With all the cost of living threads and politics threads made me think.
Do you personally live within your. Salary or do you depend on your overdraft
Personally my overdraft is for emergencies |

Within, put money as side for savings straight away, spend what I need to then when next pay check comes in anything left over gets moved to the "non specific savings" savings account. |

I only use my overdraft for emergencies, it's a very small one now. When I was married our over draught would be used to pay wages when contractors were slow in paying up. When you have 16 employees and contractors didn't like parting with their money it came in handy. |

I've been in my overdraft since the first day of university when I paid my first set of tuition fees. So most months I'm in it by the end of the month. It doesn't really bother me though. If I had to pay it back I could by just not spending on any non-essentials for a month. |

Life is so much simpler when you don't have money lol I may be looked down upon by some people because I have no car, no house of my own now (he has it),no flash jewellery and I can't afford to pay for a hotel, but I have my sanity and peace of mind now. I sacrificed a good career to put others first. I would do it all again |

Yes i do.
I had a substantial amount of savings a few years ago, they've gone ages ago but i never go into debt with anyone who will charge me for that.
We live quite modestly. If i can get anything for free i will do that too.
I'm pretty good a financing my family and finding bargains. |

I've lived on my own since the age of 17 so yes, I did get into debt, I did have a small credit card now I don't. I also relied on my overdraft in order to survive (food) on occasions, I am now financially secure with no overdraft or credit cards, but I think that just come's with time and life experience. |

We actually live within our income, a reasonable margin, something handed down from my parents train of thought and seems to work for us. We still get to do some nice things and treat ourselves once in a while. |

I can thankfully say that I have been lucky in that respect and never been in the red or had an overdraft. Although to be fair I've made my own luck.
I feel for the people that rely on it to get them through, from no fault of their own. |

We spent a lot of years living beyond our means. In recent years we came to our senses, but we will need a lot more years to undo the damage we did to ourselves. |

I did live beyond my means for a small time (Male half here), took out an overdraft to cover repairs to my motorcycle while i was working 3 hours a week and am still paying back the overdraft, but once I am debt free we will most certainly not borrow anymore money, the economy is not stable and the last thing we need is racked up with debt with 2 young children |

We're approaching that, just the one bratters here though. We've tried to avoid the cost by going down the scholarship route from an early age but are preparing in case that avenue closes which it may. Very, very expensive but will support them obviously. We take our hats off to you.

These threads always go this way. I should probably be rounded up and shot, because I have debts while buying nice stuff that I like, because I want to. |

I understand that, but I don't think it is anything to be ashamed of. I'm lucky I bought my 1 bed flat when I was twenty, I still have a mortgage as I was originally on an endowment and had to re mortgage to a repayment. But saying that it is only 1 bed but I know I have at least £70k equity if I do decide to move to somewhere slightly bigger, I just don't want a much bigger mortgage. In this day and age sometimes it can be very difficult to live within means easily. |

Funny that as I haven't seen any negative posts about people who use credit?

Overdrafts, credit cards and loans are great and handy when you have a steady income and want to buy alot and spread it over a number of years. But you need to be careful because it is easy to borrow more and more to keep up with current trends or social and peer preassure |

As a wise man once observed "if your outgoings exceed your income, your upkeep will be your downfall".
Apart from my student debt for a recent degree (which I don't have to pay if not working, and is cancelled when I retire/die/become disabled - so it's really just a graduate tax), I've been debt free except for a mortgage, since I left uni after my first degree.
I paid my mortgage off 15 years ago, so now I can get by working part time. I still run 2 cars and a motorbike and will be going to Canada for a month this summer.
Most people can cut down if they're prepared to live without Sky TV, Xboxes, designer labels, takeaways etc etc. I only spend around £1 a day on food, but eat well and healthily.
Each to their own though, but I wouldn't be comfortable spending more than I earn. |

The implication of all the 'no, not me, I never use credit' posts is that use of credit is a bad thing. That's where this is coming from. Not trying to play any kind of victim here, it was supposed to be a jokey comment. |

I live within my salary.... my folks had to be careful with cash when I was growing up I guess it rubbed off on me. Fortunately I earn enough I never have to go without but if I want a big extravagence then I'll save for it rather than use credit.
I think this is getting harder though... because of the limited run of some high end tech for example, by the time youve saved enough it may longer be available. If you buy in to having to have the latest variant of everything then manufacturers have you by the short n curlies.

A lot of people do believe credit is a bad thing doesn't mean they judge others for using it.
I try to avoid credit because I'm very aware that my personal situation can change very rapidly if I suffer a relapse into depression which would likely cost me my job (and before that the loss of my shift rate to the sick pay day rate).
So having a lot of credit is a big risk ad there's a chance I could lose my income with no warning.
Doesn't mean I judge anyone for whom it works. |

i dont in any way think credit is a bad thing! i am just painfully aware that in the job im in, on a zero hour contract, that it would be all to easy to get myself in a real mess! never knowing what im going to take home each month would make it very difficult to budget for repayments on anything regularly... |

Skip generations is the key :p save up buy the best one then use it while you save up and skip 2-3 generations then you can have a significant upgrade rather than just getting the small steping stone upgrades each year.
I used to have a mate who always had the best computer bits by constantly upgrading and selling the still nearly new old model he had.
Meant for a relatively small ongoing cost he always had the top stuff but it mean til he ever stopped upgrading he'd quickly see the value of what he had drop to the point it wouldn't make enough at sale to fund the next upgrade |

I agree it's the implication rather than people coming out and saying it. People assume that because you have to rely on credit that it's because you have to have the best of everything and have takeaways all the time and expensive holidays etc. When it just isn't the case. I'm happily living in my debt. ..no victim here. |

These topics tend to be for giving your opinion as it's just a question and people aren't interested in reading them until bored later on. Well that's how i did it, read OP, answered, am bored so came in to see what everyone else had put. |
