3DTV is finally dead
Jump to: Newest in thread
The last bastion of hope that 3D TV had has gone, with sky announcing that they are shutting their 3D channel in June after 5 years. All the 3D movies are going on-demand.
So who fell for the hype? |

I paid a pound for a pair of 3d specs to watch footy at the pub - does that count? It was rubbish to be honest, camera angles all seemed to be chosen to emphasise the depth of field (ie. to show off the technology) rather than to give the best view of what was going on. Funniest thing was walking into the pub during a popular game - the door was on the same wall as the big screen - and seeing a room full of blokes in giant glasses staring in your direction. spooky!
good riddance as far as I'm concerned. |

I haven't seen it, but I had heard that the only sport where it made a real difference to the watching experience was golf, as it gave a real sense of undulations etc. I don't watch 3D films as they give me a headache |

I knew 3d would die a death because they tried to introduce it in cinema way back in the 70s.The paper glasses they supplied you were o.k.but as one person said on here when you came out of the cinema your eyes took a couple of minutes to readjust.R.I.P. 3d. |

Picked our 3d stuff up cheap, don't mind watching films using it so will continue to do so for as long as they sell them. It's an acquired taste, and a bit marmite for most I guess but we dig it. |

I didn't. I resisted. I even discussed 3D TV technology with someone on the BBC stand at EXPO at Earls Court a few years ago (EXPO is an exhibition for the TV and film production industry)
My argument was that there was a dalliance with 3D in the 80's which entailed the end user having to wear a pair of 'glasses' and that, though much improved, we hadn't reached a point where such eyewear was no longer necessary.
I suspect that 3DTV will be back in a few years. It seems to follow a cycle.
It's a shame, because I'd quite like to get one now, along with a 3D Blu-Ray player for watching the occasional film in 3D |

any tv channel can be made 3d by exploiting exploiting the "pulfrich effect". get sunglasses, preferably not polarised, wear the lens over one only (ie.. darken one eye, leave the other normal).
now watch tv. it's not 3d all the time, butdepends on whether the picture on tv is panning sideways. you'll see a 3d effect depending on the direction of pan and the eye you chose to darken.
cool eh?
works well for football, so I hear.

We recently had to buy another TV after our full HD Samsung died. We almost bought a 3D TV before seeing a 4K one for the same price. Now, that IS SUPERB! Shame hardly any channels show 4K HD but netflix have a few and I know that the next series of the lion documentary filmed in Kenya for BBC1 is filmed on a new 4G camera. How do I know? I went to school with the cameraman lol. It's amazing what you find out on Facebook lol |

"We have a new 3D TV but only because the TV we wanted happened to have it, not because we wanted it.
Would love to watch a porno in 3D though."
The porn industry has for some time been acknowledged as the leading indicator as to whether a new technology will take off...They loved DVD, they loved Blu-ray, they hated WAP, they loved the internet, they obviously weren't that keen on 3D, hence it failed! |

That's all well and good but it will still be broadcast at 1080i, at best, unless that put the ultra-HD out via iPlayer. |

not me.... i was thinking of getting it... but the bloke in the shopping centre was probably too honest and said it works much better for movies than it did for sport...
and i tried those sky 3d specs on and after 10 minutes got a blistering headache....

4K was supposed to take over 1080p but the Japs have already got a 25K TV ready for sale so battles to get a user friendly format will always go on.
I use an MKV player which plays dozens of formats including Blu Ray & 3D, Blu Ray is another format which has not taken over DVD like we were told and the only time i get to author BR discs now are for weddings etc.

This!
My tv (42" 3D LED Smart) was £449 over two years ago - no different to many others in price.
The 3D Blu Ray player was £79 from Amazon - with two pairs of active specs. Hardly a wallet buster!
Most of my 3D movies have been downloaded at bugger all cost.
The tv also upscales normal tv to 3D so you can actually watch soaps, sport and anything else (even embarrassing bodies of you're really brave! ) in 3D, which can be amusing.
And I doubt films will cease to be made in 3D just because Sky shut a channel.

I've got one, but we stopped using the 3D feature ages ago. Two pairs came with the tv and it's very expensive to buy any additional ones as our ones are the glasses we have to stick the little batteries in. |

Apparently it was invented in the 60's & failed.
Reinvented in the late 70's - failed.
re-reinveted in the naughties -
.....It just will never work on a flat TV.
& no, I wasn't sacked in!"
Re-reinvented*
Sucked in*
fckn autocorrect needs reinventing too! |
