"My gaming is all tabletop"
I've started collection war hammer to paint, it fills a lot of time and keeps me occupied - we hardly see each other sometimes with work
Wouldn't know where to start with actually playing the game |

Weirdly I've gone back to Modern Warfare 2 online. It's actually way more challenging than I remember and the maps are still amazing.
Otherwise I play single player. Currently on FarCry 4 but have a long list of titles to get through. |

I play civ 4, Dawn of war 1 and 2, medieval total war and of course the command and conquer games. I have not played any for months though.
Used to collect warhammer years ago but am thinking of starting again, probably 40k. |

Yeah star wars battlefront 3 looks like a right game. The trailer for it looks so realistic and thats apparently game footage. i upgraded my pc recently to hopefully cope with that. The reason why i brought this up is cause a couple i play with in a clan im in mentioned they was on fabs and i wondered how many more on here play online |

I used to play online a lot, but had issues with the XBL servers after I moved here. Mostvof the PC servers seem to work alright, but I need to upgrade before I try and get into anything meaty. My preferences online are for things like Left 4 Dead and Battlefield, although racing games can be fun too.
I also am a big tabletop gamer as well and even here managed to drag a big stack of games with me.
Do many people use Steam online? |

Kitten and I play some games and we want to get into table top gaming too.
We have been playing Diablo recently and a little Fifa.
As for Steam. I love it, it's a great platform. Can't wait to see the steam boxes they are making. |

Steam boxes are the reason I've held off from upgrading my console so far, I'm certainly curious how it will turn out.
There are some great tabletop games out there, even here I still often manage to get pretty regular gaming nights. |

I'm not a fan of modern gaming, so am currently working on creating my own, old skool style games.
I'm not under any illusions, this is gonna be hard work and a long slog, but so is learning to play a musical instrument. If you have a passion, work at it. |

I've got a PS3, and am tempted by the four... But the top end steam boxes, if they work as good media centres too may just edge out the PS4. |

I'd just build a PC to be honest, they're pretty of overpriced and just take away the possibilities of upgrades. Not to mention you'd only have to negotiate Steam DRM and they'd essentially have a monopoly on all the games you buy. Also Steam and Valve are pretty much cancer at the moment. |

Steam Macines are (generally) expected to be expandable, but conform to a minimum build. There's a fair chance I will seld-build anyway, but want to see controller and OS in action first.
Frankly, I've never had a problem with Steam and most of my gaming friends similarly are happy with it and many of them use it more than I do. There are, of course, dissenters, but that's the nature of the beast.
I don't see how Steam 'controlling' what you play on their console differs from Sony, MS or Nintendo doing the same. The benefits of Steam as an integrated gaming platform currently outweigh the disadvantages. |

That's the issue though, you're consigning yourself to a restrictive platform. When there's an open platform right in front of you. Plus, it's cheaper. If you like the OS, you can install it to your PC. You can use a steam controller with your PC too, or an xbox, or a ps4 one. If you were to use an open platform then you could buy and play games without DRM, which would mean they're yours to keep. Copy it, give it to a friend, whatever. Steam doesn't want this.
There's a comparative service on reddit where they take the specs of the machines and build pc's with those same specs. The prices are pretty starkly different in the end. |

Yep, note the comments about self-building. Steam Machine is a platform you can build yourself, as we've both pointed out. I have no issues with Steam's DRM as most of what I've bought has been way cheaper than what's available elsewhere. And thanks to Humble Bundle I've given away a fee keys to friends as well.
If it's a good platform, then I'll probably opt for it, especially if the Linux build gives the usual advantages I get from running it over Windows.
I take your points on board and believe me, I do think things through from all angles before committing to a purchase |

Why not just build a cheaper PC, plug it into your telly, grab an xone controller (or even the steam one in the unlikely event it turns out better)and use steams big picture mode as a media centre and for your gaming? |

I've been playing a lot of older games I never got the chance to play.
Not bothering with a One or PS4.
No point since there's no decent games and the HD remaster trend is dull. |

My boy is studying gaming development in Dundee and will be having his very first game available on Steam
If enough people play and highly rate then Steam will pay and make it available to buy. He will be well on his way if that happens. I'm hoping he gets a job at Rockstar, he wants to start his own gaming company lol |
