"Yes, massive majority! 1,201,607 votes to 734,300. That’s 62.1% yes to 37.9% no. " A pretty resounding result!

"How will that result affect the bakery if they wish too appeal against the decision made against them the other day . " The Bakery was in Northern Ireland, UK, Belfast - I believe and was due to our equality laws banning discrimination. Northern Ireland doesn't have marriage for gay people at present, so I wonder whether the ROI vote, and the fact they're going to be out of step with Ireland and the rest of us in Britain, will get it pushed forwards there.

"A shame. A lot of gay guys I know say that civil partneships are enough and a marriage should be between a man and woman. But guess this is the way of the world these days and its nothing to do with equality" The thing is, the UK civil partnerships weren't equal to marriage, they were similar - so it was having a second best legal confirmation of your partnership. Whilst some would be ok with that- you say your friends prefer that - then there are others who want a full match to a marriage. I think civil partnerships are still available for gay men and women, should they want them though.

"What is the advantage of a marriage?" Mostly tax / inheritance and child care rights really marriage is mostly important when you are no longer together for one reason or another

"I guess at some point in the future, the fact that gay people couldn't marry in these olden times, will be like us not appreciating how women weren't allowed to vote and it will seem like primitive thinking." You do realise men only got the vote 8 years prior right..?

"I just don't get why there is a need to vote on this?! Surely it should just be a standard thing That they can marry if they want to? Everyone else can. I'm obviously missing something" It's to do with the law. You have to have a vote to change the law, unless it's something those in power really want (in that case they just change it lol).

" What is the advantage of a marriage?" Having the ability to marry allows you to have full equality, whatever the gender of your partner, rather than a civil partnership which has less rights and benefits, in England for example. I'm single and don't know the full differences, as done neither. The good thing is that it sends a clear message that all gay men and women are equal to straight people. The Irish constitution or law required this change to be voted upon, so makes it the world's first country to vote for it.

It was close in old rural catholic Ireland where you still can't kiss a girl before marriage. But shur they'll all be gone soon

All entirely separate entities. People love the word equality, it allows them to absolve themselves of any real thought. They love it until money is mentioned, in that instance, one cannot have equality! Just shows how fickle people can be.

So whats next for 'equality'?" Point of marriage is for two people in love to commit to each other for the rest of their lives. Traditionaly in the eyes of God now in the eyes of the law. It's not necessary to get married but some people wish to do so. Today in Ireland they have reached a landmark where the people in love now don't have to be the opposite sex. That is to be applauded. As to whats next for equality. Something that's not equal i guess. I think all that's straight forward but maybe it's just me.

The only difference being that a marriage has a paper record whereas a civil partnership has only an electronic record. There was also a slight difference in law if the union wanted to solemnified my a religious organisation. I personally feel that, under the law in the UK, equality of treatment was achieved by civil partnerships (not sure if they have those in Irish Republic). Not sure this is really the great move forward to a tolerant, liberal society that everyone seems to be saying. After all tolerance is not about getting everyone to say what you're doing is right but about letting everyone do what they believe to be right.

"A shame. A lot of gay guys I know say that civil partneships are enough and a marriage should be between a man and woman. But guess this is the way of the world these days and its nothing to do with equality The thing is, the UK civil partnerships weren't equal to marriage, they were similar - so it was having a second best legal confirmation of your partnership. Whilst some would be ok with that- you say your friends prefer that - then there are others who want a full match to a marriage. I think civil partnerships are still available for gay men and women, should they want them though. What is the advantage of a marriage?" You can day "these are my wedding pictures from the happiest day of my life, the day I've been dreaming about for years where I married the man I loved" Not "these are the pictures from my civil partnership where I was begrudgingly granted legal recognition of my relationship with my same sex partner"

"The bible dont agree with it and its a shame old traditions will brake up cos of voters. " Yet you have stated meeting married women behind their husband's back is what you like in the past. If you loved someone and they returned that love wouldn't it be unfair for you not to be able to do what the vast majority do just because you don't fit the traditional model? No rights have been taken away from anyone else yet people seem to think that progress and achieving any sort of equality is a bad thing. Without that same level of change in attitudes we'd all be being stoned right now. We engage in activities that most people find outside the norm. And just because you might keep it secret from your nearest and dearest and don't want a social sanction for it doesn't mean it isn't happening. If found out I hope you're all happy to be judged and treated differently, even though you're not breaking the law. Equality for me but not for you is a concept I just don't understand.

"Im not an expert on marriage, partnerships or law, but one key difference from the start is pension rights, where civils have had less favourable conditions than if married. In the UK the same rules now apply for same sex marriage as applied for CP.

Then it was obvious we needed to go the extra mile. Well done Ireland. (Sorry if I'm a little late to the debate - I assumed this thread was simply going to be a long list of people saying 'well done' ) Mr ddc But isn't compromise the key to tolerance? Ones we abandon compromise are we not also abandoning tolerance?" But when people try to use semantics to use that compromise to discriminate, the compromise obviously isn't fit for purpose. CPs were meant to be indistinguishable, yet it turned out it wasn't.

