Bank holidays may be a thing of the past.
Jump to: Newest in thread
Well of all the people you'd think would get the day off, you'd pretty much think that people who work in a bank would be top of the list.
On May 4th, RBS plans to open 34 of its busiest branches, while Barclays is due to have as many as 50 high-street locations open.
Maybe we should just call them public holidays from now on. |

Phew, I thought this was a thread about them being abolished altogether - when the hell would I get ANY decorating / DIY done without Bank Holiday weekends? This weekend is no exception - whole weekend reserved for household chores! |

AFAIUI an employer is not statutorily bound to give "Bank Holidays" actually at the set days, though the vast majority actually do.
I always volunteer to work BH's whenever required and take the time off at other periods.

"I thought they were Anyway. Lots of places don't close thesedays and the time off is rolled into annual leave to be taken when staff want it. "
We are evolving into a 24 hour society. Emergency services work 24/7, most warehouse, distribution and supermarkets work the same. Only getting Christmas day and new years day as fixed annual leave.
I hate over crowded shops and gridlocked motorways. I would rather work nights and weekends and do my shopping midweek afternoon. And I'm not bothered about double time on Sundays and bank holidays.
What Makes me wonder if banks run their server systems 24/7 to process their cash point network, and online banking is processed almost instantly. Why don't standing orders get processed on a Sunday or bank holidays lol. |

Sorry but I will not be made to feel grateful because people in shops have to work! Most times you get time off in lieu or if you are really lucky you get overtime pay. Please don't act a martyr over it!
And for the record I have worked in industries where working bank holidays was required and if it was your standard shift pattern to work that day you did not get overtime, if you wanted it off you had to swap it. I've even worked Christmas day and new years day.
I have also volunteered for charity on boxing day |
