Smoking is bad for you!

I've started working part-time at a local pub again and find myself getting back into dirty old habits, smoking being the worst one. Before this I hadn't touched or even thought about a ciggie since the last time I worked at a pub which was 2 years ago!

It's easy enough to get caught up in it - everyone else smokes (social),it's the only time you get a breather (fag breaks) away from the bar, and it does de-stress you a bit when it gets busy.

How to stop this?? I'm usually a health freak and will be the first to tell people off for lighting up.

Any tips/advice? And please don't say the obvious one of "don't work there then" cos I need the money and I enjoy what I do cos I'm good at it. Thanks in advance

Why should smokers have breaks away, and non smokers stay at the bar ?

Apart from the obvious reason that one is not allowed to smoke in pubs anymore....

Non-smokers can have breaks too but you just go outside and find yourself surrounded by smokers! Toxic

Buy an e-cig and still join them on your break

"Buy an e-cig and still join them on your break"

I was really hoping it wouldn't resort to that

This is blunt but I think its helpful.

Dont buy any cigarettes from the shop, that way you cant light one up.

It dosent de-stress you at all, no matter what your head tells you, it is infact making your heart work harder and no body enjoys smoking.

Thanks this is helpful.

I don't buy cigarettes I get offered them by work colleagues, which I find nigh on impossible to refuse! I go to work thinking "I'm not smoking today" and then as soon as someone asks "fancy a smoke?" I'm like go on then! If I didn't smoke at work I'd most definitely be a social pariah, which shouldn't bother me but for some reason it does. Ugh....

All this talk about the addiction just being mental and not very physical is complete rubbish. Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances known to man - many times worse than heroin or . Withdrawal symptoms differ from person to person but they can get very bad if you're not ready for them.

That said you can use this knowledge to increase your chances of quitting, which you do have to do through sheer will - there's no easy way out. When you get cravings, it's important to recognise them for what they are - your body suffering withdrawal symptoms from nicotine. it's just a chemical imbalance that your body needs to get used to again. This helped me deal with cravings a lot.

Substituting for chewing gum also helped me. I tried nicotine gum for a while but then found that normal gum was fine - I just needed something to take my mind off a craving, and cravings only tend to last 5 minutes.

Finally, it's a good idea to start exercising. When I started running, I downloaded the couch to 5K running app and found that my running was rubbish when I smoked. That gave me more motivation to stay smoke free. There was a sense that 'ok you could have a cigarette, but your run tomorrow will be ruined'. Given i was overweight at the time and determined to get fit, it was a great motivation to stay off the cigs.

Failing all that, e-cigs really are a good substitute

Good luck whatever you do

Great advice, thanks.

I'm a keen runner as well and I should know better! Haven't had a decent jog in a while though due to holding down two jobs atm but I need to get it in my thick skull that my lungs will be fucked if I keep on inhaling this shit!

You should get the nike+ running app. It helps you work out if you're getting faster and encourages you to push yourself. You realise pretty quickly that to get better numbers, you need to stop smoking

E cig? Especially if you use the liquids that don't actually have nicotine in them then it's literally just a favour in water but it keeps your fingers occupied and let's you fit in while everyone else is smoking.

Use non nicotine liquid then you don't get addicted again.

MAMOBA, miles and miles of bugger all (Aberdeenshire)

This may be a little harsh... but just man up and tell them no.

Are you really that afraid of what someone else thinks about you if you say no? Tell them you are trying to get back into running and keep fit, and find that it really affects you.

Wakefield

A good friend of mine has just given up (27 days now) and she has gone to one of these smoking clinics.

She is on patches and slowly weaning off them.

What she has been told and what she agrees with is that it is about situations.

Where she used to go into the kitchen in the morning, make a cup of tea, have a cig and then go and wash etc she now does things the other way around.

Breaking habits.

She now has a puzzle book at the table so instead of having a cig she looks at a crossword.

Apparently it is down to changing habits.
