I've decided next weekend project is going to be painting a different room (my first one was a massive success). However I'd really appreciate your help and advice.
Currently in said room there is black wallpaper with pink shit all over it, I want to paint the room mustard yellow and preferably over the wallpaper. Which paint do I use?
Swear to god the last people must of been some absolute odd balls, baby blue room which is now teal and pink and black wallpaper which will be mustard!
Off to work, thanks in advance, it's a loft conversion last roo only took 1 tub which was 10 pound odd from b and q. |

I think what I'm trying to ask is, am I looking at more coats than 1 for yellow over black and will I need emulsion or mat, the wallpaper is rigid so would matt be better? |

Do the first coat in the cheapest white or magnolia you can get. Then check an inconspicuous part of the wall to see if the second colour coat covers it. If not then either another coat of white or white that has been watered down a bit. |

Emulsion comes in Matt,Silk or eggshell. Silk shows bumps,I would go with matt emulsion. |

I'm starting my front room tomorrow and just been to b and q today.. Then do a paint that's one coat that will paint over anything.. But im sure you would be able to paint with a base coat and then your chosen shade? .. I always swear I'll nece paint again when I've done one room but now I'm doing the biggest project of all haha.! Good luck anyway |

You'll deffo need at least one, prob 2, coats of white or magnolia first to do a colour change on back. I'd prob go with 2 coats of cheap wilko magnolia.
Whether you go for mat or silk emulsion as a top coat is up to you. I prefer silk as you can wipe any scuff marks off more easily.
You might find that when you put paint on the wallpaper, it bubbles up a bit, but it will usually shrink back tight when it dries. If not, slit any bubbles with a stanley knife and get some paste in - then let it dry before painting again. |

Painting over wallpaper is always risky due to the finish, Example if the pink shit as you put it, has a shiny finish the paint may not take. Or if it's a paper designed to repel water or moisture the paint won't take.
Also the moisture in the paint will probably cause the paper to bubble.
Remove paper if possible.
If not a mist coat first allow to dry then build up coats allowing to dry properly between coats.
But honestly can't see it looking very good. |

I'm just decorating some of ma flat in preparation for the visit of a sexy forumite. 
Personally I would strip the paper off first to determine what the plasterwork is like underneath. Filler & sand down any dodgy bits. If it's been painted before, one coat should do the trick, if not you'll need to give it a coat of primer/sealant first. |

as a painter I say two coats maggi two in your chosen colour more if you miss bits (snagging)..
matt is better if you think your going to do lots of snagging after.. with silk you have to repaint the hole wall or shading will appear

Dip your finger in a glass of water and press it to the paper on the black bits and the pink bits. If it sinks in, you should be ok to paint over it, but probably 2 or 3 coats to cover the black. If on the water test, it doesn't sink in, emulsion won't cling to it properly and it'll flake off. |
