"Do you prefer the coffee chains or the independent shops?
We prefer the variety you get in independent shops, how about you? " . The success of Costa Coffee is incredible considering the number of cafes that they have opened over the last five years . The public must like uniformly high standards . Those from independents can be very variable . The success ia also measured in the Whitbread share price which has risen fivefold in the last five years. |

It's not about uniformly high standards but more about the uncertainty of what to expect in an independent if you haven't tried them before

it entirely depends on the coffee. Some independents serve up such awful stuff that I feel I've wasted my money but one or two are excellent, there's one in Eastbourne that makes really rich, nutty coffee and we go there when we're in town. The cake is good too and only one slice needed between two |

"Love the coffee in Pret."
Have you seen the news articles about getting free coffee in Pret ?
I have my favourite independent shops where I can choose the coffee blend, and it's cheaper too |

All depends if I just want a coffee, or if I'm going for a coffee.
Having people arse about when it just needs to be poured and served is a pain. For that reason, if I'm grabbing a coffee I go for Starbucks filter.
If I'm going for a coffee, I want somewhere nice to sit and chat, so the extra waiting time is fine. So prefer smaller places. |

There was only one decent independent coffee shop near us and it's gone. There are a few other shops but they're pretentious, overpriced, and the coffee is crap.
My addiction is Costa coffee's cinnamon latté, so I'll stick with them.
