Anyone else get fed up with the huge difference between sizes in various shops?? Yesterday I was wearing a pair of jeans from next in a size 6 (any other pair of trousers in a size 6 won't go past my knees) today im wearing a pair from new look in a 12 and they aren't exactly loose... I'm a 10 I think although its hard to tell because what's the standard size 10?

Why can't they do waist and leg measurement like men's trousers??

Men- is it easy to just pick up a pair of trousers in the waist and leg size and be confident that they will fit???

I find trousers are ok, its t shirts and shirts that differ for me, a large in one brand can be the same as a medium in another.

I have this discussion with the wife a lot. Blokes tend not to have the issue as we take stuff back and don't accept it.

Shops that sell varieing sized to ladies know most can't be bothered to kick up a fuss so they don't bother (my opinion anyway)

I shop for clothes in minutes walk in read sizes buy and walk out (although not tkmax there shirts are for teenage boys and a large doesnt fit on my arm)

My wardrobes contain a huge range of huge sizes. I've taken to looking at the item and then making a judgement on whether it will fit or not and deciding that I shouldn't bother.

So the manufacturers can't even use a tape measure?? I can understand them making up a size 8,10,12 as you go along but surely 34 inches is 34 inches..

Maybe they use the same measuring equipment as the 10" cock guys on here

I don't ever buy anything without trying it on first. I daren't! So the returning thing isn't an issue for me. The only thing I'll order online is shoes.

It's been the total opppsite for me. Tried to get jeans in a 10. They swamped me, got an 8 instead. Wore them twice and realised they were huge as well. Managed to sell them to a friend and got them in a 6. It's hilarious. Saw some 6's in new look yesterday and pretty sure I wouldn't of got an arm in let alone a leg!

Tried on three 32" jeans at the weekend, all different sizes! Two of them were at least 34" - I think some do it to make people feel better & more likely to buy.

Now that I'm inclined to agree with because I ordered my son some xmas pajamas from Hong Kong and I was warned in advance go check the sizing chart. He's not a big kid he wears 3/4 in most clothes and he's just turned 4. But this was when he was 18 months old and according to the sizing charts and his measurements I had to by age 4-5 and they only just fit!!!

the skirt sizes are all over the place what is classed as a 12 can be a 10 or 12 or 14 between each shops you go into to buy from

tops are the same there all over the sodding place a size 16 top i had to choose from a 14 stretchy sometimes or go up to the size 18

with daughter im dealing with a size 10 and 12

oh and i enjoy looking for stuff that the lady might like to wear

It's vanity sizing. And different shops will have customers that respond to vanity sizing in different ways.

Also different markets mean different shapes. I am a 'GAP' shaped woman. I have a fat arse and big thighs, while still being a size 8. I am not a 'Miss Sixty' size woman, which is all about having skinny, long legs and a small bum.

Shops cater to their customers. Perhaps you are not the target customer of the shops you like?

Vanity sizing - like that term

We get most our stuff from the same label, at least then we know it fits. Do the same with shoes too.

34 inches inseam or leg though can be quite a difference lol.

What annoys me though is that pants seem to be made more and more for scrawny legs.

I have to go up a few sizes in the waist to get a Jean that fits over my thighs without being tight.

This is generally why I don't wear jeans anymore and stick to cargo/combats

I remember reading a while ago that as well as vanity sizing the women's shops use concave house of mirrors mirrors to make the customers look slimmer/taller.

I think it has something to do with the materials used and also that women of the same size can vary so much in shape. For instance you could be a slim size 8 and have big boobs so that a size 8 dress would fit you everywhere else but not stretch over the bust.

Sizing does seem to differ between shops and brands also. I have clothes ranging from a 12 to a size 16 depending on style.

This. Also bear in mind a size 12 today is not the same as a size 12 from 30 years ago. They are adjusted to suit markets and/or vanity.

