Has anyone over come their phobia/s?

I want nothing more than to be able to over come mine. It's somewhat over taken my life for 16 years. More so in the first 6-8 years.

Silly me! I thought this thread was about a fear of heavy creamers.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I saw This Morning this week with the Speakmans. I may be developing a phobia of them. However, they showed their method and I see that retraining your thinking makes sense.

I overcame my phobia of mushrooms slowly, to the point that I ate some last month. I won't be rushing to eat them again but I know they didn't kill me.

Work out where your phobia came from, get back to there and start again.

It came from when I was pregnant. I was sick twice in one evening (from eating too much, or something that didn't agree) it's effected me really badly ever since.

Is it a fear of vomiting (very common), the food that made you feel sick or getting pregnant again in case you are sick?

The fear of vomiting yes, also seeing it, hearing.

Yes I never had another child for that reason.

I didn't eat any of the foods o hate that day for years. I feared the time of day it happened, I wouldn't watch the TV programme that was on and still won't. I got extremely thin after I had my son, I looked awful because I didn't eat.

Have you ever been sick again? Vomiting is horrible and most of us recoil at the sound and smell of it. Plus it hurts to do.

The Speakmans are a couple who de-sensitise people to their phobias. They have a slot on This Morning.

One of my friends at university had emetophobia, not just in relation to being sick herself, but seeing or hearing anyone else be sick as well. She's managed to overcome it but it took years and years; she's just had a baby and I couldn't have imagined her being able to cope pregnancy or a baby with that a few years ago. I'm not sure what type, but she had some form of counselling/therapy once it got to the point that it was really taking over her life; but to be honest it was wrapped up in bigger anxiety-type issues.

There not on it everyday, maybe once a week.

They have helped people a huge range of fear and the people have over come them fully.

My therapy/counciling didnt help for me. Maybe its the therapist but mine was adament something happened in my childhood and thats were mine has come from. But it wasnt and she couldnt let that drop.

The fact that you haven't been sick again should reassure you, not make you anxious. Perhaps look at the anxiety?

There are lots of self-help groups but maybe discuss it with your GP too and see if there is something you can access locally?

I think the Speakmans are on regularly but I don't know how often. They have a web-site - just their name minus the s and the dot tv ending.

You have to change the way you think.

Mine was spiders, until i realised they run away and hide when they see you and are scared of you, and you're bigger than them and can squish them if you wanted to, but you don't need to squish them or freak out because they don't do anything but run away or live in your house unnoticed, and they have a right to live. I live with spiders, don't throw them out and let them come and go as they please, and don't even flinch at them.

Suppose you have to look at why vomiting makes you feel the way you do and then rationalise why there's nothing to be scared of? It's just your body getting rid of something that it thinks is going to poison it. When your body evacuates the stomach it is for a reason that benefits your health.

Really. The only thing I can think of from my childhood was either being sick or dreamt of being sick all the way down the stairs then filling up 3 saucepans

I don't mean to sound rude or insensitive. But, i just don't get phobias.

How do they develop? And how can it cause someone so much fear?

Especially, items like buttons, baked beans and even clowns. It's something i can't get my head around. I always think it's mind over matter when it comes to all this.

Yeah everything is in your head, but we have an imagination and that leaves us open to thinking all sorts of possibilities from a scenario. The more you focus on a negative feeling from something then the more easily it comes to you over time.

Say you hear a rustling in the bushes. You'll be alerted that something is there but you can't see it what it is, and you probably are not scared of the bushes usually. If it's windy then you might presume there is nothing in the bush and the wind rustled it. If it's not windy then you'll presume something is in the bush but probably aren't scared of it as it didn't come out to do anything. If you'd heard on the radio earlier that a man eating tiger escaped out of the zoo then you might now be scared of the bush. It makes no sense to be scared of a bush though?

Forgot used to hate buttons as well, they used to make me feel sick for some reason, i reckon i probably choked on one when little or something and that's why i felt that way. And yeah clowns are weird and creepy tbh now i think about it, arg stop messing with my head lol...

"I don't mean to sound rude or insensitive. But, i just don't get phobias.

How do they develop? And how can it cause someone so much fear?

Especially, items like buttons, baked beans and even clowns. It's something i can't get my head around. I always think it's mind over matter when it comes to all this.

Pops has gone? "

He had been thinking about it for sometime.

"Has anyone over come their phobia/s?

I want nothing more than to be able to over come mine. It's somewhat over taken my life for 16 years. More so in the first 6-8 years. "

Lots of good info on the thread. I had a bad phobia years ago and read up on phobia treatments. I very gradually managed to de-sensitise myself and now am pretty much free of it.

It's definitely worth getting help for it. The freedom is great. x

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

"

Iv spoke to my doctor he referred me to speak to someone about it. Also occupational health have offered to talk to me too.

Go with both and see what they say. It's a start.

I will do.

Glad you made a step with your phobia "

The mushroom and I are never going to be friends but I did the de-sensitising over a long period of time before eating some.

Your thread raised some memories for me. I used to be afraid of vomiting too when I was younger. It was after being projectile sick over my bed when I was seven. I had a pregnancy where I had all day sickness for 13 weeks. I got over the phobia by being exposed to the thing I was scared of as I had no choice. I haven't felt a fear of vomiting for over 25 years but I still don't welcome it and have the normal recoil at the sound etc.

Thanks. I can't see a way out yet, not even close. I hope to one day though.

Happy for you that you over come yours x

I have a phobia that I cannot remember a time when I didn't have it. It controls my life to a certain degree, despite my trying very hard not to let it. It is worse when I'm stressed. I have tried hypnosis without success and I think, no proof though, that it is down to something that happened to me as a child

I won't discuss it, very few people know about it and I phoned a Helpline after one of those TV shows, and when I told them what it was, the person at the other end laughed down the phone at me. I never tried again. Phobias can cripple people in so many ways. You know it's not rational, but you cannot do anything about it.

I agree, I can only think that it was staffed with untrained volunteers. I hung up immediately and thought even more than I normally did, how weird was I. Since then, thanks to the internet, I now know that it isn't as strange and unusual phobia. Just not as common as spiders or snakes, both of whom I have no problem handling!

People are afraid of everything from ants to buttons to zebras. Just because it isn't a common phobia doesn't mean it isn't real for you.

"Some NLP practitioners have a fantastic record in curing phobias"

I thought that was what the Speakmans were doing on This Morning when they showed their process. Nominative determinism?
