help hairdresser. X |

Yep Live XXL range is probably your best bet, they do an extra range called live colour luminance which is specifically for dark hair and there's a couple of fairly vibrant red shades in that, it's the only way I managed to get light purple hair straight away from natural dark brown hair. So they may take even better on your hair |

Your best best is going to Sally's and paying out bit extra for a bright red dye and peroxide and mixing it up yourself and applying it (or get someone to do it for you) getting the coverage on long hair is very important as you don't want banding. |

If you do the semi underneath as opposed to on top you might find a better result. See above re pre-pigmenting. x |

Sorry, but I have to agree. I've been disappointed in every permanent dye that is supposed to be bright red. I have resigned myself to going bright red when I go out or for a meet, and letting it fade pink in between. The pink is quite nice anyway.
I use Directions in Pillar Box red or Poppy red.

When I was doing mine it stayed bright for a week.. Dying pillowcases, towels, anything when it was wet!
After that the ends would fade which I liked the colour of but it didn't match my roots!
I was having to do it with a permanent one then redo every 3 weeks minimum! |

The colour I use is a permanent one, but i have it done professionally, even with permanent colour, I still regularly use crazy colour or a red semi inbetween having the permanent one done to keep it vibrant. |

Mrs JFL both dyes get hair red and is an analytical chemist...The reason that red's don't hold well is apparently something to do with the size of the molecules and covalent bonding!
It's the same reason that the plastics on red cars often fade badly, apparently. |

Tips to make semi permanent last longer:
Use shampoo only before dyin and put the colour on dry hair.
Leave on as long as possible (ignore times given!) and rinse with cool water.
Still fades but not quite as fast. |
