is it me, or do you think this guy has had something unearthed in a background check? I just can't believe he didn't expect a certain level of attention when he announced he wanted to run for labour leader...

Should it matter, surely the only thing people should consider is if he is qualified for the job. I personally don't think so, but that has nothing to do with his personal life, which is no one's business but his own.

I'd never heard of him, prior to this week. I like to think that I've a reasonable level of knowledge, but cripes, the names of people coming forward are mostly total mysteries to me.

I can't begin to imagine the microscopic approach to your every word, every yawn, every movement of your eyes in case they are caught on camera as rolling your eye, and so on...

and the constant bitching in the press & on line.

they deserve every penny they get

good on him for standing down

I thought after Paddy Pants-down, Bonking Boris, Slugger/Shagger Prescott and all the Duck-houses, there was very little a politician could do that was unforgivable.

He must have called someone a pleb!

I don't understand how he didn't think he would be put under the microscope given that he is already an MP

So, if he was a paedo, or had links with terrorists, that would be ok?.

Sorry, but if you put yourself forward for public office, then you should expect public scrutiny.

He would have known this as an MP.

Which leads me to suspect that something unsavoury in his private life has been unearthed and he's standing down because of it.

No, I'm all in favour of paedo's and terrorists making the important decisions in the country, along with a couple of alcoholics, a smattering of drug addicts, a couple of fraudsters and a murderer or 2. Were Umanna any of these he would be resigning and facing crimial investigation. But is it in the public interest if, for example, he enjoys being strapped to a wall and spanked? Or that he enjoys bi mmf fun? Or maybe that he once he came home d*unk after a stag night in Butlins? Scrutiny is one thing, right to privacy is another.

This has been the discussion all day at work, that and two 17 yr old girls managing to escape the most feared terrorist organisation in the world cross a dessert and a boarder , unaided and phone their old man , Almost as unbelievable as Teresa May thinking about not letting them back into the country.

if they are considered by the authorities of breaking the law, it is investigated and they are charged... yeah, I have a right to know if they are paid for by public money....

That said, I'm not convinced this is the reason he's said he's not standing for leadership as much as the fact he probably wouldn't win, and even if he did he'd be out in 5 years.

.. Ok I've had a thought , because this is fishy as a fishy thing weeks before he announced he'd have had advisors planning his bid , telling him what to expect how they are going to sell him and such. , with the hooha; farage and the falling out with the donator , is it at all believable that . After he announced , he was approached by a sponsor with a really big brown envelope saying how he; the sponsor ,had a better man for the job? Stand down and I'll make it worth your while?

I think what he wasn't expecting was the intrusion of his extended family.

Maybe one of them has a secret that they don't want exposed.

After the disgusting hatchet job on Miliband's dead dad, I can only imagine how his family must be feeling, even though they're not standing to be leader.

If this guy has crumbled within a week under the pressure of just running for the job.

What would have he been like should he have actually GOT the job, where the pressure would have been a lot worse.

So was it really a great loss? ..

No scrap that . It was Friday night an' at about 11:15 after a few beers and an evening of your mates bigging you up . It seemed like a brilliant idea!

"Yeahhh I could do that. piece of piss!"

Made the call to the press office (they'd had a drink too)

Next morning

"Shit"

He's still a young man and a relatively new face...

It may be as Betrand said: The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.

Or he's crap.

Time will tell...

Either way, I have no interest in his personal endeavours, unless they impact/impair his ability to do his job, or would genuinely dent his credibility.

It could also be the case that the influential members of the party asked him to step down as he could eat into the votes of a preferred candidate...were there a head to head.

Their seedy or hidden secrets are known anyway, if they have them and they know it.

My guess is that he'll let someone else fall on their sword first, then step in, once hard work is done and he can optimize his potential.

Signing up helped to get his profile known by those of us with no clue.

that's what they say, but there are more skeletons in this fella's closet than in Highgate cemetery. Lots of stories about dodgy financial, tax stuff early on in his career. The press could be deflected then but not if he's running for leader
