Conservatives refuse to rule out tax cuts

Excellent news. Unlike Ed Balls, I celebrate the fact that a future Conservative government may well cut taxes further and thereby put more cash in peoples pockets.
As of today the personal tax free allowance is £10,600. Ten years ago under the previous Labour government the tax free allowance was less than half that amount at £4750.
It is about time we celebrated tax cuts and not regard them as something to be afraid of. |

its like someone has been reading the conservative central HQ election bullet points for the day.....
if they are going to continue with austarity the last think people should see are tax cuts for his mates while us at the bottom working in aid of the public have had below inflation pay rises or no rises at all for the last 5 years...
so much for all being in it together.... |

Lets also not forget that as soon as the Lib-Con were established (obviously not elected), they immediately cut the upper tax level to thank their rich friends.
Historically, the Tories have always offered tax cuts as an incentive to try and win votes.... often, these tax cuts have been paid for by selling the family silver to some friend or other for peanuts.

Actually I am sat on the sofa doing some work with Sky News on in the background and just seen Ed balls horrified face at the fact that George Osborne has refused to rule out tax rises.
Why on earth would anyone be against tax cuts when the alternative would be to give more of your money to Ed Balls? |

Also, lets not forget that whilst the government have been refusing even sub-cost of living pay rises to the public sector workforce, they've repeatedly increased their own remuneration by big chunks.

2009/2010 wasn't ten years ago. Though thanks for pointing out that another £4,000 has been added to the tax free allowance in the last 5 years.
Actually, I am not a spin doctor - i am a frustrated conservative trapped in a traditional Labour safe seat constituency. I think mine was the only Conservative vote registered last time round....
They would vote for a donkey round these parts... As long as it was a Labour donkey. |

Just seen Cameron now and he has said...
1) Conservatives will raise tax free allowance to £12,500
2) Raise 40% tax threshold to £50,000
Both of these are good ideas and will benefit a cross section of society. |

Well move then to a city that hasn't had the spending on infrastructure and amenities that Manchester has had......why not move to a more afluent area where you can live in comfort and forget the poverty due to austerity |

How do you expect to fund public services such as the NHS, schools and such like which are subject to inflation, if you keep cutting the base revenue stream which supports them.
Cutting taxation is just killing public services. |

you wanted to give the conservatives credit for raising it up to 10600, that wasn't a 2010 conservative manifesto pledge, it was a 2010 Lib Dem manifesto pledge...... and in was the Lib Dems that had it written into the 2010 coalition agreement.....
so again.... would you like to give Clegg and the Lib Dems credit for that?
and as for the 12,500 pledge by the end of the next 5 year parliament, ukip have pledged to raise it 12500, the Lib Dems have pledged to raise it to 12500, the greens have pledged to raise up to... guess what figure.... 12500 |

Not necessarily true. Cutting taxes generally increases the amount of tax that is actually collected. Despite the "tax cuts for millionaires" soundbytes that Labour continuously roll out, more tax was collected in the last five years than the previous five under labours stewardship - see last weeks thread for source.
I dont understand why we continuously accept the levels of tax that we pay, it is far too much. |

VAT is the third largest tax income in the UK.
Raised by the Tories at every opportunity.
While they cut income tax a small percentage,they actually double their income by increasing VAT that effects everyone and those with least the most.
Wonder what plans Compo has for the VAT rate should he win again.

. Nice post though we could do with even further tax cuts if we want a more equal society. The allowance at which higher rate tax is paid needs to be raised substantially. In addition the inheritance tax allowance should be raised to £2 million and the annual capital gains allowance to £ 50,000 with the facility to roll it forward if unused . |

. Spending more money does not necessary equate to better public services . Surely the key measure is how efficiently thre money is spent , not the actual amount . |

It is a strange idea from Cameron as it's been clear for the last five years that the only reason the threshold has been raised in this period has been due to the Lib Dem influence
I hope this is all academic: I remain unconvinced that the Tories' policies are working well. Certainly there is little evidence in my neck of the woods |

Since going through my training and qualifying the raising of the tax free allowance has been great for me.
I would like to see a government pick a level of income that's considered "liveavble" and set the tax free bracket to that level.
It benefits everyone so fair but especially the low earners |

Why should be tax payer help those who decide to have a large family regardless of the cost ?. One gentleman in South Wales has recently boasted of having forty children many of whom were taken into care . All of this was of course funded by the tax payer . Some people have no sense of shame .

Just scrap indirect taxes except ones(tobacco duty for instance) that are designed for a purpose and have one flat rate tax level for all!.
With a fine levy equal to any tax evasion. Ie you dodge 20 of tax the fine is repayment plus 20 quid. You dodge a hundred million the fine is repayment plus a hundred million quid!.
The tax system needs a massive simplifying overhaul.

One other point that is on the horizon and that is the pension changes due on Thursday. This current government is banking on a lot of 55 year olds and above going on a consumer spending fest thereby raking in taxes. Simple policy but one that will give a boost to the borrowing section of the economy as people buy consumer goods and pay debt down. |

I strongly support a non of the above option on the ballet with the caveat that anyone who ran where a none of the above vote won is not allowed to run again that election.
Would a low people to physically remove dodgy politicians from the running and encourage votes from the disenfranchised and give a certain measure of accountability to the system. |
