Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
"Happy St George's Day and Shakespeare's birthday too.
Ooh, I've not seen Othello for a while, I may watch it this evening. "
Enjoy. I'm in the mood for a comedy like Taming the Shrew. |

He also gave us much of our modern vocabulary.

I've studied the bard in the past and I still don't have a scooby!
Have a nice modern copy of his complete works and also a version from over 100 years ago that I had restored.
As for St George, wasn't he Greek? |

Palestinian I thought, though the story is a christianisation of the story of Perseus and Andromeda.
I also was led to believe English trading ships adopted the flag of Genoa in order to secure protection in the med before we had our own navy.
Still, do we have a rose avatar, or will I get away with a red poppy?
Happy St. George's Day everyone, let's reclaim it for us all!

I'd like to see more modern adaptations of Shakespeare's plays. R&J with DiCaprio transformed my 15yo son's understanding of the play and helped him to knuckle down and learn it for his GCSE |

"Happy St George's Day and Shakespeare's birthday too.
Why isn't St George's day celebrated here like St Patrick's day is? "
The Irish will use any excuse for a piss up right!! |

Cos he's really a foreigner who would struggle to get the right to remain now? Cos the stiff upper lip makes it difficult to enjoy the day?

"Whilst it's not Shakespeare so such, it's inspired by him...
One of my favourite films is Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. "
Saw that performed in Oxford years ago, really enjoyed it.
I think As You Like It is one of my favourites. Stratford upon Avon doesn't take too long to get to, still a lovely place to visit. |

We've got a teenager who is interested because the words aren't used as much now. He's just discovered whence.

We like that Shakespeare invented/first used so many words, even that forum standby "bump".

Over the rainbow, under the bridge |
"Happy St George's Day and Shakespeare's birthday too.

Going to be pedantic now and say it's not strictly Shakespeare's birthday. This is the date he was baptised - usually done around 3days after birth. Births weren't registered then as they are now. He did die on this date though. |

He also created the name Jessica in Merchant of Venice. |

I can still recite the soliloquy from Hamlet. Funny what sticks in your head. I did once perform in As You Like It too. Thank god the video footage is long forgotten.

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature's changing course, untrimm'd;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st;
Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st;
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. |

Now here's a question:
How many common English phrases or even clichés can you think of that were written by Shakespeare?
* Making the beast with two backs
* All's well that ends well
* Pound of flesh
... |

"My own favourite - more sinned against than sinning. I must do some more sinning.
I've got enough sin to go around if you need some "
I know that's a wild goose chase (Romeo and Juliet).

"For anyone who feels the need for a Shakespeare fix today on BBC2 tonight is Shakespeare Live hosted by David Tennent. Starts at 8.30 should be good I think."
Radio 3 has music inspired by Shakespeare today too. |

"Ermmm... Has anyone heard from Onny? Last thing I remember him saying was he was going into hospital.
No, he hasn't been on since I came back. I hope it's not connected.
"
It was three months ago and he was online a month a go so hopefully it's not.
