Many things can bring on depression noon quite knows why
Depression is genetic so if family members have suffered you have a higher chance of developing it yourself

The exact cause is not known. Anyone can develop depression. Some people are more prone to it and it can develop for no apparent reason. You may have no particular problem or worry, but symptoms can develop quite suddenly. So, there may be some genetic factor involved that makes some people more prone than others to depression.
An episode of depression may also be triggered by a life event such as a relationship problem, bereavement, redundancy, illness, etc. In many people it is a mixture of the two. For example, the combination of a mild low mood with some life problem, such as work stress, may lead to a spiral down into depression. |

I started getting the 'blues' when i was in my teens, i could shake em off in an hour. Now in my late forties im on Citalopram, and i think its something ive needed all my life to keep me level. Citalopram stops you using all your good stuff too soon, so is very natural |

You need to talk to someone trained to answer your questions, someone medically trained who knows how to treat you. Having said that however, if you are having feelings of depression then I'd suggest that talking to somebody, anybody, is the first step to recovery. Many people with depression hide it, the fact you're asking these questions in the first place suggests you're already taking the first steps..... |

It can be caused by many different things and there are many different ways to cope with it.
The most important thing to do is to speak to a specialist or go on a website that is for depression, not ask here. |

Some people who have no problems what so ever may get depression
I remember after having my child I suffered from post natal depression I had no problems what so every, I should have been happy, I had no idea why I wasn't, I used to sit crying and think what the fuck am I crying about
That's just how it is for some
It can be a chemical imbalance in your brain, the right medication will sort this out, everyone if different though what medication works for one may not for another |

Is that a general interest, concern for yourself, or are you worried about someone else?
Mind (UK mental health charity) are a good source of information and advice for any of those cases.
If you're genuinely concerned for your own wellbeing, speak to a gp or other health professional (or perhaps the samaritans if you're worried about making it "formal"). |

Because I'm a person who has suffered with several years of depression in various hospitals and a nursing home
So I'm able to tell you my experiences
And I'm currently doing a course to volunteer to go in to hospitals as a person who has survived it, to try to help others do the same

We all have times when we feel down and that's perfectly normal.
Sometimes we feel down for longer than usual after a trauma or life-changing event, such as the death of a loved one or losing a job.
For others of us the down periods can last for a very long, be impossible to shake off and make us feel that life is not worth living.
Some think that this is a chemical imbalance and others feel that it is about unresolved anger from early life events. It's a complex area.
There are lots of threads on here about depression (and suicide) where people have shared their stories and where others have helped people posting because they feel depressed.
OP, try reading some of those and see if that helps your exploration of the subject. |

Depression is not one thing, like a broken arm, it's complex and manifests itself differently for each individual.
What matters is how you are, what will help you whilst suffering and how can you transition to a better state.
There are theories, such as brain neurotransmitters such as serotonin being deficient but I believe it's likely more complex.
Therapy and medication together are often more effective than just one alone. If meds are needed, it can take some trialing to find the best for you. Exercise has good evidence to support its use as an aide too.
If you feel you may be suffering, see your Doctor. If you feel suicidal, a call to the Samaritans would be helpful,at any point.
We don't win medals from suffering and enlisting support from your GP will allow you to not feel isolated by the pain. If this is you, there are many high quality fab members here, as well as users who are open about their mental health issues. Many people understand and care. It's important to take care of yourself, so take some steps this week, if you feel able, to shed as much pressure as you can. Heavy burdens are unlikely to help you.

Remember also, in many clinical trials, a higher percentage of those who are on the placebo ( "dummy" treatment ) improve more than those who are the drugs. It's all in the mind. |

My depressive episodes can come on in a matter of minutes. However I am a manic depressive (now called bi polar syndrome or disorder) and I sometime rapid cycle...
I am proscribed a very strong anti-psychotic drug that works for me.
Go see your doctor, if s/he is not interested in mental health find a doctor that is, and talk to them. Be honest and tell them everything, depression is just one symptom of a number of mental illnesses and being treated for clinical depression when you are suffering from another illness is not good and happens quite a lot. |
