Thing is a few months ago a gang of squirrels moved into the tree at the end of the garden.
To cut a long story short they been nothing put trouble causing my neighbours and me constant grief.
The ringleader is a vicious little thug that's made our gardens practically a no go area, smashing pots, attacking neighbours pug ect.
The police haven't been much help tbh and said to keep a diary and inform the environmental agency which I have, but they say I should talk to my landlord.
Anyway had enough of them now and will pay for the ammo/time if someone would come around and shoot the ringleader and then the rest might take the hint and move.
Inbox me if you have a gun in the Brighton area.
Thanks guys. x |

Do you need a gun? I've seen the smaller of my two cats go for a squirrel once, and have never seen any round mine ever again (although arguably she's more of a thug than the squirrels themselves probably are). |

I quite like them in my garden they don't do much harm at all. I have an air rifle that I was going to use on a magpie that was devastating the birds nests in the hedge line on our boundary but just didn't have the heart to shoot it. I'm a mixed up meat eater that's for sure. |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)
No license but have used a few guns, on a shoot to kill basis.
I imagine it's a dodgy situation shooting in a built up area, as stray bullets could cause damage or injury to others and property.
Look at traps or humane trapping.
Dislike grey squirrels and wish we had none. |

There's even a trap on amazon that can be sent gift wrapped. You add bait for a few days, before fully setting the trap to capture. Maize is a good feed - unless lots of birds are around.
Once caught, its illegal to release them in the wild. |

Yeah I did think of poison but worried about the other wildlife.
Though the ringleaders practically driven even the birds away now.
Seen the little shit grab a starling on the bird feeder by its wing and hit the poor thing.
He's out of order now and needs stopping. |

You should be able to trap and relocate them.
Trouble is more will simply follow.

"You called the police about squirrels?"
i thought that too lol
there are a number of pet control companies that use guns to control populations of rabbits etc so i am sure squirrel would be the same although there may be restrictions in using them in residential areas.
poison may be an option but i watched a programme the other day where some rats have mutated into being resistant to poison, not sure if squirrels have done the same or not? |

I take it were talking about your average grey squirrel. If it's the red squirrel they are a protected species.
You could always check online for a local pest remover. |

Well next day the local CPO came out and it was him that told me to take photographic and video evidence for the environment agency which I did.
Plus my neighbour needed a ref number for his insurance for the greenhouse they trashed. |

I would get yourself a Squirrel trap, which would be easier than trying to shoot them. I bought a fenn box (ebay I think) baited with peanut butter, that sorted the critters out! |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)
Ah, if you'd been closer I would have brought the air rifle round and taken care of them for you.
Hate grey squirrels. Nothing but rats with bushy tails.
Best advice is set some strong rat traps baited with peanut butter. That'll sort them and it will be a whole lot cheaper than getting a pest controller in. |

I bet they had a right old laugh at your expense down the station. As for a reference number, all your neighbour had to do was take some pictures and call his insurance company.

I must be in a parallel universe to you. You called the police because some wildlife hurt your garden.
At what point did you not consider that the police are busy with crimes committed by humans, bearing in mind that a squirrel is just doing what it does?

The only good grey squirrel is a dead one..
Rat traps are ok but you stand the chance of catching a few hungry birds as well...
A proper squirrel trap is best but you have to be careful how you despatch them now as they have to be killed humanely.
It's illegal to release or relocate a grey squirrel once caught, unless you have the appropriate license.. |

As has been already said, you can trap but they must be dispatched humanely. If you're in a built up area you may get into trouble with any sort of gun.
Try and find a local falconer. Try The British Falconers Club - they should be able to put you in contact with someone locally who does pest control. In the States squirrel hunting is a popular sport though it's not so common here (squirrels have a viciously nasty bite!)but there are definitely pest control falconers who would deal with them for you.

I don't condone killing of animals but the traps I mentioned earlier were £10~15. They'd be baited and open for a few days and then set to trap, once they're familiar with using them. The traps don't kill, someone would have to do that, once they're in custody.
Beware of poisoning as birds with feeding babies could pick up the bait. |

You called the police because apparently squirrels caused criminal damage, yet you're asking for someone to come and use a gun in a built up area (which is illegal by the way)?
I fail to understand how squirrels can cause criminal damage to anything. Damage, yes but there's nothing criminal about it.
My suggestion is that you man up or move house! |

"Thing is a few months ago a gang of squirrels moved into the tree at the end of the garden.
Thanks guys. x"

Call the airforce in and bomb it , |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)
As someone who shoots/hunts.
You can use an air rifle in your garden. However it is a serious offence if the pellet goes outside your boundary. So no shooting at squirrels sitting on the fence.
Make sure that you have a solid back stop behind your target...
Catapults follow the same guide lines...
It is illegal to hunt live prey in the UK with a bow/crossbow...
The fishing line with hooks may work but will get you into trouble for animal cruelty...
Traps must be checked at least once every 24 hours.
Also in this day and age you have dispose of any remains in an approved manner...
Ps. I really hope the bit about calling the police was a joke... |

