Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Do any of you regularly meditate?

What sort? Benefits? Drawbacks? Couldn't get on with it?

I wouldn't call it meditating.

But I regularly zone out in the bath with the ipod on and the light off.

Very stress relieving!

I have been considering whether I should look at one with movement.

Thanks.

I can't do baths. I seem to remember your posts always used to come at bath time.

I do but we don't meditate where I do it. We do laugh a lot though. It's also about to end and I need to find what I will do next.

I have my own version that I find very relaxing. I came to it after trying a variety of methods. I had to learn about kundalini meditation after a spontaneous awakening.

The way of the snake... It's my Chinese birth year so maybe I should explore it.

I tried it at Uni, but couldn't get on with it. My brain kept drifting off on tangents, such as would elephants make good window cleaners.

That's the very reason I need to explore it.

I think you'd need two elephants. One has to hold the ladder.

The whole point is, with an elephant you don't need a ladder, it's reach and wash.

I have seen meditation classes local to me all to do with Buddism which I was tempted with. Maybe I should stop being a ditherer and just dive in and try it

I meditate. I use mindfulness meditation.

Recommend it highly.

Can be done sitting quietly or during activity. Its about being in the moment.

And if its done sitting quietly and youre thoughts keep invading, you accept them and bring your attention back to 'stillness'

This is kind of the point of it. Reminding yourself, you are not your thoughts. You exist above your thoughts. Your thoughts come and go. You are training your mind not to be pulled into your brain's flighty, temporary fancies.

I'm an atheist and enjoy yoga, yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises

I would suggest if one practices both yoga and controlling ones breath the meditation part falls into place xx

Just where I need to be.

I started meditation about 18 months ago. Very hard at the beginning. I wanted to calm the inner me and quieten my mind. Still rears its ugly head when I get stressed. To actually sit and clear your mind is very hard, but it does come. There are plenty of tips out there for beginners. Just do the best you can every day, and then let it go!

At moment I am back to twice a day, early morning and evening as I am supporting a family member in crisis and I could recognise in myself that I needed to relax and let the stress out.

Meditation would annoy the shit out of me within 5 minutes.

Brighton - even Hove!

I don't mediate but I can reach an intense form of altered consciousness.

Not easy saying that without sounding like a pretentious knob, but there ya goes.

Have you tried it with a candle. Stare into the candle light, it helps the focus.

It will focus your pain receptors if you lean in too close.

Try humming. Chanting takes concentration when you are not used to it.

With a candle, do you look at the light and try to de-focus? Its how I started

yes tend to do that more than chant as it does seem less intrusive, don't look at the actual light no..

usually concentrating on my breathing works well..

I tried that once before but it didn't work for me. I am in a different mental and spiritual place now though so meditation might work this time.

I nodded off during the lecture on living fearlessly and using meditation!

During the practice meditation my wild elephant mind jumped to Christmas crackers and then to cheese. I may need to work a bit harder at clearing my mind.
