Woodthorpe

Looking at having a road trip up north around North Yorkshire / Northumberland and looking for any ideas of nice, scenic, relaxing places to visit. It's an area we've not explored before so all info gratefully received

Thanks

Holy island is a must to visit, you can only get to it over a causeway at low time, bit like going back in time, then down the coast a bit is bam borough castle, right on the sea edge,if you take the tour they will tell you about the ghost, then further down is sea houses, take a boat trip out to the isles, lovely area.........

If you like the thought of Alnwick head out to Rothbury take a look at Cragside then take back road over moors into top end of Alnwick it is a scenic drive, like people say the Coastal route up the coast takes in a lot of sites... Don't forget Hadrian's Wall is out west tooo... lots to see and do in Northumberlad..enjoy

If you're heading towards the Lake District, hire a boat and go rowing on Derwent Water. 4 of us did in 1984 and it still sticks in ma mind as if it was yesterday

Durham Tees

If you were spending a few days I would head north from you to Leeming, then head west and drive round Wensleydale and Swaledale. There are lovely villages all round Leyburn, then head to Hawes, Tan Hill, Muker, Reeth and to Richmond. I would then head up Teesdale, past Barnard Castle, then there are several nice ways you can work your way up to the A69 in Northumberland by Haydon Bridge or Hexham. Once there head up the A68 and work your way round to the places mentioned earlier, like Rothbury and Alnwick. If you've got time you might want to keep going and head up to Holy Island. Then I would do the exact route in reverse to see the same countryside from a different perspective. It's worth it.

Bon voyage!
