I went to Northumberland when they were building the Kielder Dam and reservoir. It was just a huge hole in the ground. The smell of the pine forests is something I will never forget, that and getting a little lost on our orienteering challenge |

There's a lovely ship museum in Barrow. Hardknott pass is worth a drive over, just the once. Northumberland is gorgeous, Cragside, Bamburgh and a second hand book shop at Alnwick station are great. A boat trip around the Farne's is charming. Avoid Yeavering, there's sod all there. |

I may finally stop there along the way. I always go past the sign and get a vision of an overweight teenage boy in glasses with ginger hair: Kirkby Lonsdale.

"I have envies. Cumbria is beautiful.
Don't forget I'm swimming in a tarn! I'm not looking forward to that bit.
Ah, I didn't know that was part of the plan. It still sounds fun."
The weather forecast says cold and rainy. The rain won't matter too much as I'll be getting wet anyway.
I did make a pen at the Pen Museum in Birmingham today though. I can't wait to use it.

Cool. I'm still loving my weird looking ergonomic pen. It's taken some practice, (because it requires a correct grip, which I didn't use originally), but I'm finally able to write properly, for a reasonable length of time with it.
I actually have 3 now because the original one was really part of a twin pack, (which was significantly cheaper than buying just one), and then I saw a metallic pink one... |

I KNOW!! I've only recently acquired this knowledge, hence visiting both.
I suggested a friend meet me there and he said he'd rather go to Rymans. I just need to find out where the Envelope Museum is... |

Despite being hardy Northern types Cumbria does manage some weather that even we'll not go walking in and the pencil museum was about the only indoor activity. |

If you're wanting to stay closer to Newcastle and you have satnav, I would recommend St Mary's lighthouse while you are still North of the Tyne.
Then through to Marsden Grotto (pub cut into cliff face and a lovely stretch of water when the waves are crashing in) before heading South. |

I didn't see this post before setting off so I didn't see any lighthouses.
I did go through the tunnel - they charge you to go to THE SOUTH.
I went to Bamburgh Castle and then did as Scotty said and drove along the coast road. You have a beautiful coastline.
