Oh dear, there maybe somebody on here that's a bit disappointed to hear that his nemesis France is more productive than Britain in fact the average French worker has done the same work as a British worker by Thursday and therefore can rest and eat cheese and wine all day Friday!

I'm shocked, round up the usual suspects

Maybe French workers don't spend half their time on 'Le Fab'...?

Doesn't surprise me at all .

We spend far too much time moaning and complaining about unfair this and unfair that .

Look at the amount of people protesting about the austerity measure yesterday .

The sense of entitlement amongst the British workforce is the issue , and statistics like the one you have highlighted might give us a wake up call . It's any wonder employers look elsewhere for hard working employees . The country would probably crumble without the immigrant workforce who seem to put their all into their job .

There is a lot to be said about allowing workers have wine at lunch like the French do and a lot more to be said about the quality of the food that the French also have for lunch.

I think I would work a lot better while being a little tipsy.

I must have some French in me then because I give myself a long weekend every week. I never work beyond Thursday.

But the uk has got less productive since immigration in 2002.

It's crazy we keep letting productive people in but productivity keeps falling.

Mm mm.... I wonder what they base productivity on ?

Care work is something it's difficult to put a figure on , yet it's one of the few ever increasing in demand .

Could zero hours be part of the issue ?

Who is going to put their all into a job when there's no incentive ?

A simple solution to this problem is let the workers have more of an input into how things are done.

Management in Britain is too much in love with itself, and with the idea of being in charge, their problem is in continuing the same tired old ways of doing things, I have heard management dismissing workers attempts to improve their productivity by telling them they aren't here to think, they are here to do as they are told.

The worst managers are those who think that they are the only ones who know how to run a company, they are usually there because they have brown nosed their way to the job, but the crap that got them the job wont keep them there, so they make mistakes costing jobs and the fool who promoted them covers up for them and blames the workers who aren't able to defend themselves.

Back in the days of British Leyland the sun newspaper ran an expose on the night shift, it was reported that the workers spent half the night sleeping on camp beds and watching portable TVs.

What was not reported was that there were no managers in the plant, they only worked 9-5, they set production targets for the night shift and then gone home, in the morning they checked production and quality and were ignorant of what was going on. the workers had found a method of production which had doubled the output per hour and cut energy costs whilst still hitting their target.

The bosses answer to finding out what was happening was to sack all those concerned and went back to the old expensive way of producing the components. No wonder it went bust.

True Dukilad, management in the public sector is often shocking, which is generally why privatisation works. (I work in both)

Management and the unions now work together in the car industry for the good of all. Just think what we could achieve if all unions and management thought like this!

I don't pretend to grasp it all SB, but I did see this a few weeks ago:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/economics/11553774/Britains-productivity-crisis-beware-all-the-usual-simplistic-solutions.html

It seems to imply our productivity isn't something to worry over, but is more a result of all the lower productivity jobs we have created, and the way productivity is measured.

Having been involved in my consultancy role across a few FTSE companies looking at performance management programmes and measurement, that does not surprise me. Absence is the same.

I could also guess the cities in the UK with the lowest productivity/absence across multiple industries.

The same names appear at the bottom in each

I would be equally concerned about the sense of entitlement in the executive management in the both the public and private sector who demand bonuses and incentives without genuine increases in productivity and who use financial engineering to artificially increase profits or whose Kpis are not SMART.

That's why I didn't understand it. I have three separate jobs, in one, where I am on a zero-hours contract (with Labour local authority, natch) I know I am doing the same amount of work for less money, but since the councillors just used that saving to increase their allowances, rather than increase services, I don't even know whether I have personally led to an increase, decrease, or no overall change in total productivity!

In fact, the only thing I am sure of, is that productivity is a statistic, 63% of all statistics are made up, and even 87% of those are misused.

But you couldn't possibly drink a claret with your bierwurst on pumpernickel.

(Well, I suppose you could, what's the wurst that could happen)

(Sorry )

According to the ONS it's measured on one hour worked.

They set the uk to 100 then show which countries are less more productive per hour.

The us is top, they produce 31% more per hour than in the UK

Germany was second 28% more productive

France 27% better

Italy was 9% better even

In fact the only less productive country than the UK is Japan there 15% less productive than the uk

That was a shock

I've improved productivity at every company I have been involved with. How? Creating alignment between all stakeholders and providing proper incentives to do so. Simples

An observation that I read today explained that key issue is training and skills.

If a machine breaks down in a German factory the machine worker has skills to fix it it and will do so. A British machine worker has to wait until the expert arrives to fix it. Hence hours lost in productivity.

Doesn't explain services companies though, of which much of the UK is made up of.

Incidentally the UK is also one of the biggest users of social media...

According to Carney it's got nothing to do with immigration, I think he's wrong and having cheap plentiful labour means companies cut back on investment in efficiency!
