I thought the thread title read "Why do they do them Mars Bars" and thought this was a Marianne Faithful type thread.
Well, the answer is we already have a Galaxy, a Milky Way, a Curly Wurly ... and Mars was feeling a bit left out and in the interests of not wanting any celestial entity to develop a inferiority complex we had to have a Mars bar too.
I prefer Crunchies myself, the chocolate melts quickly and Siren says it ting... um... oops. |

n 1932, Forrest Mars, son of American candy maker Frank C. Mars, rented a factory in Slough and with a staff of twelve people began manufacturing a chocolate bar consisting of nougat and caramel covered in milk chocolate, modelled after his father's Milky Way bar, which was already popular in the US. Today the basic recipe is unaltered but the size of the bar and the proportions of the main components have changed over the years.

It is not true that Mars bars are the same as ever, i'm sure they changed a few years back. Thicker consistency IIRC.
The other product Frank Mars made in the early days ( still do ) was pet food and he insisted on tasting every new product to see if it was satisfactory.

They are defiantly different these days. I don't think they are as sickly and they don't get as hard in the fridge these days. |

Are all choccie bars named after their creator?
Until this thread I hadn't realised that there was a Mr. Mars that had invented the bar. Consequently after some research I have found other similarly named creators of confectionery here...
Derek Twix - invented the Twix
Alfonse Marathon who later changed his name bye deed pole to Jerry Snicker.
and Kevin Topic who invented the smartie.*
.

.
.
*nothing in this post is in the strictest sense true. |
