Why does it do that?
Jump to: Newest in thread
There are few things that grind my gears on the forums anymore but one thing that guarantees me wearing enamel away and adding to my wrinkles is women being referred to as females.
Hang on, I know we are the female of the species, don't get your panties in a wad but it's the 'looking for a female tonight' or 'female wanted to suck my cock'. Female what? Elephant, lizard, ear worm?

Those poor single males (or guys, or blokes, or whatever). Should they put girl? Or lady? Or woman? Or chick? Or distaff member? The choices are frightening (Offensive? Sexist? Which one runs the best opportunity of getting them laid?), so they end up putting female since it seems innocuous enough. Besides, if they didn't specify a sex they might end up catching the ghey if a guy responds.
Either that or they are a fan of Friday Night Dinners.

I forgot about the Ghey. It's highly infectious with no cure you know. |

That it is - see numerous threads about straight men sending winks to other straight men.
I don't like women being referred to as girls or ladies. One is infantalising and the other makes us sound "other" for want a better phrase.
Female is probably easiest as the other problem with calling us women is that a fair few don't seem to know if they want a woman or many women.

female sounds so clinical and I'm not keen but "girl" sends me into apoplexy and that's not good for a woman on the edge |

I agree entirely with the OP referring to vagina wielding adults as "females" is really out of order. Most terms for vagina weilding adults seem offensive to one person or another. Perhaps we can all agree on a number instead? |

Polite and formal/a person of good social standing. It doesn't fit all the uses for me and we (the collective) rarely refer to men as gentlemen.

I always assume they're talking metaphorically rather than using the possessive.
It comes from working on construction sites, language there tends to be a little less refined

I think language and how we use it has power. It may seem woods and trees to you, and I can see that, but I notice when gender terms are used to belittle or to be derogatory. I know I piss against the wind on here with this little tic of mine.

I used to think a lady didn't work, but a woman did. That they were equivalent to gentleman and man.
I was also brought up that it is always better to err by calling a woman a lady. But that is no longer the case, and speaking to any er.....feminine person, is like walking in a minefield. One with ever-changing boundaries. |

True, but whilst there are clearly derogatory terms, I can't see how female, lady or woman could be belittling or derogatory or insulting, yet some clearly are offended by them.
I'm not being deliberately obtuse, I just don't understand why other battles aren't more important. |

They all link to language. NLP works for a reason.
Anyhoo, enough from me on this today. I know I am a lone voice on this on these 'ere boards and I'm too good a mood to have it spoiled with the hate mail that comes when I'm even slightly feminist.