I'm a 16 in a dress because of my chest but I can wear a 10 skirt. Not worried about leg length because nothing I wear is supposed to even make it to my knees

With slim fit, boot cut, relaxed fit etc. You're always on a sticky wicket no matter where you go.

I know what fits me, and where to get it from though

usually a boot cut 32 reg from Gap, Fat Face or White Stuff. As I've large thighs from running and biking I'll never get in a slim or skinny leg fit

Tops are much easier, just a large will do, though have to say I prefer a tailored shirt, others just "bag"

I watched a thing recently about women's clothing and the differences from one shop to another was amazing bust waist and hip measurements differing by 12-18 inches one even 21 inches all dresses were a size 12

I agree though about guys tshirts I've tried large one and it's been like a 12yr olds top yet another place (granted rarely) i fit a medium

I think it's because a lot of women's clothes contain elastin, so you can get away with wearing different sizes depending on the fit you would like.

I've recently bought a jersey dress in an 8. I am no way a size 8. Unfortunately lol.

You should try been a TV , we have 2 wardrobes to buy for!!!!! So I fully understand all sides of this conversation, sometimes I can get in a 14 skirt others its 16, sometimes it's a 16 top and others 18, and when it comes to buying dresses it's a nightmare as anything between 14-18-20 sometimes depending on brand and whether it's got elastic woven in it

Might just be me but I find the more expensive brands have tighter fits.

Few years ago I was in topman and bought a jumper that was supposed to be XL as I wanted a loose fit, I was an L in T-shirts with a good fit and that top was tight on me.

Their 38w jeans were closer to under 36 too.

Yep and she's a size 2 and a half in shoes which was good when we were younger and we used to wear trainers all the time but finding adult shoes that small she just buys a 3 and puts cotton balls in the front or if it's an open toe her toes slip down and hang out the front!

Why can't they do waist and leg measurement like men's trousers??

Men- is it easy to just pick up a pair of trousers in the waist and leg size and be confident that they will fit??? "

I've recently emailed lots of high street stores on this subject! Drives me nuts , there's no where here I can buy jeans off the peg! They're all too bloody short!

"You can get them on line" they say . . I don't wanna order on line,I wanna try them on and buy them now!

Her (rattled)

I'm the same! I've got clothes in my wardrobe from a size 8 to a size 12. I could never order clothes online as I couldn't be confident that they'd fit - and Cba with the hassle of constantly returning things! However with lingerie I have no problems - I'm always a 34c - so why can't manufacturers do the same with clothes?

Manchester Area

Went to that designer place down town Matty Allan for a suit, eended up having to get a 48" chest and a 38" waist instead of the usual 44" and 34", go somewhere else and the normal sizes are just fine. regarding stuff from the far east, bought a load of polo shirts when I was out there and instead of the usual L/XL it was 2XL/3XL

I had no idea what that meant but having looked at a dictionary and then your photos I see what you mean! It's a lovely bum though!

Nah, they don't affect trouser buying.

"Also different markets mean different shapes. I am a 'GAP' shaped woman. I have a fat arse and big thighs, while still being a size 8. I am not a 'Miss Sixty' size woman, which is all about having skinny, long legs and a small bum."

In that case I might have to try GAP for trousers. I'm normally a curvy 14 and have long but large muscular legs and gave up on trying to find trousers that fit about 4 years ago.

As far as strange sizing goes I think it has to be Primark. I've come across size 18s that are too small and have a size 8 jumper that fits great

I wish... Though until recently I would have agreed. Strangely as I've spent more time at the gym and getting fit, my bust has gone from 38B 4 years ago, and is now a 34F. At smaller cup sizes no problem, but F cups seem to be really random sizes.

Depends on the manufacture and where they are made,as sizing differ in other countries,I find this a problem in male or female clothes,I normally find its easier to go up a size, skirts I find are worse,as they state the size, whether there lined or not,are sized the same.......
