Norfolk or Devon?

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

I'm planning where to go on holiday later this year and the choice has come down to Devon or Norfolk. Both are tempting; I've been to Devon before, enjoyed it and still have plenty there that I haven't seen, while Norfolk would be somewhere completely new and fresh.

So, citizens of Devon and Norfolk, tell me why I should come to your county. Or, if you'd rather, why I shouldn't.

East Sussex

I have relatives in both areas and have holidayed in both. Norfolk is a lot flatter than Devon but there is some beautiful scenery and lovely beaches. Devon is more hilly than Norfolk but there is some beautiful scenery and lovely beaches.

What do you like to do on holiday?

As mentioned, Norfolk is beautiful.

We have the Broads, lots of beaches and seaside stuff, Blakeney point (boat trip to a bird sanctuary via some seals), various museums, Norwich castle museum, some fabulous pubs...

Tell me what are you interested in and I'll tell you what's here that you might enjoy.

I'm a history need, so point me at castle or museum and I'm likely to be happy. However, it's been pointed out to me that I should probably broaden my horizons a bit, so I'm open to other suggestions.

There's a lot I didn't get to last time I was in Devon - I want to visit Falmouth and the Jurassic Coast at some point, for instance - so I know is have plenty to do. On the other hand, in Norfolk I can get a place with a hot tub...

The Castle museum is huge, with loads to see. We also have a toy museum (at least we used to), military museums and various other museums.

There are some beautiful walks and lovely scenery.

There's a glass blowing place where you can watch the glass being prepared, worked and blown.

Boat trips. Nature stuff. Wildlife parks. A sealife centre. The Thursford Collection. A shire horse centre. Loads of halls, houses and National Trust places. A puppet theatre. A narrow gauge steam railway.

There's a lot to do here, if you could drag yourself out of the hot tub!

Well that would be the issue, I could spend the whole week gently poaching myself - especially if I had company in it.

In a warning episode to read things carefully, I very nearly booked the place in Norfolk with the hot tub before realising it doesn't have internet access

Back to the drawing board. Any more opinions? We haven't really heard from the Devon contingent.

No internet access?

I know it's Norfolk and things can be a little backward in terms of technology and innovation at times but really, most of us do have the internet.

With a few notable exceptions, the local fab 'talent' is rather lacking. Send out a few messages and I'm sure you could arrange company during your holiday.

Devon without a doubt.

Dawlish warren and Brixham are beautiful and the perfect getaway to unwind.

That's what I thought. Very disappointed - having had a quick browse, there were several local ladies I would have liked to share a tub with

It's my own fault for not booking somewhere earlier when there were more options available.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Go to the Jurassic coast - it's just stunning. Lyme Regis (Dorset but on the Devon border) is my favourite place of all.

If you have friends I can recommend a great house to rent but it doesn't have a hot tub.

Both very nice but Norfolk for me because it's nearer less crowded and on the whole cheaper.

I can't comment on that. I can't stand football.

It's simple

Norfolk if you're a beginner kite surfer and want flat water, bird watching and nice people

Devon if you're into nice long period waves, cream teas and meeting nice people

West Wales if your an adventurous wave rider, mountain biker, climber or hill walker with an eye for both geological history and political history such as castles and enjoy people changing from talking English to Welsh when you enter a shop

Wales for me tomorrow xx

Falmouth is fantastic and happens to be the third largest natural harbour in the world but its a bit of a trip down from Devon but if you do make it I suggest a day out exploring the lizard peninsular and some of the best beach's in the world in particular kynance and mullion.

The Jurassic coast is fantastic from the amazing arch of durdle door to old harry rocks at swanage unfortunately most of it is in Dorset and is a bit of a trip up from Devon but thoroughly recommend

I do, but I'm more in need of a personal trainer with a cattle prod and a whip than a meet, I think.
