Ive got rusting on my central silencer and rear silencer on my VW golf so will have to get them replaced. The garage i took it to to get it looked at seems to think i may need to get the whole exhaust replaced as there is some rusting further up near the front pipe bracket. I dont really want to do that, so any alternatives to keep the cost down?. |

even if an exhaust has a hole in you can fix with exhaust putty , and it will still pass the MOT"
The central and rear silencers both have holes in them so i know they will have to be replaced, as they are making a noise when i drive. I just dont want to have to replace the whole exhaust, so could i maybe get someone to do some welding on the front pipe bracket to save me replacing the whole exhaust?. |

Depends upon how long your thinking of keeping it. If less than 12 months then possibly get 2nd hand parts. More than a year splash out as you will get value out of it. |

I used work in making exhausts. If its just the bracket on the front pipe and not the pipe itself I'd leave it. Its bolted to the engine so can't go anywhere. Wouldn't surprise me if some aftermarket front pipes don't even have the bracket on |

If you are needing to replace 2 silencers, by the time you separate those from the rest of the system, the remaining bits have a chance to fall apart in any case.
Replace the lot and be done with it. Bodging is false economy - you'll only have to go back in a few months and do it all over again. |

i say leave it...i deal in them every day even if we have to do a rear section and a front pipe we'll seperate the middle/cat to join that onto the new prts and 9 times out of 10 its fine |
