But she's like 75 and I think its a generational thing I just don't understand why she cant put them away for a afternoon.

"Your taking your friend into your nans domain, so it for your friend to accept it not for your nan to change anything in her home." This! He knows the score. If it offends him he shouldn't go and why the op would invite his friend to cause discomfort to both of them is beyond me.

I have a white partner, there are certain family members I wouldn't introduce him to as I know their views on white people.

"It amuses me when Caucasians say this or that isn't racist, like you absolutely know how a non-white person must feel about something when in reality the assertion probably reflects your true feelings on race. As a youngling I didn't think golly wogs were racists. Even thought tv shows like Love Thy Neighbour and Mind Your Language were good as well as funny. As I became older and wiser I realised how they reinforced negative stereotypes and encouraged the use of pejorative language. Excusing an elderly person for enjoying what is a racist toy by saying it's a generational thing simply means she comes from a generation of racists. Having Swyped all of the above, I must point out I do believe everyone is entitled to their own views, misguided as they may be, and if she chooses to display these items in the confines of her own home, then that is her prerogative. The black friend has been forewarned so if he feels he would be offended he can just avoid the situation." Simply: this!

"As a child of the 80s I find them offensive. Being black and from the inner city of had my share of prejudice but not really suffered racism and certainly not to the extent of black and Irish back in the day. I think the Goliwog does represent racism... whether it was intended or not I couldn't say as haven't looked into it but would say yes if they were banned. The older generation tend to say coloured rather than black... I would find the term coloured offensive from a young person but don't take offence from older generation as i know they are from a different era. I've even told some just call me black but they see that a racist and don't want to offend me. My mate goes out in a trilby covered in various golliwogs about 20 in total.... he just happens to be 6'3 and very dark, he said he likes to look at the reaction of white people when they notice them " I understand the generation gap with the words "coloured" etc but what bothers me is that words associated with being racist are only racist depending on who is using them Listen to some of the black artists out at the moment, I like their music mainly because it's bass heavy but fucking hell if I repeated some of the words used in their lyrics I'd be called racist.....kids will be growing up listening to that music and will be hearing all these words thrown about and then told you can't say that !! They can but you can't

"Golliwogs are not banned. I don't know why people think they are. Golliwogs weren't invented to be a racist symbol anymore than a rag dolly anna was. The problem is what they CAME to represent. I think it's wrong to deliberately offend anyone but I also think that there are good arguments to be had and then there are spurious indulgent and uneccesary ones." So if they weren't invented to be racist, why does it resemble stereotypes of a black person... Frizzy hair, big lips and dark skin?? "The "gollywog" is something I find racist in certain context, I find them outdated old toys, from a different time, and older generations don't see them as harm full, but there are that element of people who have them just to provoke a reaction so that they can defend their right to have what ever they want in their own homes, I know one guy like this, a delivery driver who would display a gollywog key ring, it was only after a few weeks of me ignoring it that he asked me "do you find this offensive?" To which I answer "no, your just a fucking dick head" but I suspect your nana is of a different generation one that genuinely meant no harm, not like people of my age who know that a little common sence helps us all live together"

He refers to himself as a spastic, mong etc as does some of his friends. Do you think it would cross my mind to use the language he does? In 100 years time will it be cool to have posters of hitler?

"She has a couple of Golliwogs in her living room that been sat on top of the sofa for as long as I can remember. Anyway cut a long story short I'm going to visit her with a friend who's black and asked if she put them away while we visit tomorrow. She say's its pathetic he should be offended by a dolly. So have we become too sensitive or is it offensive.? Go fabbers. x Did your friend tell you he'd find it offensive? Well I did tell him and he asked why she would have them in this day and age.? " You need tell him she is your nan,its a childhood toy,and an innocent one at that.. If he hasa problem with it, oh deary me!

"Oooooh, this is a juicy one. Hahahaaaa! Now where do I start? My favourite quote in these matters is this: it is hard to prove/ cry "racism" without sounding racist yourself. I am 100% African, never mind what my passport or birth cert says. In my father's country, I have heard ppl say " blackie" and this means one who is very dark( trust me some of us are). Now is that racist? NO! Back to the original nan question. I will answer the question with an analogy. If a dog/ cat was being brought into your living room and you had a live fish on a tray in open view and within reach, what would you do ? Who feels it knows it. Amen " Which i feel is exactly why kids should have golliwogs to play with... ps.. and id put the fish in water.

"Of course I wouldn't be offended. I'm white and never felt black oppression. Your black friend on the other hand... Thing is I can see 2 sides of the coin I can understand it being offensive to him if he's sensitive about a light hearted white boy characterisation of slavery. I know some say it's old fashioned but so are signs that said, "No blacks, no dogs, no irish!" I'm going to wager pretty heavily her friend has never experienced slavery either.... OMG hun will you lighten up for 5 mins please. You're like the grim reaper of the forums. " If you ask nicely I might let you play with my scythe :p

"My old mum had a golliwog - I've got old pictures of her cuddling it, having a tea-party with it (with a white doll and a toy dog) and generally loving it. She told me that she got it when she was a kid because she really loved how it felt to cuddle. As a 6 year old child in the 1950's she was able to look past the colour of its "skin" and love it for what it was. It's a crying shame that some "adults" in the 21st century can't do the same. " Exactly!! All kids should be given dolls of all sorts to play with,so at least THEY might grow up being a decent person...Its only the adults that create this idiocy

I don't know why people think they. maybe because they have been removed from everything they was ever on like Enid Blyton books, black jack chews(sweets) and Robinson's jam etc.... and major toy shops like Hamleys have banned the sale of them so.... "Ha bloody ha I'm not fat nor a bitch I'm overweight because of my physical disabilities which actually prevent me from exercising to loose it But don't ever let an ignorant inaccuracy get in the way of a thought provoking statement now will you dear hahaha " Well I'll say it and risk a visit to the naughty step: by any definition of the word you are indeed fat. I'm not trying to be nasty here, just pointing out a glaringly obvious fact. You may use any euphemism you wish, and the reason for you being the size you are may be justified. Whatever, you are fat.

Go fabbers. x My sister in law had a friend who wanted to adopt a child, this women had a collection of golliwog dolls and when she was visited by social services for an interview she was accused of being a racist. Is this polictian correctness gone barmy ?. "

"Being 'offended ' seems to be the national pastime these days!!!" Exactly! I'm going to get a fat ginger gollywog with learning disabilities in a wheelchair - who clearly has borderline personality disorder and is flying the St Georges flag .... FFS

"But did he find the dolls offensive? I've got a model Stuka bomber I made when I was a kid, it's got swastikas all over it. Am I going to burn in hell??" Not for the Stuka but for being a swinger ... you will burn slowly

"Golliwogs are not banned. I don't know why people think they. maybe because they have been removed from everything they was ever on like Enid Blyton books, black jack chews(sweets) and Robinson's jam etc.... and major toy shops like Hamleys have banned the sale of them so.... So roll your eyes........ intelligent comment. Golliwogs are not banned wholesale nor are they illegal. I'll spare you the condescending emoticon. " but they have been dropped by every major company i wonder why

"Yes!!!! Clearly racist but only the ignorant people will see otherwise Over sensitive ignorant black men cause this problem" so nothing to do with the people who took a child's toy and made it a symbol of racism hence the reason for this whole thread?
