Brilliant spin bowler.
Excellent commentator.
And he was the one who thought up the idea of having the score in the top corner of your telly screen that is used in football now.
A cricketing legend. |

All round brilliance polite, but when it needed to be said, he said it.
Like when his own country bowled an underarm delivery to prevent New Zealand hitting a 6 to tie the match.
Here it is with sub titles for what he really wanted to say.

"and he's bowled him!" I grew up listening to John Arlott and Ritchie Benaud's cricket commentaries. Long hot summer days listening to the radio and playing cricket were the staple of my early teenage years summer holidays during the mid 70s. We all used to try to imitate his Aussie accent as we did our own commentary for our games. A sad loss. RIP |

He was one of the greats that I admired in my youth.
He made even the most boring test match interesting with his infectious love of the game and voice that will forever be in my mind when I watch a game of cricket.
A true gentleman.
RIP and G'day Richie

damn... missed this last night...
he was the soundtrack to a lot of summers for me.... loved his style and his rye sense of humour
one of the best things he said was about commentary in question "if you have something to say and it add to the picture.. say it... if not, shut up!!!"
he always treated the viewer like adults... |

Sad news when waking up this morning
Liking the tributes though and it shows a dignified man who didn't need more words than necessary and didn't resent the game progressing which some commentators seem to do. He'll be up there in the comm' box with Sid Waddell! |
