Diesel or petrol. It sounds like a problem with either fuel delivery or ignition fault. Some golfs and audi cars were on watch dog a few years ago for faulty coil packs |

"A Golf Diesel or petrol and does it run smoothly once you have reached a constant speed?.
Petrol it's happened 3 times in the last 2 weeks " . Have you let it run low on petrol at any time or bought a different type of fuel? The local garage should be able to identify the problem fairly quickly . When was it last serviced? |

"Try asking on a VAG owners site if anyone near you has a VAGCOM cable they'd be willing to plug in for a cup of tea and a slice of cake. "
Don't let a garage plug the diagnostics in if you can avoid it. You'll be charged a fortune for the privilege |

It took me @t leSt 5 minutes to work out how to release the handbreak on my golf tonight - had to get the manual out, so I'm feeling unqualified to advise. Unless you were in the same boat, but my dizziness takes some beating, so sure you're not suffering from that. |

If you open the Bonnet you will find a large black Plastic Box with red and black cables coming out, Take the lid off and you will see Four Hamsters on a Wheel, One of them is probably constipated..Once you have freed the blockage the Car will run smoothly.
Hope this Helps

Is the engine light on?
If it is then take it to a garage and have it plugged in (just not a main dealer) most garages charge about £30-£50 for this but it will give them a fault code which indicates where to look (or if you have a friend who's into fixing their own cars they might have the kit and do it for a cuppa).
The list of things that can cause this is huge and we can guess all day long and still not be right.
It could be crap in the fuel, dirty/blocked injector, failed pre-cat lambda, fault in the EGR system (yes, even on a petrol), the garage may not have changed the air filter when they serviced it and it's blocked, the MAF could be dying and so on. |

It is better to have the problem diagnosed by a mechanic with the correct equipment . As it was serviced recently , the OP may already have a good relationship with her local garage . |

Totally agree with this.
You can even buy the equipment yourself for peanuts if you have a smart phone. The Torque Pro app costs about £3 and a Bluetooth ELM327 adapter costs about £5 on Amazon. It can diagnose and clear most engine codes (not things like airbags or ABS though). I have one plugged into my car all the time as it also monitors various engine parameters that aren't displayed on the dash gauges. |
