Is my nan a rascit.?

She has a couple of Golliwogs in her living room that been sat on top of the sofa for as long as I can remember.

Anyway cut a long story short I'm going to visit her with a friend who's black and asked if she put them away while we visit tomorrow.

She say's its pathetic he should be offended by a dolly.

So have we become too sensitive or is it offensive.?

It's offensive to any anyone who's offended by it, you can't tell someone whether they should be offended or not. Personally I'm not (him) although as a youngster the word 'wog' after the golli was aimed in my direction. Looking at a golli these days does remind me of those times but I'm not offended by the doll itself. If I were your friend I'd find it a bit funny/amusing and not be offended as I understand the doll in its time and true historical context and how your Nan would view them with fondness but I'm not the friend you're taking so can't say how they'd take it. It's you're judgement I'm afraid, just prewarn them so they know what they might expect, if they don't make an excuse not to go I'm pretty sure they'll be okay with it.

The "gollywog" is something I find racist in certain context, I find them outdated old toys, from a different time, and older generations don't see them as harm full, but there are that element of people who have them just to provoke a reaction so that they can defend their right to have what ever they want in their own homes, I know one guy like this, a delivery driver who would display a gollywog key ring, it was only after a few weeks of me ignoring it that he asked me "do you find this offensive?" To which I answer "no, your just a fucking dick head" but I suspect your nana is of a different generation one that genuinely meant no harm, not like people of my age who know that a little common sence helps us all live together

Now I don't fing darkies racist, it's a word that was used in the 60s and 70s to avoid using words that were offensive and there were plenty of them, tbf you're nana sounds sweet

like i said i don't think she is racist at all she's just from that generation were it was ok and non offensive to have a golliwog's and use terms like darkies etc... but obviously now adays it's very different story hence you're situation

Thing is I can see 2 sides of the coin I can understand it being offensive to him if he's sensitive about a light hearted white boy characterisation of slavery. I know some say it's old fashioned but so are signs that said, "No blacks, no dogs, no irish!"

It's just the way of that generation! And she probably upset that you've asked her to put them away because by asking it shows embarrassment of something that's a part of her! Why should she have to change her home to suit you? If you don't like the dolls why not take your nan out to lunch and bring your friend along to problem solved

Nothing racist about golliwogs. We have some in our house. We bought a family of them for my uncle n took them down one at a time when we saw them. First a male one, then a lady one, then ended up with 2 little ones. Now we're left with them as he has moved to China n couldn't take them.

Anyway. If u want to know more about racist gran, u should meet my gran. She's horrible. Called my gf at the time all the names under the sun as my then gf is Asian..

To some it is a toy from their childhood remembered with fondness rather than malice... Plus, wasn't it used to advertise something at some point?

We found a shop in Camber Sands that sold a lot of old stuff and I was amazed to see Golliwogs in there. My ex's Mum litterally cried when she saw them as her Father used to collect them, she asked if she could have one as an early Birthday present.

I didn't have the heart to say no...

The offense taken - can be more harmful to harmony than the supposedly offensive item.

Leave the golliwogs where they are. If your friend chooses to be offended he should do so with dignity.

There's a lot of patronising of 'nan' or her age in some of the responses on this thread.

People of all ages keep their faculties and know exactly what they are doing and saying.

There are some who are able to fight colour prejudice with intelligence and then there are those who simply bleat loudly because they feel they have the 'right' to take a moral stance and give stunning performances of outrage and indignation simply designed to 'shame' others.

It's pretty difficult to take them seriously.

the love of my life was mixed race, father Mauri, mother jewish.When she was a kid she was called wog, darkie, you name it! we saw a golliwog in a shop in Brighton. 'I used to love my one' she said!'Didn't you have one?'. 'It's a doll and I'm a bloke' I replied. 'Sexist pig, whats wrong with dolls?'. How do you work that one out? I'd question why the op would invite his friend into such an environment. I have a white partner, there are certain family members I wouldn't introduce him to as I know their views on white people.

If you Google the origin behind golliwog dolls,then I'm positive everyone that might be wondering why a black person might be offended by them will understand.

However as other posters have said, it was seen as acceptable a while back and your gran might not know their history.

Some things (hopefully) just disappear with generations.

