Anyone had this happen to them? I was dodging traffic this morning, running late for work...dodged a bus only to run straight into a car doing 30, came out of nowhere from behind the bus.
Yes I was a bit shaken and I'm still in shock. No broken bones but a very swollen and ugly elbow.
Lessons learned...only cross at the lights from now on. What was I thinking? |

It's a tough way to learn the lesson, but glad to hear you're still walking around.
Have had personal experience of a very young friend of ours who wasn't so lucky and lost his life.
Respect traffic; it will always do more damage to you than you'll do to it. |

"30mph and you got up?
The fuck. .. "
I thought I'd broken my arm as I heard a crack!
Honestly felt like my time was up. I saw the car coming, couldn't move out of the way and saw my life flash before me.
Immortal!

Glad you're not too badly hurt OP.
A few years ago a mate's missus was knocked down & killed by a car that had lost control, she was on the pavement. It was 6.30 am and she was going to fetch a paper from the village shop
Ironically it was near the pedestrian crossing outside the school where she was the lollipop lady...... |

He went to brake but swerved and hit a car after he'd hit me.
The doc did say he's amazed at my lack of serious injuries. Doesn't half shake you up though this. Never been so grateful to be walking the planet as this afternoon leaving the hospital. |

A few years ago, I was out with friends from work & my ex volunteered to come & pick us up. He'd dropped most off so it was just me & and another friend in the car.
I noticed a female jogging towards the road, she didn't stop & she went up on the windscreen of our car & fell back.
My ex stopped, was in shock, luckily there was a kebab van nearby with lots of people around. A taxi driver volunteered to move his car, my ex was too shocked to do anything. Ambulance & police called.
The girl had been playing chicken. Witnesses stated this & even she wanted the paramedics to tell my ex she knew it wasn't his fault.
It was a horrible, horrible experience so I have every sympathy for car drivers who hit people except for those who are under the influence. |

Glad to hear that will only cross at the lights in future. It is difficult for cars to see who might be crossing in front of a bus . I always exercise extreme caution when passing them just in case someone appears . |

I got hit by a car when I was fifteen. All my fault. Fractured my skull. Was off school for ages.
Can't remember a thing about it , just remember waking up on a trolly being whisked down a corridor with someone shining a light in my eye and my dad calling me a stupid bastard. |

I had one a few months ago, this dick came round a corner, mounted the kerb and ran over my foot with his back left tyre and I bounced of his rear quarter panel. Just glad I had good boots on. Just a little bruised.

Thanks... but I wouldn't be here rejoicing about still being alive if anyone else had been hurt. Wouldn't that be a tad harsh...
The other car he hit was parked on the side of the road. Eyewitnesses said he was going too fast. He actually blamed the bus driver. I shouldn't have 'jaywalked' and I know that. |

Sorry to hear if your misfortune today.
I'm very happy your injuries are minor.
You will feel shaken for a couple of days but you'll probably ache all over tomorrow!
Take it easy and look after yourself. Oh, and take regular analgesia. X |

When I lived in Germany the locals would only cross the road at a designated crossing point, pedestrian crossing etc... This was done for not only safety but also for the fear of getting a fine! We should adopt a similar system in this country.... what would you rather have? Losing out on a few quid or having a sore elbow..... or even worse!
I hope you get well soon, keep on taking the pain killers..... and if they don't work I will come and rub some cream on your chest

I agree. Pedestrians should take responsibility if they cause an accident through their studipity. Car drivers don't alway see people or can read minds.
I'm glad you're ok though and certainly wise to cross at the crossing next time. |

Any competent driver passing a bus should be aware that someone might jump out and adjust their speed accordingly . If driving past a bus I always slow down just in case .

I think when someone uses the phrase "dodging traffic" and "dodged a bus" it indicates that this bus was not a stationary one someone may expect a person to walk from behind but a moving bus that no driver would expect a pedestrian to have chosen to run in front of.
And she also stated he was going 30 so quite a typical speed for an urban setting. |

Cars always seem faster when they are hitting you and people at accident scenes always say cars are driving too fast! Also as she thought it acceptable to dodge through loads of traffic and then run out from behind a bus are we trusting her judgement about anything? I always drive slowly past busses and prepare to stop but in my experience people peep around a bus to see if they can cross not just launch themselves out into the flow of traffic......no matter how many times she says the car drivers are blaming each other she has admitted she was dodging traffic and ran into the road in front of the car......she caused the accident |

I once attempted to cross a road outside my University, at the crossing, but I was looking at the wrong green light, stepped out. Had a car hit me and I jumped back out of shock... no serious damage, just shock and an ugly bruise on my shin, luckily the driver had been slowing down to go into the University too!
She pulled over, jumped out and started apologising profusely.. I said that she shouldn't apologise, it was entirely my fault!
I don't know why I looked at the wrong lights... but lesson well an truly learnt for me too! |

Did you go to hospital to get checked out.? did they say anything about concussion ? If you still feeling dodgy maybe go back and get checked again. Did you get hit or knocked to the ground hit.
So technically you caused the accident and for him to hit someone else what have the police said ? will you be prosecuted now |

When I was at uni at lunch time about 100 people ok each side of the main crossing across Oxford Road in Manchester someone steps out (still red) so everyone on both sides just followed them cue loads of cars slamming on lots of horns blaring and one slightly epic dude who didn't even slow down but simply moved to straddle the white lines and shoot through the closing tide of people like Indiana Jones under a door. |

No she didn't. She said 30mph which is driving at the limit. She also said she walked out in front of the car. I doubt any car could of stopped unless it was crawling along. It was her fault and she's also admitted it was. |

The car drivers insurance will cover the damage, that is why we have it. Everyone has done what the OP has done at one time or another. Fortunately in the majority of times we have all got away with it.
Buses are a hazard that we should all be aware of. |

I'm glad you've learned your lesson here.
We've had a 7-8 year old blast out infront of our car on a scooter before from behind a transit van. We had NO way of seeing him.
Luckily we were only doing about 20mph at the time and managed to miss him. I don't think I ever could've got in a car again if we had been going the speed limit and had hit him...
Having grown up in London though, I'm amazed at how many supposedly intelligent adults will just walk out into moving traffic, and even worse, some look and STILL walk out in front of you. |

So in a case like this where the pedestrian admits it was their fault as they walked into the road, would it be his fault that he had to claim on his insurance or should he be able to claim compensation from the pedestrian?