Are we still operating under the pretence of it being a "squirrel" being a nuisance, you need big Archie, he's a local fixer, he strangled two people for a quid once, it was in the paper, the headline said "big Archie chokes 2 for a pound"
That was a hard fought gag |

Me. Nothing cute about the Grey Squirrel. Vermin brought over from the States years ago that has decimated our native Red Squirrel population.
I shoot them all year round and have totalled over 700 in the last 5 years alone. |

"what a country of cruel fuckwits.shooting grey squirrels wont bring the red ones back.they were outcompeted.survival of the fittest."
The greys are a foreign species introduced when escaped from a private zoo.
In the squirrel world they are the immigrants taking the territory and the food etc.
Good job red squirrels don't have the BNP or UKIP.
OP.....I have an air rifle...but too far from you....sorry. |

Red squirrels can recolonise, subject to favorable habitat. I'd love to see the alien invaders removed, to give our dwindling numbers of reds a chance.
Thankfully don't get many greys on my patch
But get tons of robbing vermin magpies. |

Seen some stuff but no one unless you have license to hold a gun can legally use one and even then strict conditions apply.
Fact some are conding killing animals because they are just being animals beats me.

Out competed? Survival of the fittest? Shut up.
The Greys carry a pox virus that our native Reds catch and die from. The Greys are hated that much, that back up where I'm from, (Cumbria) they have paid Rangers that go out and shoot and trap them en masse.
Hope they wipe the critters out. |

Learn the law before posting. You only need a license for FAC rifles/air rifles and shotguns. Lower powered air rifles and air pistols can be legally owned without a license. |

Totally wrong.
Anyone over the age of 18 can own an air rifle or pistol without a license. Providing the rifle has a muzzle energy below 12ftlbs and the pistol below 8ftlbs. Above that a FAC is required. Shooting vermin is also legal.
Do try a research things before posting rubbish. |

Shotgun licenses are pretty easy to obtain. Two of my kids have had them since aged 12. A full fire arms certificate is much trickier. |

Handgun?....NO, they're not legal to own privately. Do you mean air pistol?
It's legal to shoot an air pistol in your garden as long as the pellets don't leave the boundary of your garden. I would suggest an air rifle would be a more humane way of dispatching squirrels, they're more powerful and there's less chance of maiming. |

Personally I think it's pathetic that the police were called. An utter waste of time and in my opinion the OP should be fined for wasting police time.
As for shooting animals, I generally only shoot what I intend to eat. I have no love for 'trophy' shooting of animals, I think it's abhorrent. |

Then thats a double barrel answer , what does the brocock shoot at , |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)
How's it a double barrel answer? The legal limit for air pistols is 6ft lbs. NO exception. They can not be put on FAC because that would then make them a Section 5 (prohibited) firearm. Brocock air pistols are still sub 6ft lbs, but, certain gangs were converting them to fire live .38 rounds as they use the air cartridge system. They were therefore made illegal and banned from sale. People who already owned them could apply to have them entered into FAC instead of having to hand them in.
Hence why some air pistols are on FAC. |

Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)
Brocock's basically used a round like a normal gun but filled with compressed air instead of gun powder.
When the law changed you could have your Brocock legally modified and registered on a FACEBOOK. It was a time limited offer. So couldn't be done now.
I have plenty of experience with guns and have been in contact with the local firearms issuing officer and a local club but just not followed it up with action yet.. |

You have to take part in three organised skirmish battles to qualify for your black gun licence so it's no real hardship to those who take it too seriously. |

The Brocock used a cartridge simular to a live round but using compressed air in the cartridge instead of gun powder. It uses a firing pin so it can be converted to use a powder filled round and the cartridges can be converted to use powder and reloaded.

My son has an airsoft license too. It basically allows him to have replica guns without the need for two-tone paint with an orange tip on the barrel.

Just to point out you don't have any kind of license at all for airsoft nor do you need one.
It's a "defence" the 3 skirmish in 3 months is just the ukara requirements to be on their data base. Which then allowed you to claim regular skirmisher as your defence.

Home made spud gun
Easy to make just a quick visit to B&Q for some plastic piping an ignitor from an old gass cooker and a can of hair spray |

" you only need this if you want to buy a realistic looking airsoft gun, you can buy a two tone either bright blue, yellow or orange and you don't need to be ukara registered |

Correct. Without the UKRA 'license' you're restricted to two-time guns. You can certainly paint them black (or any colour of your choosing) this however presents the slight problem of owning a replica firearm which, without the correct paperwork, could land you in a little bother with the boys in blue should you be seen out in public with it. |

"Home made spud gun

What you are describing is a different beast entirely.
Your describing a potato cannon.
Built correctly pretty deadly.
Use the wrong propellant and you could blow your hands off! |

"
When the law changed you could have your Brocock legally modified
Modified? In what way? They remained a simple air pistol.
The Brocock used a cartridge simular to a live round but using compressed air in the cartridge instead of gun powder. It uses a firing pin so it can be converted to use a powder filled round and the cartridges can be converted to use powder and reloaded.
Not sure how the guns were made legal..."
Didn't need an explanation as to what a Brocock was. Ive owned 3 of them. I'm was curious as to how they were "modified" when the laws regarding them changed. |