It amuses me when Caucasians say this or that isn't racist, like you absolutely know how a non-white person must feel about something when in reality the assertion probably reflects your true feelings on race.

As a youngling I didn't think golly wogs were racists. Even thought tv shows like Love Thy Neighbour and Mind Your Language were good as well as funny.

As I became older and wiser I realised how they reinforced negative stereotypes and encouraged the use of pejorative language.

Excusing an elderly person for enjoying what is a racist toy by saying it's a generational thing simply means she comes from a generation of racists.

Having Swyped all of the above, I must point out I do believe everyone is entitled to their own views, misguided as they may be, and if she chooses to display these items in the confines of her own home, then that is her prerogative.

The black friend has been forewarned so if he feels he would be offended he can just avoid the situation.

In contrast, if my mother had a gollywog on display in her home I would explain to her why she should take it down.

As I've mentioned it is a generational thing and I get why our grannies might display it, but anyone around my age now?

We all did and said things that things that we thought were OK decades ago but if you check yourself before using a term in front of some people now then that's not PC gone mad.

And the icon thing. If I saw a burning cross or someone displaying a name flag should I not be offended? Just saying.

Sorry if anyone thinks I'm being over serious here but I'm left surprised by many of the responses on this thread.

As a child of the 80s I find them offensive. Being black and from the inner city of had my share of prejudice but not really suffered racism and certainly not to the extent of black and Irish back in the day. I think the Goliwog does represent racism... whether it was intended or not I couldn't say as haven't looked into it but would say yes if they were banned. The older generation tend to say coloured rather than black... I would find the term coloured offensive from a young person but don't take offence from older generation as i know they are from a different era. I've even told some just call me black but they see that a racist and don't want to offend me. My mate goes out in a trilby covered in various golliwogs about 20 in total.... he just happens to be 6'3 and very dark, he said he likes to look at the reaction of white people when they notice them

Listen to some of the black artists out at the moment, I like their music mainly because it's bass heavy but fucking hell if I repeated some of the words used in their lyrics I'd be called racist.....kids will be growing up listening to that music and will be hearing all these words thrown about and then told you can't say that !!

Noooo. My mum anddad are same. Its a feckin doll made from fabric!! Worlds gone pc mad if you ask me!! Mum had a doll. She bought a keyring too as it reminded her of the doll. Yrs ago they were on jam jars. Some you could save a token or the jam jar lid send them off to get a keyring or teddy. It just reminded her of her childhood teddies and dolls and that was all!!!

Golliwogs are not banned. I don't know why people think they are.

Golliwogs weren't invented to be a racist symbol anymore than a rag dolly anna was.

The problem is what they CAME to represent.

I think it's wrong to deliberately offend anyone but I also think that there are good arguments to be had and then there are spurious indulgent and uneccesary ones.

I had a golliwog as a young child. It was lovingly knitted by my Nana who copied the Robinson's golliwog off the marmalade jar. It was probably one of my two favourite soft toys as a child. However when my mum and dad realised what it represented and how it could be seen,, we decided it should go to the tip. That was in the early 80's!

As a youngling I didn't think golly wogs were racists. Even thought tv shows like Love Thy Neighbour and Mind Your Language were good as well as funny.

As I became older and wiser I realised how they reinforced negative stereotypes and encouraged the use of pejorative language.

Excusing an elderly person for enjoying what is a racist toy by saying it's a generational thing simply means she comes from a generation of racists.

Lol. Golliwogs were never band, still on sale in the bewitched area of Burley Dorset. Brought one just two years ago & have it sitting in my display cabinet with all sorts of little ornimantes from all over the world of every shape and form. My goliwogs great, it's nostalgic reminds me of how stupid black and white people can be. Arguing over a doll that was a found loved toy in the 70s usually brought for white male child. Do children of African descent have action men, based on a soldier inherent on going to war,bet they sure do. But they don't call us white guys "hey action man"!