Unfortunately, based on my own experiences, most of the cyclist vs vehicle accidents I've witnessed have been the cyclist's fault.
But then again, maybe a Londoner isn't the best person to ask. |

I'd guess he'd have to bring about civil action to try reclaim all costs as a pedestrian isn't an insurable item |

Let see you anticipate a person running in front of your car. If you think a driver an anticipate everything there would be no bloody accidents ever.
Can you even drive cause you clearly have no understanding of driving.

You appear to think my last comment was serious, which is odd. Also I have been driving a long time in countries all around the world in terrible driving conditions without accident thanks-including mini buses in the north of Norway in december. My point was that the driver appears to have been driving too fast for the conditions. In areas with parked cars and pedestrians it is usual to slow down and give the parked vehicles a wide berth to avoid such a situation. I know you cannot avoid every situation and no one can really sit in judgement as we werent there. I was merely adding some alternative points of view and some light hearted support for the OP. |

Why wouldn't I take it seriously? There was no indication you wanted it taken otherwise and now you seem to be back tracking. Also I'm just making light hearted sport of you support for the OP.
But she did admit fault and damaged 2 car because of it so she should pay damages. |

I am fully aware of the setting, and you have hardly shown my reasoning power, and i was in no way trying to undermine yours. I simply presented my point of view. And this pettiness is adding nothing of value to either this thread or anyone reading it so I would politely suggest we drop it out of respect for the OP and everyone else on here? |

I have licences to drive both buses and lorries and in addition I have completed an advanced driving test . Accidents are rarely the fault of one party unless you are hit in the rear . From the OPs versions of events , it would appear that the car driver was driving too fast in a congested area and as such failed to notice a developing hazard and consequently was unable to stop without hitting another vehicle . A bus in the vicinity should be sufficient warning , especially as pedestrians are likely to step out from either in front or behind them. As to the suggestion that the OP should be liable for damages , if I was the driver of a vehicle that hit a pedestrian , I would be booking additional driving lessons to improve my driving skills , not worrying about my insurance excess . |

It's not always the fault of the driver when they hit someone. And I should bloody well know. I was in the car when a d*unk female was playing chicken & ended up on the bonnet of his car, smashing the windscreen & ending up with broken bones & teeth. |

"I'm glad you've learned your lesson here.
Ride a bike you'll be amazed how many people do this with cars.
Look right out then pull out.
Unfortunately, based on my own experiences, most of the cyclist vs vehicle accidents I've witnessed have been the cyclist's fault.
But then again, maybe a Londoner isn't the best person to ask."
I was talking about motorbikes :p
Where more than 70% of accidents are right of way violations by other vehicles (someone pulling out or cutting across the biker) |

Im simply presenting mine which happens to disagree with yours and I can see you don't like it. I have valid reasons for saying what i did because what you've said points to it. Im sure others make the same connection. I'm sure other peeps can cope. |

Not once did I admit fault, say there was damage to two cars or accept I am liable for charges - which I've checked and I'm not, incidentally. Sorry to disappoint. As if someone - following an accident of any kind - wouldn't feel bad enough anyway, only to come on here for others to drag you right down. Jesus. |

Tough way to learn a lesson but that's what zebra/pelican/toucan/puffin crossings are for.
Regardless of how much of a wally you were for running from in front of an obstruction you couldn't see around, the main thing is you weren't seriously injured and cars can be repaired regardless of who ends up paying. |

Exactly me to and it was hardly nasty. Really shouldn't make treads if you can't take any criticism. The OP has suggested she walked out into the road while dogging a bus. Is the OP suggesting it wasnt her fault? |

I have hit a moving car!
Lashed out with my foot after being buzzed so close on my bicycle in traffic. I think it hurt me more than it hurt his bumper but could have been a lot worse!

"30mph and you got up?
The fuck. ..
I've been hit by a motorcycle, got up and walked off, kind of my own fault as tried to cross a road through traffic, saw a gap and bang
What happened to the biker?"
He was okay and more interested in how I was. He did similar to me, saw a gap, thought he would overtake traffic but didn't see me |

"Glad you're not too badly hurt OP.
A few years ago a mate's missus was knocked down & killed by a car that had lost control, she was on the pavement. It was 6.30 am and she was going to fetch a paper from the village shop
Ironically it was near the pedestrian crossing outside the school where she was the lollipop lady......"
I sympathise with your friend for his loss. I am a lollipop lady and encounter daily people in their cars with no regard for myself or the children i have to cross over the road. It's a busy road and I have 3 roads to cover. It's not just parents who drive without care, school taxis, people on their way to work and they disregard the speed limit too. I've had a couple of near misses, not my fault either. |

"Anyone had this happen to them? I was dodging traffic this morning, running late for work...dodged a bus only to run straight into a car doing 30, came out of nowhere from behind the bus.
Yes I was a bit shaken and I'm still in shock. No broken bones but a very swollen and ugly elbow.
Lessons learned...only cross at the lights from now on. What was I thinking?"
I hope you are feeling better now and please take more care |