"I'm not opposed to same sex marriage. After all I've been having the same sex with Mrs P for twenty years now. " About time we had an injection of humour into this thread.

Sadly I don't think same sex marriage will stop those determined to discriminate on grounds of sexual orientation from doing so.

"Why does there have to be an advantage to marriage? The fact is the gay community were excluded from choosing marriage over civil partnerships and now they aren't. If civil partnerships are still available and people are happy with those they can have them but if they want a marriage they can have that too now if they wish. How does this decision impact on anyone other than the couple that wish to get married? It impacts on every one who is married and previously believed that marriage was a union between a man and woman. It fundamentally changes the very nature of marriage. How does it? Does it make you believe in your marriage less? Does it alter the love you have for your spouse? Does it invalidate your marriage certificate? I really cannot see how it impacts anything. Firstly this is not about me or any marriage I may have or have had. But to answer your point. If you change the meaning of the word marriage from being a union between a man and a woman to being a union between any two people then you have fundamentally changed what marriage actually is in the eyes of many people. If that is not actually the case then why is actually having same sex marriage seen as such a massive step forward by those who support it. Let me be absolutely clear. I'm not opposed to same sex marriage but I feel legally, in the UK this was achieved in the UK by CP. I have a slight dislike of the change in the meaning of the word marriage from being a union between a man and a woman to being a union between any two people (it feels a bit Orwellian to me) but not enough to actually oppose it. Nope, still not getting it. The main word in you definition of the word marriage is union....between whom is irrelevant. It seems very discriminatory to say that only a man and a woman can have a union, gay people must only have a partnership. I'm not intelligent enough to get the Orwell reference, seen it a few times on here. " I always considered CP to be a union, maybe if it had been called a Civil Union that would have solved the problem?

" I always considered CP to be a union, maybe if it had been called a Civil Union that would have solved the problem?" The point here, for this thread about Ireland and their referendum, is that they didn't have the same right under Civil Partnership. The rights were described as "similar but not equal to those of civil marriage". Here's an extract from the Wiki entry: Civil partners are not allowed to adopt children jointly, as married couples are, though one civil partner may adopt singly. Also, civil partners cannot have joint guardianship over any children they raise together. The act provides for the succession of property, pension entitlements, domestic violence, and maintenance in the event of a breakdown of a relationship. The act does not make any provision for tax entitlements and allowances nor does it grant any social welfare benefits to civil partners. These issues are to be dealt with in two separate bills. The act makes provision for recognition of foreign relationships in Ireland as civil partnerships. The act does not deal with residency of same-sex couples that wish to become civil partnered in Ireland.

Not being familiar with Irish law on CP I won't argue with you on it. Also I'm not totally happy myself with the stance I might be conveying on this thread.

"But what is the reason for marriage and why was it invented? I'm glad the old religious ways are being eroded in the west, and that an ancient ceremony is being redefined Now what else can we tear down and rebuild If you change something doesn't it become something else? What is the point of wanting marriage if you want to change the rules I'm failing to see the point you are trying to make..do you actually resent the gays getting married now?is it something only a man and a woman can do? nothing stays the same, all things change, and the old christian ways are on their way out..i see it as a good thing. So taken to the conclusion lets change marriage then and put something else in its place. What shall we call it? Why change the word?I'm no linguist.not even sure how to create a new word,an easier option is to change its definition somewhat to include a few more groups.which is what's happening.job done.progress.. Not everyone will like it..oh well. The two hetro Catholics getting married tomorrow cause they love each other, and want to fuck legally will realise that nothing has changed for them when they sign the dotted line. I'm no linguist either and I didn't mean create a new word. And how can you change the definition of something? Things are what they are by definition. And if you are saying that marriage has now changed then surely they have defeated the object" Its quite easy to change the definition of things. As has been done with marriage..it no longer means the union of a man,and a woman.Dictionaries around the world will soon change the meaning of the word in their next addition.then it'll be official as you can get,as definitive as you can till it gets changed again.

Or been changed to suit anybody? Case closed

"the meaning of marriage must surely have always been, as with any similar 'institution',or tenet, constantly fluid over the centuries....originally it was more to do with division of property; in other countries you can legally have more than one spouse, generations ago women were considered, as sadly in some places ,still are, as property.....and it was only relatively recently that in the UK it became a crime to rape your wife.....none of these changes have destroyed the concept of marriage ..like any laws/customs,they will constantly change.....if you do not want a gay/straight marriage, well luckily, thats up to you....you don't have to have one! dont see why sniping at people who do is necessary!" I'm not sure that pointing out why some people object and that to try and changing the meaning of the word marriage is not actually changing what marriage is can be classed as snipping. I personally am not opposed to same sex marriage but I also don't believe that we achieve a tolerant society by insisting that everyone agrees that what anyone does is right. Tolerance is not about making everyone agree that everything is right but about allowing people to do what they think is right even if you don't.