Personally I would rather be called a goliwog, they look like ther having much more fun than action man does driving his tank and flying his helicopters. Sure action man was great as a kid. but Mr golli looks so much more light hearted and chilled. Maybe if we had more goliwog and less action men. Finding this a very interesting post as I don't really have any experience of golliwogs, must have missed that one in my childhood. My mum is 85, so she is in the gran generation and I would totally call her on anything I deemed to be racist. I was married to an African American, the correct term there, and we could not go to visit his family in Mississippi because I would be in danger because of the reaction of the white community there. His childhood experience was of finding his uncle hanged with his cock cut off and put in his mouth because he had talked to a white woman, and this was part of his childhood. Into this environment, we had mixed race children. When we split and I brought my children to a white island community, where they were the only black children they were frequently called the n word by other children. I was even told by a head teacher when I went to complain that they would have to get used to this. I did not, as a white woman, despite my experiences, have the experience to help them deal with this. So, we moved to the mainland where we now experience a more normal life and my children are in contact with other people who they can hell equip them to deal with it. I think we need to fight stereotypes and I also think that we cannot make assumptions about anyone's experiences, be they black or white. Just saying.

I live near where Robertsons used to make the jam and marmalade and remember collecting the tokens to get a gollywog badge.

Yes we have moved on and the words used to describe people with a variety of skin colours have changed along the years.

I'm sure your friend will appreciate that your Nan is from a particular era. Seems odd though to put yourself in such a position knowing what she's like.

Our country has changed massively in a couple of generations. My first wife was mixed race (used to be half caste back in the day but even that's offensive now!)- my nan used to use the word 'nig nogs' (even in front of my wife) all the time. I just can't imagine using such language now - it was a different era - and in my opinion a bad one - to be a 'non-white' person in the 60s to the 80s was not a very nice experience and you had to be tough just to survive. The English generally were racist - no doubt- things are thankfully much better now (although there are some, to be fair, who will also exploit the race card. I`m a white fella who is simply 'colour blind' - and I`ve never understood why people don't treat people for 'who'what they are' rather than judge by colour of skin/religion etc.

Difficult forum this is. You have to look at it from both sides. You need two people to be ok about things. The person with the doll may not be racist. However the person who sees it may take offence.

Then the other way round. The person who has the doll is a racist and the person who sees it really does not give a shit.

So in the scenario where the person has the doll is not racist and the person who sees it is not racist then that is where there is no problem.

Where race and religeon are concerned, I have friends from sooooo many backgrounds that no one could ever say I was. I see people as people. I judge people on their attitude and how they treat me.

As this is more then one person involved then both have to be ok.

We run the karaoke at Xtasia and there are a few songs that I have had to ban. Whist the music is really catchy and I have heard them played at other karaokes I understand that to be able to allow someone to sing them I have to be happy that firstly they will sing it as they like the song and not to provoke anyone and also that the people listening to it are also not going to take offence. With that many people involved I could never guarantee that everyone is going to be happy about it. So I ban the song.

However as someone also said these dolls do hold value.

Generally there are so many things that can be hurtful but always depends how it is put. That is why it is very dangerous to debate or discuss things by text. No one knows the expressions behind it.

So after all this.... I really have not answered this at all as I do not know the people involved.

However I believe that hiding the doll does not mean someone thinks it is wrong, they are just cautious to the point that it could come over wrong.

Totally different situation... My dad died and when I was in our local chemist the guy behind the counter slipped up and asked how mom n dad were. Without thinking I said "Dad's been better"... He laughed knowing that he could but someone else in the store thought that my comment was disgusting. I just thought "I laugh or I cry". I try to make the best out bad situations. It is down to both sides of it.

My old mum had a golliwog - I've got old pictures of her cuddling it, having a tea-party with it (with a white doll and a toy dog) and generally loving it. She told me that she got it when she was a kid because she really loved how it felt to cuddle. As a 6 year old child in the 1950's she was able to look past the colour of its "skin" and love it for what it was. It's a crying shame that some "adults" in the 21st century can't do the same.

Swastika is waaaaay older than Hinduism and it's meant lots of shit in all sorts of orientations though out the millennia it's a a simple to draw and carve symbol that's aesthetically pleasing in many patterns so is common through human culture.

UPDATE: Nan and my friend got on really well, she thinks he's a lovely young man.

She even gave him a fruit cake she made to take home for his kids, so he's well in. lol

Oh and for anyone wondering why I took him around in first place it was to help clear her shed out she's moving to a bungalow and he's got a van.
