Herts

Decking looks better but patios are easier to maintain and are more permanent (in my opinion, anyway)...

here

Use the decking that is made from solid textured plastic. Looks great and doesn't need maintenance.

Patio. They're handy if you need to get rid of the body

We had the same dilema and opted for Indian Sandstone patio - looks great and cleans up well. Was put off decking as in our last house we had that and we had a resident rat underneath - was then told they love dark damp areas with food - arghhh would never have decking again - also I slipped over a couple of times on it so I think patio is safer.

decking attracts rats and mice ...i would steer well clear of it as they will likely move into your home as well

bradford

ive installed both but for myself I used 3' x 2' flags as the dont move much compared to the smaller ones

decking has to be done each year to preserve its wood looks nice though

to finish off the flagging I used steel posts and metal railings and some metal square wire to stop dog escaping

infront of that is a 12" planting area looks loverly with the white and blue Canterbury bells and Antirrhinums

the display of all the colours is loverly against the fencing

Can't beat a smart well put together deck. I'd use the new composite deck boards though, I'm forever having to stain my wood deck

There isn’t a definitive answer as to which is better because it depends on your location, tastes and needs.

There's the dilemma. I love rats and think they are really cute. But I have bodies to hide. Decisions, decisions...

Patio def I've got old decking and it's a nightmare now although after some of the quotes I've been getting for paving the decking appears the cheaper option.

Decking is deadly when it develops a layer of slime in winter.(Algae!)

I've gone arse over tit putting the bin out loads of times!

Funny, I've had deck 6 years, spent on quality deck boards, not the cheap B & Q shit ( go to a builders merchant instead) treat it end summer and mid spring and it's still good as new. Never had a rat either, hedgehogs on the other hand

Put the bodies under the decking...the rats will do the rest

I'll remember that ... I think I bought B&Qs budget balsa wood... Papier mâché would have lasted longer.

Decking is better for the environment as is doesnt prevent water soaking away and provided it is jet washed and treated correctly it wont become slippery. It is also a sustainable material unlike concrete slabs that create pollution during manufacture and can look butt ugly. Give me real wood any day and not just for the decking.lol
