We are off to Turkey in the summer for the first time. Just wondering if it is better to change our money here or take sterling and change it there. The travel agents say take Lira but quite a few forums seem to say you get a better deal in Turkey and most places actually take Sterling. xx |

We took a mixture of Sterling, Euros and Lira. So long as your mental arithmetic is quite good, having the flexibility makes haggling quite fruitful.

Depends where you're going and staying. Myself and my exgf went two years back under my parents name with their club.
We went to a self catering apartment site, so we had lira for onsite restaurants and trips, as well as getting the bus and for our groceries. Just easier to pay in lira rather than convert.
Take some sterling as they are good for haggling Also if you find a local bar and go regularly tipping a quid or two puts you in their good books. My gf and I had way too much one night and they gave us bread and lamb to soak it up free cause they didn't want good customers walking around d*unk.
Euro are also good if you are going to bigger cities. ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

I haven't been to turkey for a few years so it may have changed.... Each time I have been I've taken mainly sterling and just a very small amount of lira. The exchange rate over there is so much more favourable than here so I changed money as and when I needed to. Also, most traders preferred sterling anyway.
As you're going all inclusive, you won't need much anyway so I wouldn't worry too much, the exchange rate won't affect you if you're only spending a small amount |

Most of the traders over there seem to prefer sterling, plus it'll be easier for you to work out value for money and haggle accordingly.
I usually found exchange rates better over there so I'd say just change it up as you go.

And would this travel agent you are with perhaps sell Lira to you? IF theres extra money in it for them they'd tell their customers anything. Same with the travel agents at the bottom of my street, far better rates going to M&S. |

Of coarse they are doc lol. It does my head in the fact that you lose so much money if you bring currency back which is why we are checking its ok to take sterling (along with a small amount of Lira). |

If your going to Lara beach don't bother to leave your resort, it's really inflated compared to the rest of Turkey. If your going to one of the main resorts like marmaris change your money their just watch them they sometimes make mistakes in their favour |

"We are going all inclusive so we will only need money for buying a few bits to bring home."
If that's the case I'd just take about 1/3 lira, 2/3 sterling.
Lira for any taxis or trips off the resort, sterling for your gifts if you are buying them from a market or shop. You'll be able to haggle better with sterling. ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

Take an empty suitcase and a mix of lira/sterling- they're happy with either when selling you designer copies. Some of the watches are excellent and don't forget to try the Paragliding (go at sunset for the best view, just dress up warm).
The last bar on the high street (white on on the left, upstairs) does great food with an awesome view.
Don't bother with the market trip they advertise on Tuesdays and Saturdays- the knock off gear is crap, not much cheaper and you get hassled all the way round |

I went last year, forth time to the resort, take a bit of sterling and the hsbc cash point on the strip gives out sterling, at the top of the strip is a bag shop opposite a supermarket, he gives the best exchange rate in resort!!! |

"On a slightly different topic can you sunbath topless on the beaches in turkey. Mrs J loves to get her boobs brown on her holidays. xxx"
Sunbathing topless is something you have to decide for yourself, make an assessment of the beach your at and decide for yourself, bear in mind that Turkey is a Muslim Country which you have to respect. Currency- Euro or Pounds, and have a nice time, ![](/icons/s/razz.gif) |

Iv just came home from Turkey (Marmaris) yesterday.
I took TL and English.
They accept anything over there.
There were others sun bathing topless on the beach so, I went topless too. I didn't around the pool though. |

I had to get my visa at my airport, on line as I wasn't told about them, as were a few other people caught out too.
Be careful doing it online, there a lot of fake sites.
Have a lovely time ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

We travel regularly to visit Mrs Cantilevered's family in Istanbul and often to coastal resorts. We use a prepaid global currency Visa card for everything other than petty cash requirements, for which we use Turkish Lira. |
